Haley’s exit, 51 days after the Iowa caucuses, makes 2024 one of the fastest-narrowing primary fields in recent history. In 2008, Senator John McCain secured the delegates for the Republican nomination on March 4, 61 days after the Iowa caucuses and about a month after that year’s Super Tuesday. No other competitive primary fields since 2004 narrowed to a final candidate within 100 days of the Iowa caucuses. In some instances, losing candidates have remained in the race even after the eventual nominee secured the required delegates.

To start with, who are the Republican voters that Trump will have the most trouble getting to the polls in November? In South Carolina, it was 36% of voters in the Republican primary (and Trump won 18% of them). In New Hampshire, it was 46% (and Trump won 22% of them). Biden won four of 2020’s battleground states by 2% or less, and Trump won North Carolina, the closest battleground state in which he prevailed, by just a little over a point. Her effort isn’t harmless, however: It does force the Trump campaign to spend money that could otherwise be put toward taking on Biden.

Welcome to Super Tuesday, when millions of Americans in 15 states and one territory will head to the polls for contests that will set the stage for November’s pivotal elections. His increasingly probable victory is lining up a rematch with President Biden, who ousted Mr. Trump from the White House in their 2020 race. But polls suggest that Mr. Trump is very likely to win most, if not all, of those states. It is mathematically impossible for Mr. Trump to win the nomination on Super Tuesday. And unless Ms. Haley pulls off a serious upset in Tuesday’s contests, Mr. Trump will be on track to win the nomination by the end of March.

His performance so far reflects his success at transforming the Republican Party in his image. The most important message from the primaries is the most straightforward: Trump’s coalition is the dominant faction in the GOP. Like McConnell’s announcement, the choices by GOP elected officials in the primary contest signal their acknowledgement of the party’s direction. The share of GOP elected officials who have endorsed Haley isn’t anywhere near as large as her share of the total vote. But a deeper factor also explains the imbalance in support among GOP elected officials.

Nikki Haley still thinks she has a role to play in the Republican primary. Haley told NBC she would stay in the race “as long as we’re competitive” with front-runner former President Donald Trump. A little more than a third of Republican delegates are up for grabs in 15 contests across the country on Super Tuesday. CNN —GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley suggested she’s no longer bound by a Republican National Committee pledge to support the eventual nominee, saying that she’ll “make the decision I want to make” when asked whether she would endorse Donald Trump if he secures the nomination. “The RNC is now not the same RNC.”As part of the criteria to appear on the GOP primary debate stage, the RNC required presidential candidates to sign a pledge committing to support the eventual GOP nominee. “So you’re no longer bound by that pledge?” NBC host Kristen Welker asked Haley. “No, I think I’ll make the decision I want to make, but that’s not something I’m thinking about,” she responded. CNN —Mitch McConnell has bowed to political reality and announced that he is relinquishing his role as leader of Senate Republicans. (Chao served as transportation secretary under former President Donald Trump, before quitting the post following the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol.) The anti-Trump coalition within the Republican Party is small and hanging on by a thread, and there is little chance of that changing in the short term. Now, one of Haley’s most generous benefactors, the conservative political action committee Americans for Prosperity, funded by the Koch network, has withdrawn its funds. And now, like other Trump opponents, Romney finds himself heading for the exit at the end of his current term.
