New York CNN —Starbucks is hoping to attract customers with a little gift: a free reusable straw. The giveaway is part of Starbucks’ broader efforts to become more sustainable and hopefully generate sales. Starbucks said that the reusable straws are “compatible with the Starbucks cold cup lid and most reusable Starbucks cold cups.” Its locations phased out plastic, disposable straws in 2020 and offer biodegradable straws with “sippy cup” lids in their place. Starbucks doesn’t often offer giveaways, other than its yearly handout of free plastic red cups during the holiday season. The chain also is rolling out new cold cups that use up to 20% less plastic compared to the current version.

Shares of Dutch food delivery marketplace Just Eat Takeaway.com could more than double over the next 12 months, according to Jefferies analysts. Jefferies remains bullish on Just Eat, even as the company's U.S. business Grubhub has faced the pressures of government price controls imposed on restaurants since the Covid-19 pandemic. Just Eat expects a $100 million EBITDA impact from the amending of the fee caps, the Jefferies note reported. Shares of the delivery firm have also moved away from their high during the Covid pandemic, and are now down 18.1% year-to-date and 22.5% in the last 12 months. It also trades as an American Depository Receipt in the U.S. — CNBC's Michael Bloom contributed to this report.

That's the question I've been asking myself every June since Amazon Prime first hooked me more than 10 years ago with a deeply discounted rate for college students. Let's audit the Prime perks that I do — and don't — use, and see if it's worth keeping around for another year. But the convenience of being able to find most products I'm shopping for and receive them in a timely manner is still a huge value for me. Smith Collection/gado | Archive Photos | Getty ImagesOn paper, there's value that I'm leaving on the table with my Prime membership. The newly added Grubhub+ membership is nice to have, but spending more money on take-out because of Amazon Prime will only make my membership feel more expensive, not less.

Starbucks teams up with Grubhub on delivery

New York CNN —Starbucks is teaming up with Grubhub as it tries to boost sales after a challenging quarter. By August, Starbucks items should be available on Grubhub throughout the country, the company said. Prior to the Grubhub partnership, customers could already order Starbucks items via DoorDash and Uber Eats. Since the pandemic, more consumers have been getting their cafe and restaurant orders to-go, via delivery or pickup. In addition to broadening access to delivery, Starbucks is taking other steps to try to jumpstart sales, like updating its app, offering new menu items and testing staying open overnight.

New York City delivery workers who don't use cars have one of the deadliest jobs in the city. There are now more than 65,000 app-based restaurant delivery workers in the city, and about 80% of them use e-bikes and motorbikes. The city report found that 28.7% of e-bike or moped delivery workers experienced injuries that forced them to miss work, lose consciousness, or seek medical care. They're asking for wider protected bike lanes, or even separate lanes for e-bikes and mopeds, and charging facilities for e-bikes. Indeed, "New Yorkers are dependent on app delivery workers to keep them safe and fed during times of crisis," she added.

If you're an Amazon Prime subscriber, food delivery just got a little bit cheaper. The e-tail giant last week announced a new addition to the list of perks that come with its $139 annual membership. In addition to free two-day shipping and access to the Prime Video catalog, subscribers now get free access to Grubhub+. It includes a number of benefits, including lower service fees, 5% credit on pickup orders and $0 delivery fees on orders over $12. Both Prime and non-Prime members will also be able to place Grubhub orders directly on the Amazon app.
One screenshot from a Lyft driver based in Arizona showed a $2.62 ride that took 15 minutes and traveled 4.32 miles. For some drivers, these sub-$3 trips are a symbol of their broader frustrations with their pay. AdvertisementCompared to January 2023, sub-$3 trips — excluding tips — have become more common for DoorDash, Grubhub, and Uber Eats drivers and less common for Uber and Lyft drivers, per Gridwise. Otherwise, the pay would likely increase if drivers rejected these rides since drivers would be more likely to accept a higher-paying ride. Amazon is offering Prime members free Grubhub subscriptions in its latest effort to sweeten the perks of the $139-a-year loyalty program. The e-commerce giant previously gave Prime members a yearlong subscription to Grubhub, which includes free delivery on orders over $12. As part of the move, people without Prime can also place Grubhub orders directly through Amazon's website and mobile app. It launched Amazon Restaurants in 2015, allowing Prime members to order meals from local restaurants, which were then delivered by its fleet of drivers. The company shuttered Amazon Restaurants four years later to focus on grocery delivery.

