Given a second chance to resuscitate his young career, Bryce Young produced something equally as rare during Week 9 of the NFL season — a victory for the Carolina Panthers. 1 overall pick of the 2023 NFL draft, who was benched earlier this season after just 18 career starts, led Carolina on a game-winning drive to beat New Orleans 23-22. After the Panthers took over with 3:26 left in the fourth quarter trailing 22-17, Young threw a pair of incompletions before he found Xavier Legette for 26 yards. On the next play, Young threw the ball high downfield, inducing a pass interference penalty that moved the ball 16 yards from the end zone. Less common is the benched starter who returns to earn full favor within an organization that had lost enough confidence to initially sit him.

Few college football programs have won more consistently than Ohio State under Ryan Day or Penn State under James Franklin. And yet when the third-ranked Nittany Lions (7-0) and the fourth-ranked Buckeyes (6-1) meet Saturday, a single question looms over both coaches. In the process, a win would move Penn State closer to securing what would be the first appearance in the College Football Playoff in Franklin’s decade in charge. Would the playoff selection committee select a two-loss Ohio State team? It’s a debate that would be opened should it lose to Penn State for the first time since 2016.

Yet this season he is on pace to produce marks in passer rating, air yards per attempt, yards per passing attempt, quarterback rating, passing yards and interceptions that are better than in either of his previous MVP campaigns, in 2019 and 2023. Goff has been a model of efficiency, completing 74.1% of his passes while posting career bests in yards per attempt and passer rating. While other NFC contenders have struggled, Detroit looks arguably better than a season ago. By rushing for a league-leading 946 yards on 6.5 yards per carry — an incredible 1.1 yards more per rush than he averaged in that historic 2020 season — he’s taken pressure off of Jackson. That not only explains the play, but what Daniels has brought to a Commanders team that won’t go away.

High expectations follow being a high NFL draft pick. For three quarters, the matchup cut against those lofty expectations in some ways — and for the last quarter, it became an instant classic that ended with the defining play, so far, of the 2024 NFL season. By summoning offense that had been missing the first three quarters, Williams and the Chicago Bears rallied from a 12-point deficit to take a 15-12 lead against Washington with 23 seconds left on a short touchdown pass by Williams, followed by a two-point conversion. Commanders wide receiver Noah Brown hauled in the Hail Mary with no time left. Washington won 18-15 to improve to 6-2, while Chicago fell to 4-3 in one of the most improbable ways.

Welcome to the NBA, Bronny James. With the age-defying act of LeBron James now reaching a 22nd season, tying the league record for longest career with Vince Carter, James has played for so long that in June the Lakers drafted his oldest son, Bronny, 20. Though Lakers coach J.J. Redick told reporters Monday that a plan to play LeBron and Bronny together had not been finalized and Bronny James said he did not know whether he would actually play against Minnesota, there is clearly an expectation of history surrounding the season opener. “So, that’s what’s going to be cool about it.”“Only two families to do it,” Bronny James told reporters Monday when he was asked about the Griffeys. “I feel like my confidence, I feel like that’s the biggest thing for me right now,” he told reporters after the preseason finale in San Francisco.

Since an 0-2 start Baltimore has had the best month of any team in the NFL. On Monday, they face a Tampa Bay team that has shown last season’s playoff berth was no fluke. Baltimore’s 35.5 points per game over its last three games is third-best in the NFL behind only Detroit and, yes, Tampa Bay (38.0). Henry is averaging 5.4 yards per carry on the road, where quarterback Lamar Jackson is averaging 6.2 yards, too. It sets up a strength vs. strength matchup, given the Buccaneers’ defense ranks among the league leaders in stopping the run by allowing 113 rushing yards per game.

New York Jets offensive lineman Xavier Newman was carted off the field in Pittsburgh after what appeared to be a serious injury Sunday against the Steelers. The team said Newman would miss the rest of the game with a neck injury. Newman was hurt in the third quarter when Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers was intercepted by Pittsburgh’s Beanie Bishop Jr., who returned 41 yards. When he remained down, Jets teammates surrounded him out of bounds for several minutes. The "Sunday Night Football" broadcast reported that Newman was conscious and had movement in his limbs as he was strapped to a spine board before he was carted off and taken to a hospital in Pittsburgh.

