Here’s the latest:‘Impossible’ hospital evacuationIsraeli airstrikes have “caused extensive damage to hospital departments and exposed residents and patients to suffocation” at the Al-Quds Hospital, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society said Sunday. The medical organization accused Israel of “deliberately” launching airstrikes “directly next to” the facility in order to force an evacuation of the hospital, the second-largest in Gaza City. The governing Palestinian Islamist group Hamas accused Israel of carrying out an air strike on the hospital. Israel denied that, saying the blast was caused by a Palestinian rocket falling short after being launched at Israel. Asked during a visit to Jerusalem if he could corroborate a figure for the fatalities, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby told reporters: "I have no idea about how many civilians there were.

Once the generators stop, hospital director Iyad Abu Zahar fears that the babies in the ward, unable to breathe on their own, will perish. Doctors treating premature babies across Gaza are grappling with similar fears. At least 130 premature babies are at “grave risk” across six neonatal units, aid workers said. Limited fuel supplies inside Gaza were being sent to hospital generators. To ration dwindling supplies, Muhanna said all scheduled operations were stopped and the hospital devoted all its resources to emergencies and childbirths.

A video showing the bombing of a building in Gaza in May 2023 has been shared on social media as if it was filmed during the October 2023 clashes between militant Islamist group Hamas and Israel. Reuters, citing Palestinian officials, reported that an explosion at a Gaza hospital on Oct. 17 killed at least 500 people. The video shows a blast destroying a light orange-colored building surrounded by trees that then collapses in a cloud of smoke and dust. Al Jazeera also shared the video on YouTube on May 13, 2023 and said it shows an attack in Gaza. The video shows an airstrike on a building in May, not October, 2023.

Palestinian officials said 471 people were killed in the blast at Al-Ahli al-Arabi Hospital late on Tuesday. Gaza's health ministry blamed an Israeli air strike, while Israel said the blast was caused by a failed rocket launch by militants. "We judge that Israel was not responsible," said the unclassified U.S. intelligence report. We are still assessing the likely casualty figures and our assessment may evolve, but this death toll still reflects a staggering loss of life," the report said. The report said "only light structural damage at the hospital" has been observed and there was "no observable damage to the main hospital building and no impact craters."

Asia frets on Middle East risks, looming China data

"A major spike in volatility and a downgrade of the global economic growth outlook is possible." The threat to the global economy comes just as China is set to release data likely showing annual economic growth slowed sharply in the third quarter to around 4.4%. Figures for retail sales and industrial output for September will also offer insight into whether activity is finally responding to Beijing's recent stimulus measures. Bonds took that badly, with two-year yields surging as much as 14 basis points on Tuesday to a 16-year peak of 5.24%. Oil prices swung higher once more, driven by data showing a fall in crude stocks and amid concerns over the Middle East.

The Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East, which runs the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital, said the hospital’s parking lot, and not the hospital building itself, was directly hit in Tuesday’s explosion. Hosam Naoum, the Anglican Archbishop in Jerusalem, declined to assign blame for the blast during a news conference Wednesday. The church initially put out a statement on Tuesday saying it had been struck “during Israeli airstrikes.”Naoum declined to discuss a death toll, but said up to 5,000 people at various points in recent days had taken refuge on the grounds of the hospital, which was founded in the 1880s and is funded largely by the European Union and the Episcopal Church. “We know the casualties were many,” said the archbishop, without elaborating. He called on President Biden to push for justice and peace.

Global bond markets also still nursed heavy losses as strong U.S. retail data argued for a punishingly long stretch of high rates. The outlook for the world economy did take a small turn for the better as China reported annual economic growth of 4.9% in the third quarter, beating forecasts for 4.4%. Retail sales and industrial output for September also surprised on the upside, suggesting activity had been gaining momentum. "A major spike in volatility and a downgrade of the global economic growth outlook is possible." Oil prices swung higher once more, driven by concerns over the Middle East and data showing a fall in crude stocks.

Rescue personnel work at scene At Al-Ahli Hospital, after hundreds of Palestinians were killed in a blast at Al-Ahli hospital in Gaza that Israeli and Palestinian officials blamed on each other in Gaza City, Gaza Strip, in this screen grab obtained from video, October 17, 2023. Some Western countries have called for an investigation, without pointing the finger at this stage, while Arab states have blamed Israel. Founded 1882 and run by the Anglican church, Al Ahli Arab Hospital described itself on its website as "a haven of peace in the middle of one of the world’s most troubled places". It is located in the Zeitoun neighbourhood of Gaza City, which lies in the northern region of the Gaza Strip. Israel previously told Palestinians in the north of Gaza, including people in Gaza City, to move south for their own safety.

Israel and the U.S. said the cause was a failed rocket launch by anti-Israeli Palestinian militants in Gaza who denied responsibility. Amid fears the conflict could spread beyond Gaza, Biden had planned to meet Arab leaders. But Jordan called off his planned summit there with Egypt and the Palestinian Authority after the hospital blast. During Biden's visit, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said Israel would let food, water and medicines reach southern Gaza via Egypt. En route to Washington, Biden told reporters he was blunt with Israel about the need to facilitate aid to Gaza.

The vote follows the council’s rejection Monday evening of a Russian-drafted resolution that condemned violence and terrorism against civilians and called for a “humanitarian cease-fire” but made no mention of Hamas. One calls for a “humanitarian cease-fire.” The other would condemn indiscriminate attacks on civilians and assaults on “civilian objects” in Gaza like hospitals and schools that deprive people of the means to survive. To be adopted, a resolution needs at least nine of the 15 council members to vote “yes” and no veto by a permanent member. The council vote was taking place amid frantic diplomatic efforts to prevent the Israeli-Hamas conflict from spreading. The five permanent Security Council nations are also invited, he said.

KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — A massive blast rocked a Gaza City hospital packed with wounded and other Palestinians seeking shelter Tuesday, killing hundreds of people, the Hamas-run Health Ministry said. Hamas blamed an Israeli airstrike, while the Israeli military said the hospital was hit by a rocket misfired by Palestinian militants. Hamas' Oct. 7, attack in southern Israel killed more than 1,400 people, mostly civilians, and took some 200 captive into Gaza. In Gaza City, Israeli airstrikes also hit the house of Hamas’ top political official, Ismail Haniyeh, killing at least 14 people. Haniyeh is based in Doha, Qatar, but his family lives in Gaza City.

Obesity revolution gorges on dialysis maker

REUTERS/Megan Jelinger Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Oct 11 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Kidney dialysis kit-makers look set to be the latest victim of the obesity drug boom. On Wednesday, shares in Germany-listed Fresenius Medical Care (FMEG.DE) fell 20% after a medical trial showed a Novo Nordisk (NOVOb.CO) drug can reduce the risk of kidney failure. Diabetes and obesity drugs are showing their fringe benefits. In a recent drug trial, Wegovy, an obesity remedy made by Denmark’s Novo Nordisk, reduced the incidence of serious cardiovascular events like strokes and heart attacks by 20% in overweight patients. The collapse in Fresenius Medical Care’s share price looks appropriate.

A new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that COVID-19 hospitalization is a “continued public health threat” that predominantly affects adults ages 65 and older. The study looked at hospitalizations from January to August and found that adults ages 65 and older accounted for 63% of all hospitalizations associated with COVID-19. Nearly all hospitalized individuals ages 65 and older had two or more underlying medical conditions. Despite the issues, uptake of the shot is likely to be significantly higher than the last round of boosters. Broken down by age group, about two-thirds of adults ages 65 and older are likely to get the vaccine.

An Alibaba Group sign is seen at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, July 6, 2023. Alibaba on Friday launched a new artificial intelligence model that the company says can understand images and carry out more complex conversations than the company's previous products, as the global race for leadership in the technology heats up. Alibaba said that Qwen-VL can respond to open-ended queries related to different images and generate picture captions. Qwen-VL-Chat meanwhile caters to more "complex interaction," according to Alibaba, such as comparing multiple image inputs and answering several rounds of questions. The latest version of OpenAI's ChatGPT also has the ability to understand images and respond in text, much like Qwen-VL-Chat.

The Case for Home Births in America

BIRTH CONTROL: The Insidious Power of Men Over Motherhood, by Allison YarrowSeventeen years ago, while pregnant with twins, I was hospitalized for pre-eclampsia before undergoing a cesarean delivery days later. After delivery, I was left alone and shivering in a separate room for easily an hour, without anyone to ask when I could hold my newborn children. At the time, I was only grateful we were all healthy; the submission and alienation the process engendered always seemed beside the point. Yarrow systemically makes the case that the dominant methods of childbirth in America are the clumsy evolution of earlier medical practices that were designed to protect the privilege, status and convenience of 20th-century male doctors. Yarrow convincingly recasts this country’s maternal health care system as needlessly dehumanizing, prioritizing expediency and profit over the best interests of a population of women rendered vulnerable.

CNN —Clinical overuse of marijuana is linked to a variety of complications after major elective surgery, including blood clots, stroke, breathing difficulties, kidney issues and even death, a new study found. Compared with people who were not overly dependent or addicted to marijuana, those with cannabis use disorder were more likely to suffer complications from those surgeries. The most significant associations were for blockages of coronary arteries, stroke, injury to the kidneys, blood clots, breathing complications, infection and in-hospital death, the study found. People with cannabis use disorder also stayed in the hospital longer and had higher hospital bills than people without the disorder. “In the context of increasing cannabis use rates, our findings support preoperative screening for cannabis use disorder,” the authors wrote.

WARSAW, June 30 (Reuters) - A Polish woman and her 7-year-old son have died after plunging from a Baltic Sea ferry travelling from Sweden to Poland, a Polish police spokesman said on Friday. Swedish authorities said on Thursday the child had fallen off the vessel and that the mother proceeded to jump overboard in an attempted rescue. The Swedish ferry, Stena Spirit, was in the Baltic midway through its journey to Gdynia in Poland from Karlskrona in Sweden when the incident occurred, rescue officials said on Thursday. "At the moment we have no information whether this was due to a malfunction of the ferry," Stena Line spokesperson Agnieszka Zembrzycka told TVN 24. Swedish police issued an appeal to Polish passengers via Poland's state-run news agency PAP asking for information that could explain how the accident occurred.

June 7 (Reuters) - European regulators have approved the region's first vaccine for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which causes thousands of hospitalisations and deaths annually. The shot, called Arexvy, is made by British drugmaker GSK (GSK.L) and is designed to protect people aged 60 and over. The complex molecular structure of the virus and safety concerns with previous vaccine attempts had stymied efforts to successfully develop a shot since the virus was first discovered in 1956. Given the different definitions of the trial endpoints across the GSK and Pfizer trials, a direct comparison of efficacy is difficult. In Europe, RSV leads to over 270,000 hospitalisations and about 20,000 in-hospital deaths in adults over 60 each year.