Elijah Orlandi knows what many New Yorkers think about delivery workers on e-bikes: They ride too fast. They zigzag in and out of traffic and bike lanes — sometimes going the wrong direction altogether. He has seen e-bike riders “swerving in between cars and all that kind of stuff.”But Orlandi is also hoping for compassion. Delivery apps, he noted, keep track of how quickly workers make their drop-offs — and ding them if they take too long. “Sometimes you’ll be going somewhere and Grubhub will send you another order, and then no matter what you do, you’re going to be late,” he said.

Advertisement"Pay for gig drivers rarely exceeds the employee-equivalent local minimum wage," the authors wrote. While two-thirds of DoorDash drivers and just under half of Uber Eats drivers had their incomes adjusted, just 5% of Uber drivers did. The average Lyft, Uber Eats, and DoorDash driver had hourly earnings of $24, $18, and $14, respectively. Over the past year, several gig drivers have told BI that their gigs are less profitable than they used to be. For example, Uber and Lyft drivers have said the ride-hailing giants are taking a larger cut of rider fares.

Read previewSince January, gig delivery workers in Seattle have been reaping the benefits of a local law mandating a certain pay level. Under the proposal, gig workers would be paid an hourly rate of $19.97 for their time spent retrieving and delivering orders. Instead, gig workers would get paid 35 cents per mile — down from the current 74 cents. In emails and calls to action sent to gig workers, DoorDash, Instacart, Uber, and others have claimed that there are fewer orders for gig workers to claim. The rapid rise and fall of ghost kitchens
  + stars: | 2024-04-14 | by ( Kenneth Niemeyer | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +4 min
Ghost kitchens are restaurants with no storefront and no seating that customers never see and which only do delivery. Several influencers and celebrities have used ghost kitchens to produce their own lines of food, like YouTuber Jimmy Donaldson, known online as Mr. AdvertisementAnd as quality issues and late delivery times worsen, some ghost kitchens are starting to see legal challenges. Cracker Barrel also opened its own virtual restaurant using CloudKitchens, another ghost kitchen group, according to Restaurant Business. The company owns three virtual brands, Banda Burrito, The Meltdown, and Burger Den.

Instacart, DoorDash, and other apps seem to be trying to roll back Seattle's new gig worker pay law. They say Seattle gig workers are making less and delivering fewer orders after many raised prices. But in the preamble to the survey, Instacart indicated it already had thoughts about how things were going. One poster, who included screenshots of the message, encouraged other Instacart shoppers to turn the pre-written letter to the city council around. Uber Eats and Grubhub have also put out statements saying that things have gotten worse for their gig workers since Seattle's law took effect.

Some restaurants are connecting callers to an AI voice service to place DoorDash and Uber Eats orders. Many people now place delivery orders online, but Kea's founder says restaurants sometimes struggle to handle phone orders. AdvertisementA new voice AI service means diners can place delivery orders with services like DoorDash and Uber Eats via phone call. The AI guides them through the transactions, including suggesting add-ons and recommending items they got in previous orders, Ahmad said. The delivery platforms that Kea can refer orders to are DoorDash, Uber Eats, Postmates, Grubhub, and Favor, Ahmad said.

New York CNN —Lyft and Uber will stop offering services in Minneapolis on May 1 after the city council overrode the mayor’s veto of a minimum wage for rideshare drivers. The city council on Thursday voted 10-3 in favor of the override, allowing rideshare drivers to be paid the local minimum wage of $15.57 an hour. “Everyone wants to see Uber and Lyft drivers get paid more. However, the analysis Frey referred to showed lower numbers — $0.89 per mile and $0.49 per minute — to make minimum wage. AdvertisementSome gig work services are offering a perk usually associated with traditional jobs: retirement savings accounts with matching contributions. Alexandrea Ravenelle, an assistant professor in sociology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, told BI she would like to see gig workers classified as employees of the platforms, not independent workers. Ravenelle said a better plan would be for companies to extend similar types of retirement benefits to gig workers as employees of those companies enjoy. The Robinhood program also offers gig workers on these platforms access to free financial counseling through GreenPath Financial Wellness, a nonprofit. AdvertisementFlexibility can be an illusionMost single parents with whom BI spoke said they valued the flexibility gig work gives them. Some single parents with disabilities said being able to take days off has helped them stay healthier and avoid burnout. This means that a higher percentage of single parents' earnings goes toward childcare costs, pushing some away from using childcare entirely. "These fluctuations and discrepancies can be devastating to individuals who don't have other mechanisms to make money, including single parents who are often operating on a single income," Greening said.
