Dodgers slugger Shohei Ohtani claimed in court papers this week that his former interpreter is in “wrongful possession” of valuable baseball cards that rightfully belong to him. Ohtani is seeking to recover $325,000 worth of baseball cards that he claims onetime assistant Ippei Mizuhara improperly bought earlier this year, according to a U.S. district court filing by the player and his attorney, Blair Berk. Some of those stolen funds were used on collectibles, Ohtani and his lawyer said in a federal court filing on Tuesday. BEIRUT — Islamist rebels breached neighborhoods in Syria’s second-largest city of Aleppo and clashed with government military forces after detonating two car bombs Friday. The Syrian Observatory of Human Rights, the monitoring organization, said fierce clashes were underway between the attacking insurgents and regime troops. Syrian armed forces were repelling attacks, the Syrian Defense ministry said Friday, adding government forces involved in combat operations were able to regain control over some areas. "Our armed forces have inflicted heavy losses on the attacking organizations, resulting in hundreds of deaths and injuries among the terrorists," Syria's general command of the army and armed forces said in a statement translated by NBC News. The Syrian civil war started in early 2011 with a wave of protests against the authoritarian rule of President Bashar al-Assad.

LONDON — British lawmakers voted on Friday in favor of a landmark bill that would for the first time help terminally ill adults end their lives. Assisted suicide is currently illegal in Britain and carries a prison sentence of up to 14 years. While the current prime minister Keir Starmer has previously opposed assisted dying, he has not said how he plans to vote Friday. But former-Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron this week said that he had reversed his opposition to the U.K. bill. The former prime minister wrote that the bill would apply to a very small number of cases and that “the NHS exists to serve patients and the public, not the other way around.”

Most of Connecticut's congressional delegation said they were the subject of bomb threats Thursday at their homes as they were preparing to celebrate Thanksgiving, although no bombs ultimately were found. "On Thanksgiving, Senator Murphy’s home in Hartford was the target of a bomb threat, which appears to be part of a coordinated effort involving multiple members of Congress and public figures," a spokesperson said in a statement. Similarly, Himes said in a statement on X that he was notified Thursday morning about a bomb threat targeting his home, though police found "no evidence of a bomb." Capitol Police said in January that it investigated more than 8,000 incidents involving threats to members of Congress last year, including "concerning statements and direct threats." Several of President-elect Donald Trump's planned administration officials were targeted with bomb and "swatting" threats Tuesday and Wednesday.

“The Seed of the Sacred Fig” is fiction, but at times it resembles a documentary about recent political turmoil. The paranoia at the heart of the “Sacred Fig” storyline sometimes mirrored the atmosphere on set, where the arrival of a stranger could spell doom for the filmmakers. It’s only natural to be afraid when you’re filming that way,” Rasoulof said. He chose to continue filming while his lawyers filed an appeal. “Sacred Fig” is now Germany’s entry for best international feature at the 97th Academy Awards in early March.

Macron was joined by his wife, Brigitte, and Laurent Ulrich, the archbishop of Paris, as he made his way around the restored building. Bright winter sunshine lit up the stained-glass windows and creamy stonework gleaming in place of huge charred holes. In the square outside, Macron was surrounded by crowds of cheering artisans, architects, business leaders and donors. The charred oak ceiling that was punctured by the spire that crashed into it has been replaced with new wood. “It was a challenge many deemed impossible, yet one we will have met on,” Macron said.

PEACHAM, Vt. — The last thing John and Jenny Mackenzie saw as they fled their Vermont home with their daughters, dog and two guinea pigs last summer was their cars upended and propelled away by rushing flood waters. “It was just like it was a horror movie at that point,” John Mackenzie said of the surreal scene on that July 10 night. “We lost both of our vehicles, our home and our barn and at least half of our possessions,” Jenny Mackenzie said. Donations from friends, family and others in their community have helped the Mackenzies find a new house in time for Thanksgiving, giving them hope amid ongoing challenges. “It’s unbelievable the way that we were supported and we’ve been trying to find ways to communicate that gratitude,” said John Mackenzie, 49.

BEIJING — China’s ByteDance is suing a former intern for $1.1 million, alleging he deliberately attacked its artificial intelligence large language model training infrastructure, a case that has drawn widespread attention within China amid a heated AI race. The parent company of TikTok is seeking 8 million yuan ($1.1 million) in damages from the former intern, Tian Keyu, in a lawsuit filed with the Haidian District People’s Court in Beijing, the state-owned Legal Weekly reported this week. While lawsuits between companies and employees are common in China, legal action against an intern and for such a large sum is unusual. Tian is alleged to have deliberately sabotaged the team’s model training tasks through code manipulation and unauthorized modifications, according to Legal Weekly, which cited an internal ByteDance memo. In a social media post in October, ByteDance said it had dismissed the intern in August.

“We had hoped that this agreement would be comprehensive and include the Gaza Strip, or at least a deal would be reached on a ceasefire and end the ongoing suffering here,” said Nasser, 40, who has been displaced from his home in northern Gaza. “There are great concerns here in the Gaza Strip that the ceasefire in Lebanon will become a reason for expanding military operations here in the Gaza Strip,” he added. On Thursday, Israeli strikes killed at least 17 Palestinians across the Gaza Strip as forces continued their bombardment of central areas and pushed farther north and south in the enclave. President Joe Biden on Thursday criticized President-elect Donald Trump's announcement that he will implement 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, saying the comments were "counterproductive." "I hope he rethinks it, and I think it's a counterproductive thing to do," Biden said, responding to a reporter's question about his reaction. Trump said Monday on Truth Social that one of his first executive orders would be to hit Mexico and Canada with a blanket 25% tariff. Mexico and Canada are the second and third top suppliers of goods to the U.S., according to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. "In our conversation with President Trump, I explained to him the comprehensive strategy that Mexico has followed to address the migration phenomenon, respecting human rights,” she said in Spanish on X.

But some customers say they’ve had a hard time getting AHS to respond to common issues like those. The tariffs would be a significant escalation of Trump’s previous proposal, which was already a major increase on more targeted tariffs enacted during Trump’s first administration and kept in place by President Joe Biden. Canada is similarly considering its own options, including possible tariffs on U.S. goods, according to The Associated Press. America’s biggest import from Canada is oil — and any increase in energy prices would likely be felt throughout the economy. And in her statement reacting to Trump’s posts, Mexico’s Sheinbaum stated caravans of migrants were no longer reaching the border. And now he’s talking about tariffs to punish Mexico and Canada for not enforcing drugs and migrants across the border.

President-elect Donald Trump made the disco classic “Y.M.C.A.” a staple at his rallies during his past two campaigns. And new data shows that, much like Trump’s political fortunes, interest in the song is on the upswing. ‘Y.M.C.A.,’” Trump said on a podcast in 2022. “‘Y.M.C.A.’ gets people up and it gets them moving.”The dance caught on outside of Trump’s political orbit this year, when athletes began mimicking his moves when they celebrated on the field.
