"The IDF is committed to conducting a thorough review and investigation," the military said. Asked about the Be'eri incident, the Israeli military spokesperson, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said the army was still focused on fighting in Gaza but was preparing its investigation. "We will emerge on the other side strengthened and much better, and that is exactly what we need," he said.

The Israeli psyche resembles an archaeological site of layers of unresolved traumas, ordinary life interrupted by history. This is the first war I’ve experienced that seems existential. Not in an immediate sense: Israel will not disappear tomorrow if it fails to meet its stated goal of destroying Hamas. But Israelis intuitively understand that if this round of fighting ends with one more stalemate, then our military deterrence—shattered by the mass but intimate butchery of Oct. 7—could be irretrievable. Without credible deterrence, we have “nothing to look for,” as Israeli slang puts it, in the Middle East.

CNN witnessed the skies of Northern Gaza illuminated by flares and explosions as the bombardment intensified late Thursday night. Israel Defense Forces spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus claimed the strike was targeting a Hamas commander hiding in an underground bunker and that when the complex imploded it possibly collapsed nearby buildings. The Israel military says there are fuel supplies in Gaza being held by Hamas, which are not being distributed for humanitarian purposes, CNN has reported. Pentagon officials believe Israel has been striking legitimate Hamas targets, including some senior commanders. Blinken plans to raise the issue in his talks with Israeli officials Friday, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Netanyahu’s tweet comes at a time when he is also under increasing pressure from the families of hostages for a “comprehensive deal” to ensure their release. “At no point was a warning given to Prime Minister Netanyahu on Hamas’s intention to start a war. Opposition leader and former Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid also rebuked Netanyahu. Things I said following the press conference should not have been said and I apologize for that,” he wrote on X. Israel’s security chiefs had his “full backing,” he added. Netanyahu was asked about such a deal at his Saturday news conference, and acknowledged he discussed the option with the families.

Back then, Israel defeated the armies of three Arab states — Egypt, Syria and Jordan — in what became known as the Six-Day War. Today, if you look closely, you’ll see that Israel is now fighting the Six-Front War. But one thing is crystal clear to me: Israel cannot win this six-front war alone. This is the first Israeli government ever to make annexation of the West Bank a stated objective in its coalition agreement. Be advised: If Israel does invade Gaza, corporations everywhere will be facing competing demands from employees to denounce Israel or Hamas.
