For years, my party go-to has been Sheldon Simeon’s pan sushi dynamite, a recipe from his excellent cookbook, “Cook Real Hawai’i.” Pan sushi — or sushi bake — never fails to delight. It’s a generous sheet of sushi rice topped with fish that has been baked just long enough to marry with its sauce, placed on the table with palm-size squares of nori for D.I.Y. Naz’s recipe has the same sushi-casserole heart, but with California roll vibes. Imitation crab is mixed with cream cheese, mayo and Sriracha, baked on vinegary sushi rice, showered with furikake and topped with sliced cucumber and avocado. Naz notes that you can use canned tuna or salmon (or, indeed, real crab) instead; I can confidently confirm that sushi bake is a great use of canned salmon.

Aug 22 (Reuters) - Hawaiian Electric Industries (HE.N) said on Tuesday it was seeking advice from boutique advisory firm Guggenheim Securities, after questions were raised over the utility's role in the Maui wildfires. "We are seeking advice from various experts as we position HEI and Hawaiian Electric to be the strong, financially healthy local utility that the people of Maui and Hawai‘i need over the long term," the company said. Shares of Hawaiian Electric, which were down 2.4% at the open, reversed course, and were up 1.3% at $13.21 in afternoon trading. Fitch on Monday downgraded Hawaiian Electric's credit rating to junk status, becoming the third ratings agency to flag risks associated with the utility's potential exposure to liabilities related to the wildfire. Fitch said potential liabilities could be above $3.8 billion, which represents an "existential threat" to the company.

CNN —Musician Mick Fleetwood of the famed group Fleetwood Mac said his restaurant, Fleetwood’s on Front St, in Lahaina, Hawai’i has been lost due to the wildfires raging there. The “older neighborhood” of Lahaina, an economic hub in western Maui that drew millions of tourists each year, is destroyed, Maui County Mayor Richard T. Slightly less than a quarter of New Zealand’s 892,200 Maori speak te reo Maori as one of their first languages, according to the latest government data. Part of the reason that te reo Maori is not so widely spoken is that back in New Zealand’s colonial era there were active efforts to stamp it out. Webcam imagery shows fissures at the base of Halemaʻumaʻu crater generating lava flows on the surface of the crater floor. The activity is confined to Halemaʻumaʻu and the hazards will be reassessed as the eruption progresses,” the HVO said. The eruption is currently confined within the Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. The world's largest active volcano has erupted in Hawaii for the first time in nearly four decades, officials said. Mauna Loa erupted at 11:30 p.m. local time Sunday night (4:30 a.m. EST on Monday), the United States Geological Survey said. It was the first eruption since 1984, according to the Hawaii Volcano Observatory daily update, issued by the U.S. Geological Survey. Residents at risk from Mauna Loa lava flows were warned to "review preparedness and refer to Hawai‘i County Civil Defense information for further guidance."
