The sweeping pardon means Hunter Biden won’t face any punishment for criminal convictions in two separate cases, one involving gun charges, the other tax evasion. “They took a gamble that didn’t play out as they hoped,” former Justice Department spokesman Anthony Coley said. If he follows through, Trump may try to blunt the fallout by invoking the Biden pardon. “Joe Biden's pardon of Hunter Biden proves President Trump's signature campaign promise to end the weaponization of our justice system needs to happen,” she said, adding: “President Trump has made that promise. A judge has already ruled there is no merit to the idea that Hunter Biden is a victim of selective prosecution.

Opinion | Can Rahm Emanuel Flip the Script Again?
  + stars: | 2024-12-03 | by ( Bret Stephens | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
There’s a buzz around Rahm Emanuel — the former Bill Clinton adviser, former Illinois congressman, former chief of staff to President Barack Obama, former mayor of Chicago — possibly becoming the next head of the Democratic National Committee. “What started as two wars in two theaters is now one war in two separate theaters,” he says of the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. “We need to ensure that it does not expand into a third theater.”How soon might that happen? I mention 2027, a year that’s often seen as China’s target date for reunification with Taiwan, if necessary by force. Unlike with Taipei, to which America’s obligations are deliberately ambiguous, with Manila and Seoul our defense commitments are ironclad.

Michael R. Bloomberg, the former New York City mayor, intends to launch a broadside on Tuesday against Robert F. Kennedy Jr., using his opening remarks at a public health conference to warn that installing Mr. Kennedy as health secretary would be “beyond dangerous,” and tantamount to “medical malpractice on a mass scale.”Mr. Bloomberg, in remarks prepared for delivery at the event, the two-day Bloomberg American Health Summit in Washington, called on Senate Republicans to persuade President-elect Donald J. Trump to “rethink” his choice of Mr. Kennedy for health secretary. If Mr. Trump cannot be persuaded, he said, the Senate has “a duty to our whole country, but especially to our children,” to vote against confirming him. “The casualties of Kennedy’s war on science and medicine — Kennedy’s casualties — will pile up, and the body count would be unbearably high” if Mr. Kennedy is confirmed, Mr. Bloomberg said in his prepared remarks. “We can’t allow Kennedy or Trump — or anyone else — to wage that war, which would bring unimaginable suffering to the American people.”Mr. Bloomberg has spent billions of dollars promoting public health, both through his charity, Bloomberg Philanthropies, and through donations to the School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University, which now bears his name. The school and the charity hosted the health summit, with the theme of “advancing public health in uncertain political times.”

The special counsel appointed to investigate President-elect Donald J. Trump is wrapping up his work without the charges he brought in two cases ever going in front of a jury. The special counsel named to lead the inquiry into Hunter Biden, the president’s son, has just seen the two convictions he secured wiped away by a presidential pardon. Mr. Trump, whose election victory last month has done nothing to blunt his desire for retribution against those who pursued or opposed him, is trying to install a new F.B.I. director, Kash Patel, dedicated to turning the nation’s premier law enforcement agency upside down. And President Biden, who for years cast himself as the principled defender of democratic norms and the rule of law, defended his grant of clemency to his son by saying Hunter had been “selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted” in a process infected by “raw politics.”

Giulia Cecchettin was just days away from graduating with a degree in biomedical engineering at the University of Padua, in Italy, when her disgruntled ex-boyfriend confronted her, demanding that she take him back. Her body was found a week later, wrapped in plastic bags and thrown in a ditch. On Tuesday, more than a year after Ms. Cecchettin’s killing, her former boyfriend, Filippo Turetta, was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison, concluding a case that has outraged people across Italy, where chauvinistic attitudes remain deeply rooted at all levels of society. In the first 11 months of this year, 101 women were killed in Italy, more than half by their current or former partners, according to Italy’s Interior Ministry. But Ms. Cecchettin’s story has stood out, striking a particularly deep chord across the country.

CNN —There’ll be a strong sense of déjà vu when French President Emmanuel Macron lays the flattery on thick for Donald Trump in Paris this weekend. The president seeks to highlight US commitment to sub-Saharan Africa in the face of China’s investment-led regional power play. Morton I. Abramowitz, a longtime U.S. diplomat who made refugee and humanitarian concerns a focal point of American foreign policy during his tenure, died on Friday at his home in Washington. His son, Michael, confirmed the death. Blessed with an impatient implacability rarely found among diplomats, Mr. Abramowitz repeatedly broke with the foreign policy establishment, both as a career Foreign Service officer and later as the president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. His first chance to assert himself came in 1978, when President Jimmy Carter named him ambassador to Thailand. It was a fraught moment in Southeast Asia: The region was still coping with the fallout from the Vietnam War, while the genocide in Cambodia — and that country’s invasion by Vietnam in 1978 — sent some one million refugees fleeing to the Thai border.

Stock market trading has been acutely sensitive to economic data in the post-Covid era, with the averages moving sharply on upside and downside surprises. The first test if that holds true: Friday's nonfarm payrolls report for November that Bank of America recommends market participants "tread carefully" when assessing due to noisy data. "The market has never been this reactive to macro data as it has post-COVID. Like the October report, BofA expects the payrolls release to be noisy because of impacts from storms in the Southeast and a Boeing strike. The firm sees an above-consensus 240,000 jobs created, with 100,000 built in from the reversal of the storm and strike impacts.

RFK Jr. initially ran for president in 2024 as a Democrat, but switched to an independent bid and later dropped out to endorse Trump. Bloomberg in Tuesday's speech appealed directly to U.S. senators not to confirm RFK Jr. to the Cabinet role in the next Trump administration. CNN —Defense lawyers for President-elect Donald Trump are using President Joe Biden’s pardon of his son Hunter to argue that Trump’s conviction in his Manhattan hush money case should be dismissed. “Yesterday in issuing a 10 year pardon to Hunter Biden that covers any and all crimes whether charged or uncharged, President Biden asserted that his son was ‘selectively, and unfairly prosecuted’ and ‘treated differently,’” Trump lawyers wrote in a motion filed Monday. Trump’s lawyers also want the conviction dismissed, but the DA’s office says it will oppose any effort to toss the case. In addition to the pardon argument, Trump’s attorneys also told the judge that his case should be dismissed given his reelection last month. “Even (Smith) has been forced to concede, by DOJ’s Office of Legal Counsel (‘OLC’ ), that President Trump’s status as President-elect mandates dismissal of the unjust prosecutions pending against him,” they wrote.
