REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/IllustrationAug 3 (Reuters) - Airbnb (ABNB.O) forecast revenue for the current quarter above market estimates on Thursday, as the vacation rental firm is set to gain from a rebound in international travel. The San Francisco-based company forecast revenue for the third quarter between $3.3 billion and $3.4 billion, ahead of analysts' average estimate of $3.22 billion, as per Refinitiv data. Travel operators have begun to benefit from a robust rebound in international travel, aided by pandemic restrictions easing and a strong U.S. dollar that has encouraged consumers to book flights and stays overseas. Gross bookings rose 13% to $19.1 billion, in line with analysts' average estimate. Airbnb's quarterly revenue rose 18.1%, to $2.48 billion, ahead of analysts' estimate of $2.42 billion.

Paris CNN —Back in the 1980s, when I first began living in Paris, I once had to clamber onto the tiny exterior staircase that surrounds the Eiffel Tower and is used to paint or repair it. Still, at that time, nothing could have impelled me to risk a swim in that other iconic Parisian sight — the Seine River — not without a full biohazard suit. Today’s Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, has made a similar promise, and local authorities have put 1.4 billion euros ($1.55 billion) behind it. Paris has indeed made strides in cleaning up its famous river — water samples from June showed “excellent results” in complying with European regulation, according to city hall. In 1972’s “Last Tango in Paris,” Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider first meet on a Seine bridge.

A video compilation claiming to show zoo animals roaming Paris streets is made up of clips that are not recent and is unrelated to the ongoing riots in France in June and July 2023. Social media users shared a compiled video of unrelated footage showing animals roaming city streets at night, with the caption: “It is being reported that in the French riots, numerous zoo animals have been released in France” on Facebook (here) and Twitter (here). However, the videos predate riots in France over the police shooting of a teenager of Algerian and Moroccan descent on June 27 (here). The clip of a sprinting zebra shot from the dashcam of a vehicle could be traced to a tweet published on April 11, 2020 (here). There is no evidence that animals have been released from Paris zoos amid riots in the city in 2023.

A years-old video of lions strolling between cars was captured at a safari park in the English town of Prescot. It does not show animals released by protesters in Paris following the fatal police shooting of a teenager of north African descent on June 27. A tweet linking a video of lions to the protests in France has garnered at least 1,100 retweets (archive.fo/5Y12j). Knowsley Safari Park said in an email that the clip in question shows its premises. This clip has been online since at least 2020 and was recorded at Knowsley Safari Park in England.

One source for such items is Outlandish, the Crown Heights, Brooklyn, outfitter that opened in January. It was co-founded by Benje Williams and Ken Bernard, who are Black, expressly to encourage people of color to reconnect with the outdoors. The shop sells the necessary gear but also organizes hikes outside of the city and hosts a book club focused on works about nature by writers of color. He and his father, who hadn’t gone backpacking in 40 years, have been on three more trips since. For the adventurous dad, Williams recommends an ultralightweight stuff sack from Allmansright, whose backpacks and bags are handmade in the Bronx, or socks from the Brooklyn-based label William Ellery, which offers wool-blend pairs in nature-inspired colors with names like Chanterelle and Lichen.

