CNN —Years ago, Matthew McConaughey shared that while he and Kate Hudson were filming “Fool’s Gold” in 2008, she made a hygienic request of him. “She always brings a salt rock, which is some natural deodorant, and says, ‘Would you please put this on?,’” he reportedly said at the time. No cologne, no deodorant.”That story resurfaced recently when Hudson made an appearance on “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.”Reading from a viewer’s question, Cohen asked Hudson, “Was that old urban legend true that you forced Matthew McConaughey to wear deodorant while filming ‘Fool’s Gold?’”Hudson denied she had forced him, but confirmed McConaughey doesn’t wear deodorant“And by the way, I don’t either,” she added. “My thing was that I could smell him from a mile…because we were so close,” Hudson said. “We’re au naturales.”The pair also starred together in the hit 2003 film, “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.”

In today's big story, President Biden's comeback plan isn't working , and Democratic leaders are ready to move on . President Joe Biden's reelection campaign appears to be on its last legs as calls within his party have grown from whispers to shouts since his disastrous debate last month. AdvertisementBut perhaps the biggest blow to Biden's reelection campaign came with the news that his former running mate has doubts. But for some Democrats, the risk of Biden continuing his reelection campaign could extend from the White House to Capitol Hill. Still, despite mounting pressure, Biden's campaign has remained steadfast about his reelection bid.

Hudson River Trading winning any trade over its competitors, like Citadel Securities, Virtu, and Jane Street, comes down to its pricing engine. The list of official participants in this year’s fifth edition of Upstate Art Weekend, a sprawling festival that embraces nearly every art event or exhibition happening north of New York City over the next four days, has reached 145. It’s a dramatic rise from an informal band of some two dozen arts centers and galleries just four years ago, and it now spans 10 counties in New York State. Some events spill over from last year, but there are many new developments. At the Zero Art Fair in Elizaville, nearby, visitors are welcome to take home one available work per day for free under an innovative contract that vests ownership over five years, after which time title will pass to the new owner. The contract was developed for the artist William Powhida (who founded that fair with the artist Jennifer Dalton).

Amtrak Passengers Face Record Delays From Extreme Weather
  + stars: | 2024-07-17 | by ( Minho Kim | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Later that afternoon, after the temperature peaked at 96 degrees in Newark, Amtrak lost electricity near the New Jersey side of the Hudson River tunnels. The power failure soon shuttered a 150-mile stretch of the busiest rail corridor in the United States for more than three hours. The impact reverberated until the next day, when trains chugged through with hours of residual delays. As the planet rapidly warms, train delays and breakdowns are becoming more frequent as America’s antiquated rail infrastructure struggles to remain functional during prolonged extreme weather events that were not typical when the system was constructed. A New York Times analysis of Amtrak data found that the rail service’s passengers have faced record delays in recent years caused by inclement weather such as heat waves, storms, floods, high winds, low temperatures, tornadoes, lightning and wildfires.

The Civil War was over, and Black men were legally allowed to vote and helped Republicans win in 1870. Two years later, Louisiana Democrats were determined to take back the state by preventing Black men from voting through intimidation and voter suppression. On Easter Sunday morning, White supremacists stormed the building and went on a killing spree, brutally murdering some 150 Black men. Another disputed election, more political violenceAs for the gubernatorial election dispute in 1872, it happened again in 1876. And while violence should never be the answer, it has occurred more than any of us would want to admit.

Experts told Business Insider the Ukraine war has underscored how some elements of modern air combat are radically changing. And in fights like Desert Storm and the Iraq War, the West established air superiority by taking out its opponent's air defenses. The Russian air force can't meet Western air forces air to air in a major attack without being "shot to pieces," Bronk said. To rate each state's infrastructure, we look at roads, bridges, ports and airports. New in 2024, we evaluate so-called site readiness programs set up in many states to link companies with shovel-ready sites. The Economic Development Partnership of Alabama offers one of the more robust site readiness programs in the nation. Roads, bridges, and broadband are also in excellent shape in Tennessee. A respectable 24% of the state's power comes from renewable energy, putting it in the top half of states.

A plan to build a casino over a sprawling rail yard on Manhattan’s Far West Side has a new, formidable opponent: parkgoers. Friends of the High Line, an influential nonprofit that operates the nearby 1.5-mile rail-line-turned-park, said Wednesday that it will muster supporters to attempt to thwart the development plan. The opponents of the casino proposal said the development would block views of the city from the High Line and create gusty winds and cast long shadows that could hurt local businesses. The proposal, submitted in February, would also create a 1,180-foot apartment tower, a 1,376-foot office building, a public school and day care. The development, in Hudson Yards, is being led by Related Companies, which built the eastern half of the site, and Wynn Resorts, a Las Vegas gambling giant.

However, only 53% of Japanese said they feel "vacation deprived" compared to 65% of Americans, it showed. Expedia's report indicates that feeling "vacation deprived" has less to do with the actual time off one takes, and more to do with cultural mores around work and free time. Wasted vacation daysDespite most workers indicating they feel vacation deprived, respondents from nearly every location admitted to letting some of their annual leave lapse. CNN —First lady Dr. Jill Biden is Vogue’s August cover star just as election season is kicking off in earnest in the United States — and only days after President Joe Biden’s shaky first debate performance rattled the Democratic party. On the cover — her second for the fashion magazine — Dr. Biden appears in a cream-colored Ralph Lauren silk tuxedo dress, lensed by the veteran fashion photographer Norman Jean Roy. Vogue, too, reached out to the first lady following the debate amid calls for the president to step down as the Democratic nominee. And, as she told Vogue, she’s seen the career-related frustrations of military spouses due to the often transient nature of their lives, so she has supported flexibility for remote work for some government jobs. “And this is where the magic happens.”“We don't need more chaos,” First Lady Biden told Vogue.

Across New York, a slew of Democratic primaries for State Assembly on Tuesday were expected to extend the battle lines between moderate and progressive Democrats over the direction of the party, a fight that has been raging since 2018. Instead, the prevailing factor seemed to be the power of incumbency. In one of the most-watched races, Assemblywoman Stefani Zinerman defeated Eon Huntley, who was supported by the Democratic Socialists of America. Ms. Zinerman, who represents the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood in Brooklyn, had the support of two of the biggest Democratic names in the state, Hakeem Jeffries, the House Democratic leader, and Letitia James, the New York State attorney general. In the Hudson Valley, Didi Barrett, a six-term assemblywoman, turned back a challenge from Claire Cousin, 31, a mother of three who was backed by the Working Families Party.
