The central bank's quest for a "soft landing" of more slowly rising prices and continued economic growth looks increasingly probable. In fact, the U.S. may hit a sweet spot just as the 2024 presidential election campaign crescendos next year. Rather than cheering, though, after years of economic turbulence since the coronavirus pandemic erupted in 2020, Americans grumble, at least if you ask them about the economy. With fast rising prices and the end of an array of pandemic-era government benefit programs, inflation-adjusted household income fell last year, and the poverty rate increased. A Biden adviser said the White House understands that the economy and inflation are a critical issue, and the campaign has a big media push planned on "Bidenomics."

McDonald's franchisees who add new restaurants will soon have to pay higher royalty fees. It's the first time in nearly three decades that McDonald's is hiking its royalty fees. However, the higher rate will affect new franchisees, buyers of company-owned restaurants, relocated restaurants and other scenarios that involve the franchisor. McDonald's will also stop calling the payments "service fees," and instead use the term "royalty fees," which most franchisors favor. They pay rent, monthly royalty fees and other charges, such as annual fees toward the company's mobile app, in order to operate as part of McDonald's system.

There are reasons to be bullish on McDonald's in the second half of this year, Wells Fargo said. Fadem said the company's "innovation engine is firing on all cylinders," while international markets are performing better than expected. McDonald's shares have sold off more than the broader market since its second-quarter earnings report in late July. And accelerated unit growth is just one way McDonald's can growth its earnings per share in the 2024 fiscal year, Fadem said. The stock has underperformed the broader market this year, up about 4.5% year to date.

The 20-year-old top seed from Spain was leading 6-2, 3-2 when Koepfer retired, having rolled his ankle at a grimace-inducing angle minutes into the match. A commotion sounded at the entrance of the building, and a shout went up. Soldiers carried in two men on stretchers, one his lined face taut in a grimace, a third, with bloodstained pants, following behind. Within seconds the men were lifted onto operating tables and medics swarmed in, cutting off bloody clothes, hooking up drips, talking to the men in low voices. “Brother, you will make it,” the third soldier, Batya, called out to his friend with a chest wound. “Hold on, we have more to do.”Wounded just 40 minutes earlier on Ukraine’s southern front in the Zaporizhzhia region, the soldiers from the 110th Brigade had arrived at a stabilization point, one of a dozen medical stations set up by the Ukrainian Army within a few miles of the front line to ensure critical, lifesaving care.

McDonald's customers are "trading down" to its value items and buying less, execs told investors. Some diners also appear to be switching to McDonald's from full-service restaurants, CEO Chris Kempczinski said. Customers are "trading down" from premium and higher-priced items to core and value items instead, CFO Ian Borden told investors on Thursday, without giving specific examples. Kempczinski told investors in April that fewer customers were ordering fries with their burgers as they cut back on spending. Some households on incomes under $100,000 also appear to be switching to McDonald's from full-service restaurants, Kempczinski said Thursday.

July 27 (Reuters) - McDonald's (MCD.N) beat market expectations for quarterly comparable sales on Thursday, as the restaurant chain's relatively cheaper burgers and fries attracted cost-conscious diners in an inflationary environment. While U.S. restaurant chains including McDonald's have had to raise prices to offset a hit to profit from higher costs, the company has still managed to keep its prices lower than its competitors. Those moves, coupled with improved staffing levels at its chains, have helped McDonald's gain market share from its peers. In contrast, overall traffic at fast-food and quick-service chains climbed just 1.2% in the same period. Easing costs of key ingredients including chicken, cheese and pork have also helped McDonald's, whose total restaurant margins in the United States climbed 12% in the quarter.

McDonald's is creating a spinoff restaurant chain called CosMc's, executives said Thursday. "CosMc's is a small format concept with all the DNA of McDonald's, but with its own unique personality," McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski said. The name for the new brand comes from CosMc, a McDonaldland mascot who appeared in advertisements in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The brand will revive CosMc after the return of another McDonald's mascot, Grimace, jolted its U.S. business. "This quarter, if I'm being honest, the theme was Grimace," Kempczinski said.

The social media success of McDonald's Grimace-themed birthday meal could be good news for the fast food chain's earnings and share price, according to Truist. Analyst Jake Bartlett raised his price target on McDonald's, which he rates a buy, to $335 from $327 previously. A highlight of the meal for customers — and a centerpiece of a social media craze — was a purple-colored, berry-flavored milkshake. To be sure, Bartlett said Truist data shows multiple other chains talso beating expectations for sales in the latest quarter amid surging demand. Of eight chains, data shows just two — Wendy's and Chipotle — could see slight misses on sales forecasts, he wrote.
