How F1 can help engineer the world's net-zero future
  + stars: | 2024-11-04 | by ( Chris Hawes | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
F1 produced 223,031 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2022, with almost 75% coming from travel and shipping. Unlike soccer, which produces more than 30 million metric tons per year by some estimates, F1 has the engineering capabilities to provide solutions. As reported in April, these goals are difficult to square with F1's decision to increase the number of races in its calendar. The final pedal F1 can push is energy efficiency, and teams are already looking for ways to transfer learnings from the track to their infrastructure. "We want to take that approach ... and apply it to the building and infrastructure side of the campus as well."

She told police she “knew something was going to happen.”On October 24, shots rang out as Harris entered his former high school.

In states where tensions have long boiled over reproductive rights, family planning experts say women face mounting barriers to getting birth control. In June, Senate Republicans blocked a bill that would have enshrined a national right to birth control into law. States have been left to decide if they will protect access to birth control. The Right Time initiative is part of Michelle Trupiano's work at Missouri Family Health Council that reduces costs and helps Missourians to obtain birth control. She works at a family planning clinic that is benefiting from Title X funding, which means right now, uninsured patients can get birth control through the clinic.

But the motivation for his first 26.2 mile race is personal: to advocate for gun violence prevention. Bosley and his family have dedicated their lives to stopping gun violence and helping loved ones of those lost to it. While rates of gun violence in Chicago have decreased in recent years, it’s still an ongoing problem. Data from the Chicago Police Department revealed the city’s gun violence and homicide rates dropped by 13% in 2023 to pre-pandemic levels. ADP said it was the best month for job creation since July 2023. “Even amid hurricane recovery, job growth was strong in October,” ADP chief economist Nela Richardson said. CNN —Israel’s parliament has voted to ban a nearly eight-decade-old United Nations agency that provides essential services for Palestinian refugees, a move that could have devastating consequences for millions of Palestinians living under Israeli occupation. The move is expected to severely restrict the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) from operating in territories Israel occupies. In the Gaza Strip, which has been ravaged by a devastating Israeli war for more than a year, UNRWA serves some 1.7 million Palestinian refugees. Harris presidency, split government A victory for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the White House, plus a Republican-controlled Congress, could be "the best outcome" for online media companies, according to Bank of America analyst Justin Post. He noted that Harris is likely to enforce a potential ban on TikTok — which could boost Meta Platforms and Snapchat . Trump president, split government A win for Republican candidate Donald Trump and a split government would be the best-case scenario for bank stocks, per analyst Ebrahim Poonawala. CNN —More than 2,000 unionized mental health workers in Southern California went on strike against Kaiser Permanente on Monday after the two sides failed to reach a new labor agreement. The National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW) — which represents 19,000 healthcare workers in California and Hawaii, including 4,700 mental health workers — picketed outside Kaiser facilities in Los Angeles, San Diego, Anaheim and Fontana, seeking an increase in salaries, restoration of pensions and increased staffing. Union members on strike in Southern California have said their demands are line in with what Kaiser has provided to the majority of its workforce. Kaiser, one of the nation’s largest non-profit healthcare providers, is required by law to provide mental health services to its members even with the workers on strike. A survey in 2022 from CNN in partnership with the Kaiser Family Foundation showed that nine out of 10 US adults believe the country has a mental health crisis.

LONDON — U.S. pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly is exploring whether obesity drugs could be used to curb joblessness after signing a major investment deal with the U.K. The weight-loss treatment firm and creator of Zepbound announced Monday that it would commit £279 million ($364 million) to help tackle Britain’s significant health challenges — including obesity. Within that, the five-year trial, conducted in collaboration with Health Innovation Manchester, will also explore how weight-loss drugs impact “participants’ employment status and sick days from work,” the company said in a news release. The use cases for obesity drugs have been growing over recent months, with several drug regulators expanding GLP-1 drug labels for use in treating obesity-related comorbidities and other illnesses. The company said it anticipates making an additional £279 million of new investment into the U.K. over the coming years.

Novavax on Wednesday said the Food and Drug Administration has put a hold on its application for a combination shot targeting Covid and influenza and a standalone flu vaccine, sending the company's shares down sharply. A clinical hold is an order issued by the FDA to a manufacturer to delay or suspend a proposed clinical investigation on a drug. Still, it appears to be a setback for the biotech company, which is scrambling to bring new products to market as demand for its Covid vaccine plummets worldwide. Novavax said it was working with the FDA to resolve the clinical hold on its combination shot and standalone flu vaccine. Novavax's shot, meanwhile, fends off the virus with protein-based technology, a decades-old method used in routine vaccinations against hepatitis B and shingles.
