Folarin Balogun recently committed to representing the United States men’s national team (USMNT), ending years of speculation about whether the 21-year-old would choose to play for the US or England on the international stage. Here’s all you need to know about the prodigious striker ahead of his potential USMNT debut against Mexico. Stu Forster/Getty ImagesOn the pitch, Balogun has refined his game over the past two seasons. After the Arsenal man’s haul last season, Barker also believes this could be just the beginning for the striker. “I’m not sure he will be an elite, world class player,” Barker said, “but you certainly wouldn’t bet against him.”

NEW YORK, June 1 (Reuters) - United States' Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic will spearhead their CONCACAF Nations League title defence when the Final Four kick off on June 15 in Las Vegas, with U.S. Soccer naming their training camp squad on Thursday. The U.S. beat Mexico in extra time two years ago to clinch the title and will have a rematch with their rivals in the semi-finals. Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun, who gave U.S. Soccer a boost last month when he opted to represent the United States instead of England, has earned his first call-up. The training camp starts on June 4, just days after Anthony Hudson stepped down as interim manager of the U.S. team, with assistant B.J. Reyna was named in the training squad on Thursday.

U.S. Soccer was embroiled in turmoil after returning from the World Cup in Qatar when a bitter dispute broke out between former coach Gregg Berhalter, U.S. midfielder Reyna and his parents. That prompted an investigation by U.S. Soccer, which said last week that the incident would not prevent the body from rehiring Berhalter. Interim head coach Anthony Hudson named Reyna to the 24-man squad as the Americans seek to reach the CONCACAF Nations League Final Four. "What's happened with Gio in the past is in the past and what happened at the World Cup happened at the World Cup and we moved on from that as players," Ream told reporters on Tuesday. Hudson said in remarks provided by U.S. Soccer last week that Reyna was "a part of our program".
Gregg Berhalter was coach of the U.S. men’s team during the 2022 World Cup. An independent investigation commissioned by U.S. Soccer has found that the family of star men’s national team member Gio Reyna tried to dissuade the federation from renewing U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter in the job. The report, published Monday, examines the bizarre fallout from Berhalter’s decision to bench Gio Reyna, one of the team’s up and coming talents, at the 2022 World Cup. Reyna’s parents—the former U.S. men’s captain Claudio Reyna and former women’s national team player Danielle Egan—were upset about Gio’s lack of playing time in Qatar and resented Berhalter’s revelation after the tournament that the problem had been Gio’s attitude.
Jan 26 (Reuters) - U.S. Soccer sporting director Earnie Stewart and men's team general manager Brian McBride have decided to vacate their positions amid an ongoing shakeup at the organization, the federation said on Thursday. The federation said it was seeking a new sporting director, who will be charged with hiring the men's team's next head coach after Gregg Berhalter's contract expired at the end of last year. Anthony Hudson will serve as the men's coach until a permanent head coach is named, and U.S. Soccer said it has hired Sportsology Group to lead the search for the next sporting director. It has been embroiled in turmoil since returning from Qatar amid a bitter dispute between Berhalter, U.S. midfielder Gio Reyna and his parents. He has said he hopes to be rehired as the team's head coach and U.S. Soccer president Cindy Parlow Cone has said he is a candidate.
The biggest surprise of the U.S. men’s national team’s campaign at the World Cup last November came a couple of hours before any American kicked a ball in the tournament. Coach Gregg Berhalter had published his first starting lineup in Qatar and one name wasn’t on it: Gio Reyna. Reyna was one of the most talented players at Berhalter’s disposal and already established with a major European club at Borussia Dortmund. So after he missed the Americans’ first World Cup match in eight years, a 1-1 draw with Wales, much of the conversation revolved around him. “I’m good to go.”
"And I think when you ask around the world now about our team, the world sees us in a complete different light. Gio Reyna, 20, later confirmed in an Instagram post that Berhalter was talking about him. read moreGio is the son of Claudio Reyna, who played alongside Berhalter for the U.S. team at the 2002 World Cup and is now sporting director for MLS side Austin FC. "And it's a loving relationship, a devoted relationship and we have four amazing kids to show for it." Berhalter led the squad to the round of 16 of the World Cup in Qatar where they were knocked out by the Netherlands.
Gregg Berhalter had just returned from coaching the U.S. men’s national team in the World Cup last month, when he appeared at a conference in New York to talk about leadership lessons. Told that whatever he said would remain in the room, Berhalter spoke candidly about his team’s campaign. What he never expected was for his thinly veiled comments about Gio Reyna, the young American star he chose to bench due to poor attitude in practice, to turn into the strangest scandal in the recent history of the U.S. men’s national team.
A 31-year-old abuse allegation against U.S. men’s national team coach Gregg Berhalter was made by Danielle Reyna, the mother of U.S. men’s soccer star Gio Reyna, after she and Gio’s father, Claudio, took issue with Berhalter’s public description of benching their son during the Qatar World Cup. Claudio and Danielle Reyna confirmed in separate statements on Wednesday that they had brought the allegation to the attention of U.S. Soccer, the sport’s national governing body. The allegations represent a confrontation between two families that had been friends for decades, dating back to the days when three of them were students at the University of North Carolina. News of the Reynas’ involvement was first reported by ESPN.
Jan 4 (Reuters) - Danielle Reyna, the mother of U.S. men's national team midfielder Gio Reyna, notified U.S. Soccer last month about a 1991 incident where head coach Gregg Berhalter kicked his wife, ESPN and other outlets reported on Wednesday. Gio Reyna, 20, later confirmed in an Instagram post that Berhalter was talking about him. Danielle is the wife of former national team captain Claudio, who is the sporting director for Austin FC. Danielle, Claudio and Gio Reyna did not respond to requests for comment. But the federation on Wednesday announced that current assistant coach Anthony Hudson would lead the team during its January camp while a "technical review" of the men's national team program was conducted.
The Netherlands knocked the USMNT out of the Qatar World Cup on Saturday. They made history Thursday as the first all-female refereeing crew for a men's World Cup match. Frappert became the first woman to referee a men's World Cup match. It was Morocco's first World Cup win since 1998 — and its third-ever at the tournament. Qatar is the first Islamic country to host a World Cup.
Needing a win over Iran to advance, Gregg Berhalter's side delivered, surviving nervous moments at the end to earn the first victory of their campaign. Pulisic, Adams, Weston McKennie, Yunus Musah, Tim Weah and Sergino Dest were among 19 players making their World Cup debuts. The previous record for the U.S. team stood at 16, set in the 1990 tournament when they bowed out in the group stage. The quality of the squad combined with their progress during the tournament sparked discussions about the next American golden generation. Berhalter was reluctant to place that burden on his players but this time it does not feel like promotional bluster.
The Striking Problem That Doomed America at the World Cup

