Getting into the governor’s race, top Harris advisers believe, would require making her intentions clear at the latest by the summer of 2025. “Running for governor would be a step down, and it would interfere with her ability to run for president again,” the person said. In happier times, the room had been used for receiving dignitaries who visited the Duke's mother, Luisa Isabel Álvarez de Toledo. Celebrated as the "Red Duchess," Luisa Isabel was a socialist-minded, fascism-battling aristocrat beloved by ordinary Spaniards. In 1955, only 18 years old and already pregnant with Leoncio, Luisa Isabel married José Leoncio González de Gregorio, a nobleman from Soria. After giving birth to Gabriel, family lore has it that she handed him to the nurses and declared she had fulfilled her role as a woman. Democrats ended up cleaning up in the Clinton districts and then padding their majority in the Trump districts in 2018. A majority of the Trump/House Democratic districts have a median household income of less than $65,000, which is also below the national median of $78,000. For Republicans, Trump has shifted their coalition to include more working-class voters and voters of color. The targets include some Trump seats that were not on this year’s battlefield, like Michigan’s 4th District, represented by GOP Rep. Bill Huizenga. Republicans, meanwhile, will try to ensure that Trump voters become reliable GOP voters, and some Republicans acknowledged those voters are not in their camp yet.

Mikheil Kavelashvili reacts after he was elected the country's new president in the parliament, in Tbilisi, Georgia, on Dec. 14, 2024. Georgian lawmakers elected Mikheil Kavelashvili, a hardline critic of the West, as the country's new president on Saturday, setting him up to replace a pro-Western incumbent amid major protests against the government over a halt to the country's European Union accession talks last month. All opposition parties have boycotted parliament since an October election in which official results gave the ruling Georgian Dream party almost 54% of the vote, but which the opposition say was fraudulent. Outgoing President Salome Zourabichvili, a pro-EU critic of the ruling Georgian Dream party, has positioned herself as a leader of the protest movement and has said she will remain president after her term ends. Opposition parties have said they will continue to regard Zourabichvili as the legitimate president, even after Kavelashvili is inaugurated on Dec. 29.

CNN —The commander of Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk group of forces has been replaced following Russian advances in the region, a military official said Saturday. The move comes after Lutsenko faced heavy criticism for failing to stop recent Russian advances on the key city of Pokrovsk. Russian forces have been spotted just three kilometers (1.9 miles) from the city, according to Ukrainian mapping service DeepState. Its fall to Russian forces would mark the largest setback for Ukraine in months and compound Ukraine’s struggles to get off the backfoot while Russian troops pile severe pressure on the eastern front lines. He added that Ukraine had information that North Korean soldiers may be being used along other parts of the front line.

But BlackRock's Rick Rieder says there are still fixed-income investments trading at a premium to benchmark rates. It's getting harder for investors to find the kind of robust yields on cash equivalents they could collect earlier this year. High-yield bonds are viewed as riskier assets but offer better returns. AdvertisementBecause the euro is stronger than the dollar, the effective yield that European bonds offer is higher when they're converted back to US dollars. Rieder said the fund achieves this return in part by bundling high-yield (and therefore higher-risk) bonds with investment-grade bonds.

WASHINGTON — A group of House Republicans representing high-tax states is demanding an increase to the federal deduction for state and local taxes, also known as “SALT,” in order to support an extension of President-elect Donald Trump's tax law next year. The battle centers on the $10,000 limit on deductions for state and local taxes, which Republicans established in a 2017 tax cut bill. You guys can do the math on that one,” Rep. Nick LaLota, R-N.Y., a proponent of a bigger SALT deduction, told NBC News. Because an expiration of [the 2017 tax law] would completely eliminate [the cap on] SALT,” Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., a member of the tax-writing Ways & Means Committee, said in an interview. “I think it would be fiscally irresponsible not to have a SALT cap,” said Tillis, who represents a state where taxpayers don’t use the deduction as much.
