LONDON (AP) — Prince William will travel to Singapore next month to name the winners of his Earthshot Prize, a global competition to find solutions to the challenges of climate change. William created the prize three years ago to encourage inventors and entrepreneurs to develop technologies to combat global warming and mitigate its impact on the environment. During his four-day trip to Singapore, the prince will meet with local groups to learn how they are working to protect and restore the planet. The speech inspired William and his partners to set a similar goal for finding solutions to climate change and other environmental problems by 2030. "Six months of growth shows that British car production is recovering and, with electrified models increasingly driving volumes, the future is more positive," said SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes. The total number of cars produced, however, remained 29.4% lower from the pre-pandemic levels seen in July 2019. Hong Kong CNN —A French minerals company is buying a British startup in a tie-up that could produce enough lithium carbonate to power 500,000 electric vehicles a year. That year is important as Britain is set to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles in 2030, forcing manufacturers to switch to electric vehicles. The combination of the new facility and an existing one in France “would make Imerys the largest integrated lithium producer in Europe, representing more than 20% of the announced European lithium output by 2030,” the company said. Lawmakers are beginning to consider what new rules might be needed because of the rise of AI. LONDON, May 16 (Reuters) - Britain should scrap its tax on buying shares to increase London's attraction as a global financial centre as it faces fierce competition post-Brexit, banking body UK Finance said on Tuesday. Britain is reforming its financial sector following Brexit, which has fuelled concerns over London's ability to attract top company listings. "In the short-term, the 0.5% stamp duty currently charged on share purchases should be removed to reduce the cost of investing and help wider participation," UK Finance Chief Executive David Postings told an event. UK Finance launched a report which made recommendations on how to help the "pre-eminent" financial sector face tough global competition. The recommendations will feed into a broader report being compiled by the UK Capital Markets Industry Taskforce, due in the autumn.

May 6 (Reuters) - Ramping up renewable power production rather than subsidies is the key to lower electricity prices for Germany's energy-hungry industry, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Saturday, in an apparent dig at proposals by his government's economy minister. To extend this for the whole of Germany, Scholz said everything within his powers needed to be done to boost power transmission networks and renewable power production. Scholz was speaking to journalists at a geothermal power plant in Kenya during a trip to Africa. "We know today already that we will have lower power prices than today, once we reached our goal that renewable energies dominate electricity production in Germany," he added. Scholz previously voiced scepticism about the initiative, saying long-term subsidies were not beneficial for the economy.
