Many Gen Zers purchase cheap goods from the Chinese e-commerce companies Shein and Temu. The Biden administration is taking steps to make more Chinese imports subject to import fees. AdvertisementTwo of Gen Z's favorite shopping platforms for cheap goods could get more expensive in the near future. The trade provision, called "de minimis," allows US consumers to avoid paying these import fees on direct-to-consumer shipments of less than $800. However, import fees could vary by product.

The dockworkers' strike threatens supply chains, while Hurricane Helene caused costly damage. Devastation from Hurricane Helene, a dockworkers' strike, and escalating conflict in the Middle East all threaten to scramble supply chains and inflate prices. How much the strike impacts prices depends on how much of a cushion companies have built to deal with any bottlenecks. Bottlenecks also encourage carriers to raise their prices, increasing retail and consumer goods prices, Kent said. The hurricane has also disrupted some supply chains, including healthcare supplies and high-purity quartz needed for semiconductor manufacturing.

White House officials on Friday met with representatives from the consortium, the US Maritime Corporation, to encourage the association to stay at the negotiating table. President Joe Biden has sent a clear message that he has no plans to do the latter. Without taking that move, there’s not much else the White House can do. “The administration is using its bully pulpit, and has been for a while,” says John Porcari, who served as the White House supply chain czar under Biden. “In political terms, there’s no good time for a strike,” the former official said.

Hong Kong CNN —Beijing says it’s investigating fashion retailer PVH Corp, the owner of Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, for refusing to source cotton from the Xinjiang region, in a move that could lead to sanctions on an American company with major business interests in China. The ministry said in a statement that New York-based PVH (PVH) is suspected of “violating normal market transaction principles” by boycotting cotton sourced from China’s far western region of Xinjiang. Being banned by China would deal a big blow to PVH, which, like other global fashion firms, sources extensively in the country. Western apparel brands have faced pressure in China over their position on Xinjiang cotton before. In March 2021, Swedish multinational H&M was pulled from major e-commerce stores in China and blocked by several major navigation, review and rating apps.

Patrick T. Fallon | AFP | Getty ImagesNew data shows a surge in trade between China and Mexico at a time of tough tariff talk during the presidential campaign. This nearshoring of manufacturing enables companies to change a product's origin of goods, also referred to as the "economic nationality" of a product. Data from freight analytics firm Xeneta shows China to Mexico container trade up by 26.2% from January to July 2024, after growing by 33% in 2023. Mexico is also a member of the Pacific Alliance, a trade bloc formed by Mexico, Chile, Colombia, and Peru. But as a general rule, economists tend to agree that, for U.S. consumers, higher tariffs tend to mean higher prices. "They'll be buying things at higher prices than they otherwise would." Still, a number of organizations say that Trump's new tariff policy would have a negative tangible effect on American consumers' finances. The federal government and many state governments are passing laws and regulations designed to reduce our use of fossil fuels and increase renewable energy production. Now let's talk about energy production. Big picture, America's production of oil, natural gas, and renewables is growing with natural gas growing most of all. In 1950, natural gas was about 18% of total US energy production. As for oil, US domestic crude oil production has more than doubled since 2000.

Washington CNN —Former President Donald Trump and Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance continue to falsely describe how one of their major policy proposals, across-the-board tariffs, would work. Trump has falsely, and repeatedly, claimed that China – not US importers – pay the tariff. Facts First: Trump and Vance’s claims about how tariffs work are false. Together, the price increases cost consumers more than $1.5 billion during the first year the tariffs were in place. It’s true that after Trump imposed tariffs on foreign-made steel, some American steel companies reopened mills and created new jobs.

And we will stop the fentanyl,” Trump said during a recent campaign appearance in Michigan. But fentanyl activists say Trump is at least drawing attention to the issue, whereas the Biden administration, they say, is not. By 2017, the year Trump took office, there were 28,000 deaths from fentanyl. In 2021, during Biden’s first year of office — when many Americans were still stuck at home amid the pandemic — fentanyl deaths rose by 23% to more than 70,000. Trump repeatedly blames the increase in fentanyl deaths on the influx of 10 million migrants who crossed the border during the Biden.

Lobster fishing is a game of inches, and the number of inches is about to change. Fishing regulators are instituting a new rule that lobster fishermen must abide by stricter minimum sizes for crustaceans they harvest. The changes do not apply in Canada, which has an even larger lobster fishing industry than the U.S. Some scientists who study the fishery have supported the minimum size change. But the lobster industry sees a different story, said Patrice McCarron, executive director of the Maine Lobstermen’s Association, the oldest and largest fishing industry association on the East Coast.
