Watch The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper: The Gilgo Beach Killer Sunday at 8 p.m. The bodies of four women were among nearly a dozen sets of human remains found near Gilgo Beach and Ocean Parkway on Long Island. Suffolk County Police DepartmentHeuermann has pleaded not guilty to the murders of Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy and Amber Lynn Costello. A major corruption scandal within Suffolk County law enforcement did not help the matter. Notably, a day after he was arrested, the Suffolk County police deputy commissioner announced that the FBI would join the investigation into the Gilgo Beach murders.

CNN —A search warrant for property in South Carolina owned by the suspect in the Gilgo Beach serial killings sought possible “trophies,” among other items, the suspect may have taken after the killings, according to the Chester News & Reporter, which has seen the warrant. CNN has reached out to authorities in South Carolina to obtain the search warrant. The South Carolina warrant shows a long list of items under “property sought,” many of which are listed as “trophies,” the paper reported. The warrant also sought any firearm-related evidence or storage containers. The women, who disappeared between 2007 and 2010, all worked as escorts and advertised their services, according to police.

In his role as a consultant, Mr. Heuermann was often the person brought in to make these sorts of determinations. Like so many professions, architecture can be punishingly stratified, and Mr. Heuermann, who by all accounts was extremely knowledgeable about the city’s labyrinthine building codes, did not fall on the visionary side of the spectrum. Last week a friend called to say that someone had been apprehended in the Gilgo Beach murders and that, however astonishingly, we both knew him. Mr. Heuermann had been in her apartment — deeply aggravating in the moment and intensely creepy in retrospect — and had been rude and dismissive when her architect called him out on a miscalculation he made. During her own renovation, she told me, workers discovered some rotting beams between her apartment and the one above, a problem that Mr. Heuermann said needed to be remedied with drawings for the replacements, which he would produce.

Using phone records and a sophisticated system that maps the reach of cell towers, a team of investigators had drawn the irregular shape across a map of tree-lined streets in the Long Island suburb of Massapequa Park. By 2021, the investigators had been able to shrink the polygon so that it covered only several hundred homes. In one of those homes, the investigators believed, lived a serial killer. A decade before, 11 bodies had been found in the underbrush around Gilgo Beach, a remote stretch of sand five miles away on the South Shore. He was charged with three of the murders, to which he has pleaded not guilty, and was named as the prime suspect in the fourth.

Scarlett Fascetti approached the dilapidated red house as if it were a shrine. Ms. Fascetti could already reel off details about the killings and had quickly gotten up to speed on the three murder charges against Mr. Heuermann. She knew everything from precisely how 11 bodies had been found along Ocean Parkway to the vehicle Mr. Heuermann had in his driveway. Since his arrest on July 13, hundreds of wide-eyed people from across Long Island and beyond have come each day to the home, about five miles from Gilgo Beach, where Mr. Heuermann lived with his wife and two grown children. They have clustered outside police tape on the edge of his block.

Strands of hair were key in the investigationStrands of hair were among the key evidence that helped investigators bring Heuermann into custody. In addition, female hair now believed to be from Heuermann’s wife was found on or near three of the victims, prosecutors allege in the bail application. On Wednesday – less than a week since Heuermann’s arrest – his wife, Asa Ellerup, filed for divorce, her attorney said. Ellerup “and her family are going through a devastating time in their lives,” a Thursday statement from her attorneys said. “The sensitive nature of her husband’s arrest is taking an emotional toll on the immediate and extended family, especially their elderly family members.”“Ms.

When the police returned two days later, they found the remains of three other women — Amber Lynn Costello, Megan Waterman and Maureen Brainard-Barnes. They were all also found bound at the feet or ankles and wrapped in burlap along a stretch of sand about a quarter mile long. Seven other bodies would be found in the months that followed, including Ms. Gilbert, four other women, a man who was never identified and a 2-year-old girl. The bodies, two of which were only partial remains, had not been bound and wrapped as those in the first group were. But that dumping, he said, has generally been the work of an organized crime group or gang.

CNN —Probes into Gilgo Beach serial killings suspect Rex Heuermann now reach across the country as investigators are examining his connections to Las Vegas and South Carolina, where the suspect has owned property. The couple has since sold the first property, the records show, and it is unclear whether they still own the second. Heuermann has pleaded not guilty in the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello. FBI investigators were also seen talking to neighbors in the rural South Carolina neighborhood on Tuesday. Prosecutors have detailed a trove of evidence used to connect Heuermann to at least three of the Gilgo Four killings, including credit card bills, cell phone data and DNA evidence.

His wife has not been charged and investigators said she was out of state or out of the country when all the killings happened. Investigators say stray strands of her hair helped link her husband to the bodies found in 2011. “Could he have been a monster who killed those girls and an angel at home?” said Mery Salmeri, a store manager. Ms. Salmeri said she watched their children grow up over the past 25 years. “I’m not sure what that says about them.”Ms. Ellerup looked depressed, Ms. Salmeri said, and the family often paid with food stamps, unusual at this store.

Authorities have said the suspect, Rex Heuermann, obsessively followed the case of the “Gilgo Four,” a group of four women whose remains were uncovered more than a decade ago near Long Island’s Gilgo Beach. The source said one such object includes a doll found in the house but not in the children’s rooms. Though prosecutors have said Heuermann is the prime suspect in the fourth killing of Brainard-Barnes, he has yet to be charged in the case. Among the hundreds of firearms found hidden in Heuermann’s home were pistols, revolvers and semi-automatic rifles, a source said. Three of the women – Costello, Waterman and Brainard-Barnes – worked as escorts and Barthelemy was a sex worker, according to police.

