Given a second chance to resuscitate his young career, Bryce Young produced something equally as rare during Week 9 of the NFL season — a victory for the Carolina Panthers. 1 overall pick of the 2023 NFL draft, who was benched earlier this season after just 18 career starts, led Carolina on a game-winning drive to beat New Orleans 23-22. After the Panthers took over with 3:26 left in the fourth quarter trailing 22-17, Young threw a pair of incompletions before he found Xavier Legette for 26 yards. On the next play, Young threw the ball high downfield, inducing a pass interference penalty that moved the ball 16 yards from the end zone. Less common is the benched starter who returns to earn full favor within an organization that had lost enough confidence to initially sit him.

Few college football programs have won more consistently than Ohio State under Ryan Day or Penn State under James Franklin. And yet when the third-ranked Nittany Lions (7-0) and the fourth-ranked Buckeyes (6-1) meet Saturday, a single question looms over both coaches. In the process, a win would move Penn State closer to securing what would be the first appearance in the College Football Playoff in Franklin’s decade in charge. Would the playoff selection committee select a two-loss Ohio State team? It’s a debate that would be opened should it lose to Penn State for the first time since 2016.

Yet this season he is on pace to produce marks in passer rating, air yards per attempt, yards per passing attempt, quarterback rating, passing yards and interceptions that are better than in either of his previous MVP campaigns, in 2019 and 2023. Since an 0-2 start Baltimore has had the best month of any team in the NFL. On Monday, they face a Tampa Bay team that has shown last season’s playoff berth was no fluke. Baltimore’s 35.5 points per game over its last three games is third-best in the NFL behind only Detroit and, yes, Tampa Bay (38.0). New York Jets offensive lineman Xavier Newman was carted off the field in Pittsburgh after what appeared to be a serious injury Sunday against the Steelers. The team said Newman would miss the rest of the game with a neck injury. Newman was hurt in the third quarter when Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers was intercepted by Pittsburgh’s Beanie Bishop Jr., who returned 41 yards. When he remained down, Jets teammates surrounded him out of bounds for several minutes. The "Sunday Night Football" broadcast reported that Newman was conscious and had movement in his limbs as he was strapped to a spine board before he was carted off and taken to a hospital in Pittsburgh.

Since these teams first met 66 years ago, Ohio State won the first nine matchups, but Oregon has claimed the last two. In previous eras, Saturday would have effectively served as a knockout game for the loser’s chances of advancing to the College Football Playoff. But Saturday’s back-and-forth result was an example of why the expansion of the playoff this year — to 12 teams — could endure as a good thing.

Five weeks into his career, Williams played his best and most complete game in Sunday’s 36-10 win against Carolina. The Panthers are a lowly 1-4, and their defense remains one of the worst against the pass in the NFL. Tennessee Titans starting quarterback Will Levis did not come out for his team’s third drive Monday, at Miami, after an apparent injury to his throwing shoulder. Levis appeared to be hurt after diving for yardage on a scramble during Tennessee’s second drive. Tyler Huntley earned his 10th career start in place of Tua Tagovailoa, who has been sidelined for a head injury. Huntley committed a turnover when his backward pass was dropped, leading to a fumble recovered by the Titans. Rudolph has led his team to a pair of field goals and the Titans are up 6-3.

☆ Colts QB Anthony Richardson is out with a hip injury

Indianapolis quarterback Anthony Richardson was ruled out for the rest of Sunday’s game against Pittsburgh after appearing to injure his hip in the first quarter. After being hit near the right hip on a 14-yard scramble downfield with 5:42 to play in the first quarter, Richardson, the second-year starter, immediately was seen reaching for the area. But on his first play back, Richardson struggled to run to his left on first-and-goal just 6 yards from the end zone and immediately left the game again, with Joe Flacco entering as the Colts’ replacement. The team initially ruled Richardson as questionable to return, but he was soon downgraded to out for the rest of the game. Shortly after he returned, he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in October 2023 that required surgery.
