US stocks, meanwhile, have managed to pull up from their recent bear market into bull territory. Still, there’s good reason for investors to be optimistic, says Indrani De, head of global investment research at FTSE Russell. That makes sense, since tech and energy stocks have largely been driving markets upward over the last few weeks. For instance, leading venture capital firm Sequoia Capital held just more than $1 billion at SVB, according to the FDIC document. The FDIC document shows that Circle held $3.3 billion at SVB, a figure that the stablecoin company previously disclosed.

The S&P 500 has entered bull-market territory thanks to a small handful of tech stocks. Goldman Sachs says that could actually mean good things to come for the rest of the market. Goldman Sachs analysts led by Chief US Equity Strategist David Kostin set out to answer that question. It's no wonder, then, that Goldman Sachs has upped its guidance for where the market will end the year. Below are the 24 stocks that Kostin found which have YTD EPS revisions above the median of 9%.

The rally in growth and tech stocks in the first quarter caught much of Wall Street off-guard, but many ETF strategists are sticking to their call and not chasing the hot sectors quite yet. The big winners in the stock market during the first quarter were found among growth stocks. QQQ YTD mountain Growth stocks rebounded in the first quarter. One area that is popular among value investors is income funds, which can help investors offset market declines by generating cash. The Federal Reserve could lift interest rates by another 75 basis points in total this year, Goldman Sachs says. The bank's chief economist suggested the Fed might raise rates at its March, May and June meetings to beat inflation. Most investors anticipate the US central bank will ease up on tight monetary policy or even start cutting interest rates this year as inflation cools. But with retail sales and payrolls surging and unemployment falling, there's a possibility the Fed may decide it has to keep ratcheting up interest rates. Higher interest rates encourage saving over spending and make borrowing more expensive, which tends to alleviate upward pressure on prices.
In their 2023 outlook, Goldman analysts noted that disagreement about the economic forecast abounds within their own circles. Bill Dudley, a former Goldman Sachs partner and president of the New York Fed, puts the chance of recession this year at about 70%. Goldman analysts say that even with a sour economy, they predict the 2023 investment return on the S&P 500 will most likely be between 9-12%. The Fed’s days of three-quarter-point rate hikes are behind us, said Philadelphia Federal Reserve President Patrick Harker in a blog post Friday. Better-than-expected price data shows that the Fed’s aggressive and economically painful rate hikes are successfully slowing the economy and fighting inflation, he said.
As markets weather volatility, the investment bank recommends options trades with these 4 stocks. In a recent note to clients, Goldman Sachs breaks down this options trading strategy that the investment bank says has an 18-year track record of adding extra income to investors' pockets. Goldman Sachs Global Investment Research"These strategies have become increasingly popular among investors, especially given the prospects of flat to negative equity markets. For short-term overwriting options trades, the note focuses on three factors when choosing an "attractive" stock: events, implied volatility, and market cap of the company. "We have found that overwriting stocks with these characteristics has added over 500 bps over the past 16 years," the note said.
New York CNN Business —The back-to-back huge market rallies last week may seem like a distant memory to investors now that stocks have slid for the past four days. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq both hit new 52-week lows on Tuesday before turning higher, and the Dow is not far from a 52-week low either. That included three instances from late 2008 when market volatility was at a peak during the Global Financial Crisis. The S&P 500 was up nearly 15% one year following massive back-to-back rallies, compared to normal historical gains of just 9%. But it’s also worth noting that the S&P 500 is still slightly higher than where it closed on September 30, despite the recent losses.