CNN —Authorities have received a flood of evidence and information related to the suspect charged in some of the Gilgo Beach killings since his arrest, the Suffolk County District Attorney told CNN on Monday. Authorities have had Heuermann on their radar for more than a year as investigators gathered enough evidence to make an arrest. The suspect’s wife and children are cooperating with the investigation, according to Carter. Authorities later said they believed Gilbert’s death may have been accidental and unrelated to the Gilgo Beach homicides. “We’re going to continue to work this case and work the entire Gilgo investigation,” Carter said.

On Friday, details began emerging about Rex Heuermann, who was arrested and charged with murder in the killings of three of the women. Mr. Heuermann, 59, is a married white man who works as an architect in Manhattan and lives in Massapequa Park, about 15 miles from Gilgo Beach. He owned a Chevrolet Avalanche truck at the time of the killings, prosecutors said. None of this proves that Mr. Heuermann is the serial killer, and experts noted that profiles are typically used to evaluate individuals who have already come to the attention of investigators. But the similarities did not go unnoticed by some of the experts who put together the 2011 profile.

His father had built satellites for a living, Heuermann told the interviewer. They first connected him to the killings last year while conducting a review of evidence under a newly formed task force, which included the Suffolk County Police Department, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, the New York State Police and the FBI. Speaking of the arrest, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison said Friday: “Rex Heuermann is a demon that walks among us.

At his office near the Empire State Building, Rex Heuermann was a master of the meticulous: a veteran architectural consultant and a self-styled expert at navigating the intricacies of New York City’s building code. At home in Massapequa Park on Long Island, while some neighbors saw Mr. Heuermann as just another commuter in a suit, others found him a figure of menace. “He was somebody you don’t want to approach.”On Friday, Suffolk County prosecutors said that residents of Massapequa Park had a serial killer living in their midst. They accused Mr. Heuermann, 59, of leaving a quarter-mile trail of young women’s bodies on the South Shore of Long Island in what came to be known as the Gilgo Beach Killings. Yet he was so careful in covering his tracks, they said, that it took them nearly 15 years to arrest him.

Heuermann has not been charged in the case, but the investigation “is expected to be resolved soon,” the document states. I can only imagine what you’ve had to endure over the last decade regarding knowing that your killer was still loose. “For each of the murders, he got an individual burner phone, and he used that to communicate with the victims. By mid-March, Heuermann’s name showed up on authorities’ radar after a New York state investigator identified him in a database, according to Tierney. The victims’ remains “were out in a tough environment for a prolonged period of time.

The Gilgo Beach Victims Were Always More Than Escorts

As the police scoured the beach for more bodies in the spring of 2010 (and found several), Ms. Cann and the family members of the other women were caught in a peculiar bind. Now that they were part of a serial-killer case, the world was beating a path to their doors; perhaps there might even be a break in the case. Then came the horrible hangover of seeing their daughters and sisters in the news, constantly being referred to as prostitutes. The point Ms. Cann made to me on that pier was similar to what all the family members eventually said to me: These women were more than this. “I don’t like how they’re talking about her,” Ms. Cann told me.

The three women that Rex Heuermann is accused of killing — Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Lynn Costello — were discovered wrapped in burlap near Gilgo Beach on Long Island’s South Shore in December 2010. A fourth woman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, was found in the same spot, alongside the other victims, and Mr. Heuermann is also the prime suspect her death, according to the bail application from the Suffolk County District attorney’s office on Friday. The investigation into her death “is continuing and is expected to be resolved soon,” the prosecutors wrote. Mr. Heuermann, an architect who has lived most of his life in Nassau County and worked in Manhattan, on Friday pleaded not guilty to murder in the case of the first three victims and was ordered held without bail.

“After hearing about this case for so many years, it’s a shock to find out that your neighbor is a serial killer and you never knew it,” a neighbor, Cheryl Lombardi, said. The killings terrorized residents for more than a decade as body after body was discovered in the remote area about 40 miles from Midtown. In all, remains of nine women, a man and a toddler were discovered in the area. She disappeared during an escort job in Oak Beach, a gated community three miles from Gilgo Beach. Ms. Gilbert’s remains were found in December 2011, but investigators have said they do not believe her death is linked to the serial killer.

The straight, quiet stretch of Ocean Parkway would give him plenty of time to listen and watch for coming cars. The isolation provided investigators their first clue: The killer knew Long Island well enough to find perhaps its most secluded place. “I don’t think it’s a coincidence that four bodies wound up in this area,” Richard Dormer, the Suffolk County police commissioner, told reporters days after the discovery. The investigation into the murders became mired in a police corruption scandal, after which the case went cold for years. Some local politicians grew frustrated and worried that police had bungled the case.

CNN —A New York architect is in custody for the Gilgo Beach murders, an unsolved case tied to at least 10 sets of human remains discovered since 2010 in suburban Long Island, according to two law enforcement sources. Law enforcement arrive at a Long Island house Friday, July 14, 2023. Eduardo Munoz Alvarez/APAuthorities later said they believe Gilbert’s death may have been accidental and not related to the Gilgo Beach slayings. Additional remains were uncovered in neighboring Gilgo Beach and in Nassau County, about 40 miles east of New York City. Mack’s partial remains were first discovered near Gilgo Beach in 2000, with additional dismembered remains found in 2011, according to the Suffolk County police.

He did not identify the suspect but said a grand jury was expected to hand down an indictment on Friday afternoon. Harrison said more information would be provided at a press conference at 4 p.m. (2000 GMT) on Friday. Police have said that one person might be responsible for all the murders.
