There’s a stickiness to “Mean Girls” quotes. As a child, I watched the movie over and over on DVD, and the words wormed their way into my impressionable mind. “Every single sound bite.”Jayne is a co-director of a new version of “Mean Girls,” which came out on Friday. It’s an adaptation of an adaptation, refashioning songs from the 2018 Broadway musical based on the movie. Like its predecessor, the new “Mean Girls” follows Cady Heron (Angourie Rice), a teenager who has arrived at an American high school after being home-schooled by her zoologist parents in Kenya.

Read previewAs it turns out, millennials can sit with the new "Mean Girls." But contrary to the marketing that made millennials feel ancient, the new "Mean Girls" isn't trying to push its thirtysomething viewers in front of a bus. The trailer called millennials old to their faces in a bold, pink-lettered declaration: "This isn't your mother's 'Mean Girls.'" Her talent is indisputable and can easily be recognized and appreciated by a member of any generation who finds themselves in a theater showing "Mean Girls" this winter. Thankfully, making a "Mean Girls" movie that isn't for millennials is just as impossible as making fetch happen — but the fact that they ever tried to still isn't grool.

That blurred distinction is a hallmark of Miyazaki, whose films (among them “Howl’s Moving Castle,” “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Spirited Away”) are windows into the subconscious. In interviews collected in the book “Starting Point: 1979-1996,” Miyazaki referred to a universal “yearning for a lost world” he refused to call nostalgia, since even children experience it. But that heron (voiced by Masaki Suda) keeps appearing, luring him toward the tower, taunting him with forbidden knowledge. (Robert Pattinson voices the heron in an English-language version that features Christian Bale, Gemma Chan and many others.) Even by his standards, though, “The Boy and the Heron” is enigmatic, at least regarding plot.

Actors secured these new safeguards as part of a deal announced late on Wednesday, according to Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, chief negotiator for the SAG-AFTRA actors union. The proposed agreement sets a minimum compensation level for AI uses, Crabtree-Ireland said. Crabtree-Ireland said the proposed contract also included safeguards around the use of generative AI to create synthetic actors. "They are being ultra cautious," said Scott Mann, co-CEO and founder of Flawless, a company that uses AI for film dubbing and editing. Film and television writers also won protections around AI use after a five-month-long strike by the Writers Guild of America this year.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A former Philadelphia police officer has been sentenced to 15 to 40 years in state prison after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting women and girls — often while in uniform and in the back of his police vehicle. Patrick Heron, 54, entered the pleas Friday after reaching an agreement with prosecutors in advance of a trial on more than 200 counts that included child sex assault, child pornography, kidnapping and related offenses, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. Jane Roh, spokesperson for the district attorney’s office, said victims who are now spared the trauma of a trial welcomed the guilty plea. Investigators said they later found photos and videos indicating predatory behavior spanning years and including dozens of often vulnerable young women and girls including those who had run away, been arrested or struggled with addiction. She said investigators have identified 48 victims, though many of their identities remain unknown, and more likely haven't come forward.

BRUSSELS, Oct 12 (Reuters) - Defence ministers at NATO's Brussels headquarters watched stunned as their Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant on Thursday showed them "shocking" and "horrific" video from the Hamas attack on Israeli civilians, diplomats said. Gallant, who remotely attended the one-hour NATO session, briefed ministers on the attack and showed them what the Times of Israel, which was the first to report on it, called an "uncensored video of Hamas atrocities". In a statement after the session with Gallant, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg declared: "Israel does not stand alone." On Wednesday, Stoltenberg said Israel had the right to defend itself and NATO expected its response to the Hamas attack to be proportionate. Tokyo CNN —The iconic Japanese animation company Studio Ghibli, which created internationally beloved films including “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Spirited Away,” has been sold to Nippon TV after failing to find a successor for its legendary co-founder and director Hayao Miyazaki. “With director Hayao Miyazaki now 82 years old and producer Toshio Suzuki also 75, Studio Ghibli has long been struggling with the issue of their successors,” the statement said. Nippon TV and Studio Ghibli have long worked together, with the former broadcasting Ghibli films on air, investing in Ghibli movie productions, and even helping fund the Ghibli Museum, the statement said. Under the new arrangement, Nippon TV will become the largest Ghibli shareholder with 42.3% of the voting rights. Since its founding in 1985, Studio Ghibli has been known for its hand-drawn animation, sticking to old-school, painstaking frame-by-frame methods.

The movie is also inspired by how Miyazaki himself felt after the war and coped with the loss of his mother. For Miyazaki, who painstakingly crafts thousands of hand drawings for a film, it's a long and laborious process. Several of Miyazaki's films rank among the biggest box-office hits ever in Japan; there are few other filmmakers today as revered — and fiercely beloved — as Miyazaki. “I am making this movie because I do not have the answer," Miyazaki told The New York Times in 2021. We are again, invited into a dizzyingly colorful otherworldly fantasy of Miyazaki's making. If this is to be the last Miyazaki movie (it would be unwise to ever really count him out), it's a tremendously moving goodbye.