It takes a lot of things to go right to lead an NFL division near the season’s midway point. Yet for half of the league’s first-place teams, things went wrong in Week 7. The Vikings’ loss also broke their undefeated start. With its win and San Francisco’s loss, Seattle jumped into first in the NFC West. The only thing yet to slow down Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels in his rookie season? The rookie left the first quarter of Washington’s game against Carolina with what the Commanders called a rib injury that left him questionable to return. Daniels was visibly frustrated, taking off his helmet and throwing it to the turf. Daniels, off to one of the best statistical starts to a career by a quarterback in NFL history, had enjoyed another sensational start prior to the injury, rushing for 46 yards on the Commanders’ first play from scrimmage. 2 pick in last year's NFL Draft, Daniels has thrown for 1,404 yards and six touchdowns with only two interceptions.

That changed in 2023, when Texas went 12-2 in coach Steve Sarkisian’s third season and appeared in the College Football Playoff for the first time. Like Texas, Georgia spent much of the last 30 years boasting a past national championship and a campus in a recruiting-rich part of the country, with little modern success to show for it. The quarterback of the Bulldogs’ back-to-back championship teams was not a former high-star recruit but he did grow up in Georgia. In the decade before Sarkisian’s hiring, Texas recruiting classes finished with an average rank of 10.8 in the country; in three recruiting classes under Sarkisian, Texas has averaged a ranking of 4.6. In the eyes of Texas fans, the Longhorns won’t qualify as fully back until they win the program’s first football national championship since 2006.

The Game: Denver (3-3) at New Orleans (2-4)The Storyline: Denver coach Sean Payton returns to New Orleans for the first time since 2022, when he stepped down after 15 seasons as the Saints’ coach, a run that included the franchise’s only Super Bowl title. Payton has downplayed the effect the emotions of the visit will have on the game itself, as has Dennis Allen, the longtime Saints assistant who succeeded Payton. New Orleans has converted 47% of its third-down opportunities, the NFL’s third-highest rate, while the Broncos rank second worst at 25%. Saints rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler completed 22 of his 40 passes against Tampa Bay with a touchdown and two interceptions Sunday in his pro debut. That could spell trouble against a New Orleans defense with 10 interceptions, second most in the league.

Christian Miller was a high school senior last April when he became one of the fastest teenagers in track and field history. Running 9.93 seconds in the 100 meters one month before his 18th birthday left Miller wondering how much faster he could go. His fifth-place finish in the 100 at June’s U.S. Olympic track and field trials emboldened his confidence that he belonged with professionals, he said. Daniels, the Commanders’ rookie sensation, threw for 269 yards with two touchdowns and no turnovers Sunday, continuing one of the most prolific starts to a career by a rookie quarterback in history. But in the present, it was Jackson, aided by running back Derrick Henry, who had enough to win one of the season’s most anticipated games, 30-23. Jackson threw for 323 yards with one touchdown and one interception, with nearly half his completions going to Zay Flowers (nine catches, 132 yards). Henry added 132 yards and two touchdowns rushing to help Baltimore improve to 4-2, with four consecutive victories. The Commanders’ defense has been one of the league’s worst, and allowing Baltimore 14 points in the second quarter and 10 more in the third pushed the Ravens’ lead to as high as 27-13 entering the fourth quarter.

And this is a matchup that could happen again, in two months, thanks to the expansion of the College Football Playoff. Ohio State had the game’s only turnover. Since these teams first met 66 years ago, Ohio State won the first nine matchups, but Oregon has claimed the last two. In previous eras, Saturday would have effectively served as a knockout game for the loser’s chances of advancing to the College Football Playoff. But Saturday’s back-and-forth result was an example of why the expansion of the playoff this year — to 12 teams — could endure as a good thing.

