The US's first electric vertical-takeoff and -landing aircraft are expected to fly commercial passengers as soon as 2025. It still needs further approvals to fly for airlines like United, but the latest certificate puts it one step closer. When historians and political scientists rank presidents from best to worst, Donald Trump invariably comes out at the bottom. This year, to give one example, the 2024 Presidential Greatness Project released the results of a survey of 154 current and former members of the Presidents and Executive Politics Section of the American Political Science Association. The highest ranked included no surprises: on a scale of 0 to 100, Abraham Lincoln (95.03), Franklin Delano Roosevelt (90.83), George Washington (90.32), Teddy Roosevelt (78.58) and Thomas Jefferson (77.53). Dead last: Donald Trump (10.92), substantially below James Buchanan (16.71), Andrew Johnson (21.56), Franklin Pierce (24.6) and William Henry Harrison (26.01).

The disappointment is that Henry didn’t manage to increase membership in her own union. In fact, S.E.I.U.’s membership fell to under 1.9 million now from about 2.1 million when she took office. Those workers at McDonald’s, Burger King and other chains who are enjoying higher pay aren’t paying dues to any conventional union. It continues to claim “about” two million members. But in a filing with the Department of Labor in March, the union stated that it had 1,845,500 members, of which 30,015 were retired.

Real estate and related sectors once accounted for about one fifth or more of China's economy, depending on the breadth of analysts' calculations. Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry, leaves the auditorium after speaking to students during a public lecture on bilateral engagement between Kenya and Haiti, at the United States International University (USIU) Africa, in Nairobi on March 1, 2024. Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry has resigned as head of the Caribbean nation, the leader of a regional body said on Monday, an unelected role the 74-year-old neurosurgeon has held since the 2021 assassination of the country's last president. "We acknowledge his resignation upon the establishment of transitional presidential council and naming an interim prime minister," said Caribbean Community (CARICOM) chair and Guyanese President Irfaan Ali, thanking Henry for his service to Haiti. Ali said the presidential council would have two observers and seven voting members, including representatives from several coalitions, the private sector, civil society and one religious leader. The council has been mandated to "swiftly" appoint an interim prime minister, he added, and anyone who intends to run in Haiti's next elections will not be able participate.

In Henry’s place, a transitional council will be established and endowed with some powers of the presidency – including the ability to name a new interim prime minister. It is unclear how long it could take to establish a transitional council to begin the transfer of power, though Haiti’s former PM Claude Joseph told CNN that it could be created within 24 hours. The big question is whether these changes can bring calm to Haiti, and put a stop to the terrible violence tearing apart Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince. Talks with regional leaders continued, leading into the emergency CARICOM meeting on Monday. Gang violence has plunged Haiti, a Caribbean nation with a long history of upheaval, into one of its worst periods of chaos. The country’s embattled prime minister, Ariel Henry, has been stranded for days in Puerto Rico as the gang takeover has made it impossible for him to return. Mr. Henry had traveled to Kenya last week to make final arrangements for the East African country to deploy 1,000 police officers in a U.N.-sanctioned mission to quell the violence. But the deepening chaos is raising doubts about whether the plan can move forward. The Biden administration is increasing pressure on Mr. Henry to establish what Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, called “a presidential transitional council that will lead to elections.”