U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter and Christian Pulisic walk off the pitch after the 3-1 loss to the Netherlands. AL RAYYAN, Qatar—The clearest sign that the U.S. would be returning home from the World Cup after the Round of 16 came just three minutes into its clash with the Netherlands. Christian Pulisic had the ball in the middle of the box, with only the Dutch goalkeeper between him and a 1-0 lead. Pulisic’s shot was saved without much difficulty. If the best U.S. goal scorer couldn’t capitalize on an ideal opportunity, how were the Americans going to score enough to hang in the World Cup?
USA soccer forward Christian Pulisic has been cleared to play in the team's round-of-16 game against the Netherlands, the U.S. Men's Soccer Team announced Friday. Brenden Aaronson replaced Pulisic in Tuesday’s game. The U.S. Men’s Soccer Team had described Pulisic’s status after the game as day-to-day. Pulisic, a Hershey, Pennsylvania, native who plays for Chelsea in the British Premier League, ranks as one of two players with the seventh-most goals — 21 — in USA soccer history. It's clear the U.S. Men's Soccer Team believes Pulisic's participation in Tuesday's game will be clutch.
[1/5] Soccer Football - FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 - Round of 16 - Netherlands v United States - Khalifa International Stadium, Doha, Qatar - December 3, 2022 United States players applaud fans after the match as United States are eliminated from the World Cup REUTERS/Annegret HilseAL RAYYAN, Qatar, Dec 3 (Reuters) - The United States exited the World Cup with a Round of 16 loss to the Netherlands on Saturday but looking towards the 2026 horizon, a bright future is rising for the young Americans. With defender DeAndre Yedlin, who played in Brazil in 2014, the only link to the country's World Cup past, the Americans' lack of experience was glaring at moments but offset by exuberance and a breathless work rate. A gritty, politically charged win over Iran and draws against England and Wales carried the United States into the last 16 but more will be expected on home soil. "We're just not there yet, we have to use this World Cup to establish ourselves. The loss to the Netherlands underscored the hard work ahead if the Americans plan to venture beyond the Round of 16 in 2026.
Dumfries delivers as Dutch head into last eight

