April 11 (Reuters) - Australian consumer finance firm Latitude Group Holdings Ltd (LFS.AX) will not pay a ransom to those behind a cyber attack last month, saying it will be detrimental to customers and cause harm to the broader community by encouraging further attacks. "We will not reward criminal behaviour, nor do we believe that paying a ransom will result in the return or destruction of the information that was stolen," Latitude said in a statement on Tuesday. Latitude, which provides consumer finance services to retailers Harvey Norman (HVN.AX) and JB Hi-Fi (JBH.AX), had also taken its platforms offline. Several Australian firms have reported cyber attacks over the past few months, which experts attribute to an understaffed cyber security industry. FRANKFURT, Feb 15 (Reuters) - German solar firm sonnen said on Wednesday it has successfully stored excess grid power in electric car batteries owned by its customers to help stabilise power networks operated by Dutch company TenneT (IPO-TTH.AS), and will expand the business model. Sonnen supplies owners of photovoltaic (PV) installations for generating electricity from rooftop solar panels with storage batteries, to release power to the home when needed and to reduce purchases from the national grid. It introduced a digital "community" for buyers of its residential batteries in 2015 who share home batteries which were aggregated into a virtual power plant (VPP) in 2019. The project with TenneT, which operates 14,000 kms(8,699 miles) of high-voltage grids in Germany, extends to EV batteries as another storage medium, sonnen said in a statement. "Integrating electric cars into the power grid is an important milestone towards responding to the challenges of future power availability," said TenneT chief operation officer Tim Meyerjuergens.

In an interview with Time, Mira Murati, OpenAI's chief technology officer, said the company welcomed input, including from regulators and governments. "The whole value proposition of these types of AI systems is that they can generate content at scales and speeds that humans simply can't," he said.

New York City Delays Enforcement of AI Bias Law

New York City is delaying the enforcement of a law requiring bias audits of artificial intelligence systems used in hiring, following questions from industry over the specifics of how in practice the groundbreaking legislation would apply. The move comes after an outpouring of concern among businesses, AI vendors and professional firms about how exactly they could comply with the city’s law. Detractors have expressed concern that the use of AI tools could inadvertently apply prejudices at scale to the recruitment process. Proponents, though, have argued that AI systems used in hiring could ultimately be fairer and more transparent than human resources staff, who can bring their own biases to the job. The scrutiny of AI tools is good, but should be balanced, said Emily Dickens, head of government affairs for the Society for Human Resource Management.
Dec 8 (Reuters) - Australia's Bigtincan Holdings Ltd (BTH.AX) said on Thursday top shareholder and suitor SQN Investors (SQN) had expressed its disagreement over a potential capital raising, calling it "highly dilutive" and "value-destructive". Last week, the software provider received a buyout bid from private equity adviser SQN, valuing it at A$441.9 million ($296.74 million). "We would urge you to instead honour your fiduciary obligations and engage with the various parties that have approached you about a control transaction, including SQN Investors." SQN, which holds a 13.6% stake in Bigtincan, also expressed concerns the potential capital raise "would imply a reliance on further acquisitions" to achieve fiscal 2023 annualised recurring revenue guidance of between A$137 million and A$143 million. In its response to the letter, Bigtincan confirmed its guidance and said it would make an announcement once the placement was completed.
SYDNEY, Nov 30 (Reuters) - Australia's parliament on Wednesday voted to censure former Liberal prime minister Scott Morrison after an inquiry found his secret appointment to multiple ministries during the COVID-19 pandemic undermined trust in government. Morrison, who lost power in a general election in May, secretly accumulated five ministerial roles during the pandemic: health, finance, treasury, resources and home affairs. It marks the first time a former prime minister has been censured by parliament, though the motion is symbolic in nature. "The fact is, that our democracy is precious," Labor Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said during the debate, speaking in favour of censuring Morrison. Morrison said he had only used the powers on one occasion, to block BPH Energy's (BPH.AX) PEP-11 gas exploration project.
Nov 14 (Reuters) - Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ.AX) on Monday said it would contribute A$42 million ($28.10 million) to settle a class action lawsuit brought by law firm Slater & Gordon (SGH.AX) in 2020 over the sale of three consumer credit insurance products. The class action was filed against ANZ, QBE Insurance Australia (QBE.AX), OnePath Life, and OnePath General Insurance alleging that the entities made customers believe their policy payments were "compulsory or provided value to them", according to the law firm's website. ANZ said the settlement contribution is covered by a provision held as of Sept. 30. QBE Insurance, and OnePath Life and OnePath General Insurance, which are indirectly held by Swiss firm Zurich Insurance Group (ZURN.S), did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Nov 14 (Reuters) - Three of Australia's 'big four' banks settled separate class action lawsuits for A$126 million ($84.51 million) with Slater & Gordon (SGH.AX), who took the banks to court two years ago over sale of credit insurance products, the companies said on Monday. Law firm Slater & Gordon in 2020 filed class action lawsuits against Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA.AX), Westpac Banking Corp (WBC.AX), and Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ.AX) on behalf of around one million customers. ANZ, along with QBE Insurance, and OnePath Life and OnePath General Insurance, indirect units of Swiss firm Zurich Insurance Group (ZURN.S), will pay a total of A$47 million to their customers under the settlement, with ANZ contributing A$42 million, Slater & Gordon said. Nov 7 (Reuters) - Australian casino operator Star Entertainment Group Ltd (SGR.AX) on Monday said it faces a second class action lawsuit over allegations of failure to comply with disclosure requirements regarding anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing rules. The class action, filed by law firm Maurice Blackburn, alleges that between March 29, 2016 and March 16, 2022, Star made misleading representations about its systems and processes for compliance with anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing obligations, Star said in a statement. The lawsuit also accuses Star of failing to disclose relevant information to the market and "conducted its affairs contrary to the interests of the members of The Star as a whole", according to the statement. Star said it will defend itself against the class action, adding that the claim was "substantially similar" to the class action filed by another law firm Slater & Gordon (SGH.AX) in March earlier this year.
