Spain's startup scene has evaded some of the collapse in VC funding that has rocked Europe in 2023. Smaller check sizes and a lack of "ego" has somewhat protected the ecosystem, investors say. Smaller valuations, check sizes, and a distinct lack of ego helped Spain's startup scene evade some of the shocking collapse in venture capital funding that has rocked Europe so far this year. Smaller rounds give Spain's startups an edge in the downturnWhat correction was felt was eased by the fact there is less "ego" in Spain's ecosystem, according to Max Bray, an investor at early-stage firm K Fund. As well as the birth of local growth funds, investors see corporations playing a role in closing the funding gap.

So-called ESG investing is a big deal. In other words, 1 in every 8 U.S. investor dollars is in a sustainable fund. The growing prominence of and demand for ESG investments has attracted the attention of politicians and regulators. ESG has become a catch-all acronym for what asset management industry pros would call sustainable investing — strategies that seek to deliver a financial return while providing for societal good. Companies will have to show they are reducing their impact on the world’s natural life, though not to a specific level, under a global plan agreed to Monday. Under the agreement—officially called the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, or GBF—governments between now and 2030 will introduce laws and policy measures requiring large companies and banks to disclose and reduce the damage done to ecosystems from their operations, supply chains and portfolios. The rules aim to take into account the connection between climate and nature, including cultivated and natural biodiversity, deforestation and water use, the ISSB said. Such measures are “critical to addressing the dangerous loss of biodiversity and restoring natural ecosystems,” COP15 organizers said. Even with the framework agreed upon by nations, assessing companies’ biodiversity impact could be a headache.
This could change after negotiators at the U.N. nature summit in Montreal secured long-awaited formal support on Monday for a Global Biodiversity Framework to protect nature. Just 907.6 million euros are invested in Morningstar’s top 10 equity funds with biodiversity in their name. "We know the global economy and every company in it is negatively impacting biodiversity," said Tom Atkinson, portfolio manager at AXA Investment Managers, which has a 117 million euro Article 9 biodiversity impact fund. "At the moment we can only assess the negative impact (on biodiversity) of the companies in our portfolio, this is why more biodiversity funds don't exist and why regulation is arguably dragging." Three of the six largest biodiversity-named funds assessed by Reuters are overweight industrials versus the MSCI ACWI Index (USD).

SummarySummary Companies Fee-related earnings beat estimatesTPG's stock rises nearly 8%NEW YORK, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Private equity firm TPG Inc (TPG.O) said on Wednesday its after-tax quarterly distributable earnings fell more than 60% due to a plunge in asset sales across its private equity, growth, real estate and impact businesses. However, TPG's fee-related earnings, a closely watched measure that captures income from management fees, was flat at $121 million. "What we're seeing is that investors don't care so much about performance fees but about fee-related earnings and its growth trajectory," said BMO Capital Markets analyst Rufus Hone. "Fee-related earnings is predictable; every dollar of fee-related earnings is worth $2 of performance fees," Hone added. During the quarter, TPG said its private equity funds appreciated by 2.3%, growth funds rose by 3.8% and impact funds were up 2.9%, though real estate funds depreciated by 0.4%.