Texas resident Vanessa Chaverri-Gratz was casually perusing real estate with her husband on a date. We didn't plan to move right away, we said, "Let's just look at real estate, because that's really fun." The house is located in Grosse Ile, Michigan, an island between Michigan and Canada. We were not going to offer over asking, and we weren't going to put ourselves in a bad situation with selling our home. We agreed that unless everything literally fell into perfect place, it wasn't going to happen — and a lot of things needed to fall into place.
In 2010, Busayo Olupona was working as a corporate finance lawyer in New York City when she began making dresses from traditional African textiles, both as a creative outlet and as a way to connect with her heritage. In 2013, she decided to turn her hobby into a business, launching Busayo, a collection of full-skirted dresses, voluminous pants and puff-sleeved tops, all produced in the country where she spent her childhood. Over the past decade, her designs have been spotted on celebrities like Lupita Nyong’o and Gwyneth Paltrow, and picked up by luxury retailers including Neiman Marcus and Moda Operandi. When she’s home in Brownsville, Brooklyn, Olupona jumps at any opportunity to host a gathering. “Nigerians love a good party,” she says, recalling childhood memories of her parents and their friends dancing to the jùjú music by Shina Peters and King Sunny Ade, dressed up in Nigerian lace and head wraps.
PARIS, March 5 (Reuters) - Industrial action in France over the government's planned pensions overhaul will cause heavy disruption to public transport again on Tuesday, the transport minister and several public transport authorities said on Sunday. Some unions, such as the hardline CGT, called for a rolling strike at refineries and at the national railway operator SNCF. "We are moving up a gear," the head of CGT, Philippe Martinez, told French weekly JDD. It is up to him to withdraw this reform," he said, referring to President Emmanuel Macron. RATP, the public transport operator for the Ile-de-France region around Paris, also said metro lines and suburban trains will be heavily disrupted, with some metro lines only running at peak hours.

"I am sad and proud at the same time", said Thomas Bregas, a young Franco-Moroccan wrapped in a Morocco flag. Morocco had a shot at becoming the first African nation to reach a World Cup final, but France are now poised to become the first team to retain their World Cup title in 60 years on Sunday. He added that Moroccans had nothing to be ashamed of after an "extraordinary" World Cup journey. In Paris, Police were gearing up for possible skirmishes, after scuffles followed last week's Moroccan quarter-final win over Portugal. Morocco fans in France had been in a celebratory frenzy ever since their team went on its historic World Cup journey, becoming the first African and Arab team to reach the last four in the global showpiece event.
Companies Shell PLC FollowPARIS, Nov 15 (Reuters) - Oil major Shell (SHEL.L) and state-owned Chinese energy company CGN on Tuesday that they would drop their plan for a floating wind power project on France's Brittany coast, citing inflation and supply chain problems among other reasons. "The project faced several technical, commercial and financial challenges, all in a context of constantly increasing costs and very strong constraints in terms of inflation and supply chain," the companies said in a joint statement. The wind farm would have been located off the coast of Belle-Ile, an island popular with tourists and co-financed by a regional public investment bank. "The economic conditions linked to the project have been significantly modified", the companies said. PARIS, Oct 19 (Reuters) - There are signs of a general improvement in the supply of petrol to service stations in France, but the situation in the Paris/Ile-de-France area remains difficult, French Energy Transition Minister Agnes Pannier-Runacher told French radio. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com RegisterThose protests have disrupted the supply of petrol to service stations, leading to long lines of motorists queuing to fill up their cars and causing general public anger. Energy company EDF (EDF.PA), which the French government is in the process of fully nationalising, has also been affected by strikes at its nuclear reactors. Paris CNN —Some 28.5% – nearly one third – of gas stations in mainland France are out of stock of at least one fuel, French Energy Transition Minister Agnes Pannier-Runacher told journalists Friday. A source from the office of the French prime minister on Friday blamed the long lines and exhausted stocks at French gas stations this week on panic buying, rather than just supply problems. This is despite gas companies providing between a 30% and 50% increase in supply of gas to pumps this week, compared to a normal week, the source said. Earlier this week, the French government ordered staff at an ExxonMobil refinery in Normandy to return to work, a highly unusual step. Meanwhile, on Friday, French energy giant TotalEnergies struck a deal with two French trade unions, CFE-CGC and the CFDT, to increase salaries for 2023.
Notably, Paris says it will not organize fan zones for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, citing social and environmental issues. “Paris Saint-Germain’s matches in the Parc des Princes have become a must-see event for a great many foreign visitors.”France is looking to retain the World Cup after winning the competition in 2018. James Williamson/Getty ImagesParis joins Strasbourg, Lille, Rodez, Bordeaux, Nancy and Reims in committing to not organizing public viewings. “I repeat that this is not the trial of Qatar, we are questioning the model of this event,” insisted Rabadan. Qatar World Cup officials estimate a very different death toll, telling CNN last year that there have been just three work-related deaths on stadiums and 35 non-work-related deaths.