Three plays into the annual Red River Rivalry, Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers threw an interception. First-ranked and undefeated Texas was on its back foot against Oklahoma, the team the Longhorns were expected to beat handily. Gunnar Helm #85 of the Texas Longhorns dives for a touchdown during the second quarter against the Oklahoma Sooners at Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas on Saturday. Harder to discern is how much the Longhorns’ rout of Oklahoma revealed about the strength of Texas as a national-title contender. Life in Texas’ previous conference, the Big 12, meant that beating Oklahoma was the toughest hurdle to reaching the conference title game.

Quarterbacks Jayden Daniels versus Lamar Jackson should be pure fireworks, but it's far from the only intriguing matchup this weekend. Henry has scored in all five games this season while rushing for a league-high 572 yards. Considering down and distance, Henry has rushed for 229 yards more than expected, according to advanced NFL stats. Kirk Cousins, meanwhile, is fifth in passing yards per game despite a slow start for Atlanta’s offense. The Lions are conceding 349.0 yards per game, 11th-worst in the NFL.

At midnight, as the calendar switched to July 1 and two of the country’s richest athletic departments joined its most dominant league, college football had officially entered its super-conference era. Unbeaten but somewhat unremarkable this season, Oregon is meanwhile trying to return to the College Football Playoff for the first time in a decade. However, Ohio State versus Oregon in a game that counts not as a non-conference game, or a Rose Bowl matchup on New Year’s Day, but in the Big Ten standings? Their stated aim is to promote more matchups more often between otherwise separated blue-blood programs — games just like Oregon vs. Ohio State. The summit was a reminder that the remaking of college football hasn’t ended.

Objects thrown onto the field by fans at Dodger Stadium led to a roughly 12-minute delay Sunday during a heated playoff game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres. With San Diego leading 4-1 entering the seventh inning of Game 2 of the National League Division Series, two baseballs were thrown from the grandstands toward San Diego left fielder Jurickson Profar. After the balls were thrown near Profar, he quickly approached umpires along with San Diego’s manager, Mike Shildt, to complain. Security officers lined the field as trash was thrown toward the San Diego bullpen, near Padres outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. San Diego walked away with a series-tying 10-2 win to even the series 1-1.

In Week 5, scoring returned — and, in several cases, it happened in some of the oddest and most unexpected ways. The Jacksonville Jaguars’ Tank Bigsby was first hit 14 yards from the end zone by one Indianapolis Colts tackler and appeared to be wrapped up by another at the 11. Yet, with two teammates pushing him forward, he wound up with a touchdown instead of a short gain, a score that became part of Jacksonville’s first victory. Two minutes before halftime, Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love dropped back into his end zone and was shoved with two hands — but not sacked for a safety — by a chasing Rams defender. Officially, he went 101 yards, 18 yards longer than Seattle’s previous franchise record for a fumble return.

Week 5 of the NFL season is here and we have a full slate of intriguing storylines to follow, led by a pair of players facing former teams. While Rodgers has the accolades, Minnesota's Sam Darnold has been the better quarterback so far this season. Indianapolis quarterback Anthony Richardson was ruled out for the rest of Sunday’s game against Pittsburgh after appearing to injure his hip in the first quarter. After being hit near the right hip on a 14-yard scramble downfield with 5:42 to play in the first quarter, Richardson, the second-year starter, immediately was seen reaching for the area. But on his first play back, Richardson struggled to run to his left on first-and-goal just 6 yards from the end zone and immediately left the game again, with Joe Flacco entering as the Colts’ replacement. The team initially ruled Richardson as questionable to return, but he was soon downgraded to out for the rest of the game. Shortly after he returned, he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in October 2023 that required surgery.

2 Georgia to fourth-ranked Alabama might have acted as a de facto knockout game. The College Football Playoff’s expansion to 12 teams this season has left more margin for error for teams with national title ambitions that play in the sport’s four most powerful conferences. But that doesn’t mean the stakes are necessarily lower for Saturday’s meeting of undefeated Southeastern Conference rivals (7:30 p.m. But Georgia also has imperfections, such as its 74th-ranked third-down conversion rate, its 81st-ranked third-down defense and its numerous penalties.