It was another Dutch performance at the Qatar World Cup that will not please their demanding supporters as they were unusually cautious at times, played at a slow tempo, and lived dangerously by allowing the Americans plenty of possession. The response from the Dutch was swift. The lively start was quickly replaced with a more languid passage of play, the Netherlands sitting back as they waited for counter-attack chances. Those misses were swiftly punished as the Dutch broke again down the right and scored a carbon copy of the first goal when Dumfries pulled back his cross for 32-year-old left back Blind to score in his 98th international. CNN —The United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) was defeated 3-1 by the Netherlands and knocked out of the World Cup in the round of 16, despite a spirited performance. US President Biden expressed pride in the USMNT’s performance in the World Cup following the team’s defeat , making a nod to the next World Cup in 2026, which will be held in the US as well as Canada and Mexico. This was the USMNT’s youngest ever starting XI for a World Cup knockout match who lined up to face the Netherlands, aiming to reach the quarterfinals for just the second time in the modern era. With that goal, Dumfries became the first Dutch player to be directly involved in more than three goals in a single World Cup match since 1978, according to the statistics website OptaJoe. USMNT star Christian Pulisic said he was “really proud” of the team’s performances at the World Cup.
Striker Memphis Depay got the first goal as the Netherlands advanced to a seventh World Cup quarter-final. “We also lost a lot of ball possession, and it is not acceptable at a World Cup, especially if you are playing a top-level team,” he said. ALMOST IDENTICALThe second Dutch goal, on the stroke of halftime, was almost identical. “They were fantastic goals, they had a beauty about them but they were also team goals,” said Van Gaal. “We talked about the game being about moments," said U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter, whose country co-host the 2026 World Cup.
DOHA, Qatar—The most consequential U.S. men’s national team game in two decades is one coach Gregg Berhalter has been preparing for his entire career. He had no idea when he moved to Holland as a 21-year-old that he would one day face the Netherlands for a spot in the World Cup quarterfinals. But on Saturday, in a win-or-go-home match at Khalifa International Stadium, the soccer philosophy he most admires will be turned against him. It represents the biggest test so far of Berhalter’s skills as an in-game manager, pitting him against one of the great tacticians of the modern game, a wily 71-year-old named Louis van Gaal.
Former American international Berhalter signed his first professional contract with Dutch side PEC Zwolle and also played for Sparta Rotterdam and Cambuur Leeuwarden during an 18-year playing career. Berhalter is not the only person in the American camp with Dutch experience. Right back Sergino Dest was born to a Dutch mother and Surinamese-American father in Almere, Netherlands and grew up in Holland. It's a very good club to develop players and he did really well there," Berhalter said. "It looks pretty good, but we'll have to see him today on the pitch to get confirmation of that," Berhalter said.
CNN —US Men’s National Team head coach Gregg Berhalter had good news for fans on Friday, saying that star player Christian Pulisic is looking likely to play in the team’s round of 16 World Cup clash against the Netherlands on Saturday. Pulisic revealed Thursday that he had suffered a “pelvic contusion” and Berhalter said the Chelsea forward is progressing well. The USMNT is looking to progress to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002, but Berhalter said the team were not looking that far ahead. “It’s literally one game at a time, one minute at a time,” he told reporters. “You also have to realize that it could be a 120-minute exercise and you have to plan your lineups and substitutions accordingly.”More to follow.

In the summer of his junior year of college in 1994, Gregg Berhalter decided it was time to look further afield to continue his studies. He was going to abandon his bachelor’s degree at North Carolina and go chase an education in soccer. The future U.S. men’s national team coach didn’t choose England for his study abroad, the nation that invented the game, or Italy, which had the strongest professional league. Instead, Berhalter settled on a small country full of towns he couldn’t pronounce and fans who all believed they had Ph.D.s in the game.

CNN —US Men’s National Team (USMNT) captain Christian Pulisic shone some light on his mystery injury on Thursday and allayed fears surrounding his fitness heading into Saturday’s huge round of 16 clash against the Netherlands. “I didn’t get, like, hit in the balls,” he added. “I’m alright. It was very painful and that bone is there for a reason to protect you, I think, and I hit it well. It would be a huge blow to the USMNT’s chances if the 24-year-old is forced to miss the match against the Netherlands.
CNN —After a 1-0 victory against Iran earned the US Men’s National Team (USMNT) a place in the World Cup knockout stages, the players insist their campaign is far from done. “I think the narrative continues, we’re still going to try and do that and accomplish our goal of winning the World Cup. Josh Sargent and Ramin Rezaeian embrace after Tuesday's game. At the end Tuesday’s game, players from the two teams embraced in an apparent show of solidarity. “We also know the stakes of a World Cup, and then on top of that everything that they’re dealing with emotionally.
