In today's big story, all eyes are on Nvidia's earnings report after the bell and what it says about the chip giant's future. As the world's top provider of AI chips, demand for Blackwell is a bellwether for the industry's appetite for continued investment in AI. Reports of Blackwell chips overheating spooked the market earlier this week. AdvertisementIt's another cost companies investing in AI chips need to consider in addition to the energy required to fuel them, which has been a headache for tech giants . Barclays trimmed earning estimates next year by as much as 10% for some of the biggest buyers of AI chips, like Meta, Amazon, and Alphabet.

AdvertisementLawyers for Donald Trump on Wednesday demanded the immediate dismissal of his hush-money case. Trump can't be sentenced while either president-elect or president, they argued. Donald Trump's legal team filed for immediate dismissal of his New York hush-money case on Wednesday, arguing that he cannot be sentenced while either president-elect or president. "On November 5, 2024, the Nation's People issued a mandate that supersedes the political motivations of DANY's 'People,'" the defense filing concludes, using the acronym for the District Attorney of New York. Back in late September, I laid out a bearish thesis on Apple and the trade expired last Friday and resulted in a 100% gain. Apple (AAPL) continues to face significant headwinds, with disappointing iPhone 16 sales, growing competition in augmented reality, and underwhelming progress in artificial intelligence (AI). China's slowing economy has weighed heavily on Apple, exacerbating challenges in one of its largest markets. While Apple boasts industry-leading net margins of 24%, its expected EPS growth of 11.6% and revenue growth of 6.9% provide limited justification for this valuation premium. With iPhone sales growth faltering and the lack of a clear catalyst from AI or AR/VR initiatives, AAPL's premium valuation remains increasingly difficult to sustain.

CFRA Research says investors should temper expectationsJustin Sullivan/GettyAccording to CFRA Research analyst Angelo Zino, investors should manage expectations around guidance for Nvidia's highly anticipated Blackwell launch. Still, Zino expects Blackwell chips will be sold out for much of 2025. "We expect Blackwell to be supply constrained through CY 25, given heightened demand from hyperscalers to support next-generation data centers. In addition to Blackwell expectations/performance concerns that will likely dominate NVDA's Q&A session on the call, we expect investors to dissect any comments on tariffs/Sovereign AI after Trump's victory," Zino said. CFRA Research rates Nvidia at "Buy" with a $160 price target.

A changing ChinaIt was a different world in the late 2000s and early 2010s, when Chinese students first began surging overseas. In 2020, the US revoked visas for more than 1,000 Chinese students and researchers deemed security risks. In January this year, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said in a briefing that “dozens of Chinese nationals, including international students, have been forcibly deported by the US each month.” He decried it as “discriminatory,” urging the US to protect the rights of Chinese students abroad. The Covid yearsThe number of Chinese students in the US plunged during the pandemic and hasn’t rebounded since. “Since the economic sanctions and tech restrictions started in 2018, many (Chinese) students have been sent back home,” one user wrote on Weibo.

After having called more than 30 witnesses, the prosecution in the manslaughter trial of Daniel Penny, who is charged in the chokehold death of Jordan Neely, rested its case Monday. Penny put him in a chokehold that lasted about six minutes, prosecutors have said and evidence presented at trial has shown. Penny’s attorneys have said he acted to protect himself and other subway riders from “a seething, psychotic” Neely. Again and again, Harris answered that she believed the chokehold was the most probable cause of Neely’s death. Harris testified Friday that she based her ruling on her autopsy findings, coupled with the video and the investigative information about it.

AdvertisementTwo of the reported candidates for Treasury Secretary made their fortunes on Wall Street, including billionaire Apollo CEO Marc Rowan. Eligible federal appointees can defer capital gains taxes indefinitely when they sell stock or other assets in order to avoid a conflict of interest. As a top earner in New York, they would normally have to pay more than $3 million in capital gains taxes. The sum that would have been spent on capital gains taxes is now free to compound and grow. The IRS allows investors to defer capital gains taxes in other scenarios that are deemed outside their control.

The stock prices for H&R Block and Intuit fell after a Tuesday report saying the Trump transition team is considering creating a free tax-filing app. President-elect Donald Trump's "Department of Government Efficiency" has held "highly preliminary" discussions about creating the free tax-filing app, The Washington Post reported. A DOGE tax-filing app would represent a competitor for both H&R Block and TurboTax. It's unclear where a new DOGE tax app would bridge with newer policies the Biden administration already implemented. The IRS also offers free filing services through its Free File program for taxpayers who make an adjusted gross income of $79,000 or less.

“The governor will defer to the DA-elect’s review and analysis of the Menendez case prior to making any clemency decisions.”Current District Attorney George Gascón, who has voiced strong support for the Menendez brothers’ clemency petition and submitted letters to the governor advocating for them, requested a judge in October to resentence the siblings, who are serving life without parole. With Hochman set to take office in December, questions have arisen about the future of the resentencing effort and the clemency process. The brothers, family members and the public deserve a thorough review, Hochman said. The renewed examination of the Menendez case comes more than 35 years after Jose and Kitty Menendez were shot dead in their Beverly Hills home. In the subsequent trial, much of the evidence regarding the alleged abuse was deemed inadmissible, resulting in the brothers’ conviction and life sentences.

CNN —This has been a blockbuster election year politically, so it’s fitting that a new movie shines a light on an ancient and highly secretive voting process: the selection of a new pope. Brían F. O'Byrne as Cardinal O'Malley (L) and Ralph Fiennes as Cardinal Lawrence (R) in the movie "Conclave." They cast them in the Sistine Chapel, in front of the awe-inspiring sight of Michelangelo’s “Last Judgment,” writing their choices on paper ballots that are then burnt after being counted. The crowd waiting outside is informed that a pope has been elected when the chimney above the Sistine Chapel billows out white smoke.
