Past debate footage reveals that both generally veer away from personal attacks and prefer loftier rhetoric to digging deeply into specific facts to establish policy credibility. Their past debate opponents said they didn’t always provide direct answers to questions. In both the primary and general election debates, Vance often stuck to policy areas he felt most comfortable with: immigration, the economy and drug control. HOUSTON — A former Houston police officer was convicted Wednesday of murder in the deaths of a couple during a 2019 drug raid that revealed systemic corruption problems within the police department’s narcotics unit. A jury found Gerald Goines guilty of two counts of murder in the January 2019 deaths of Dennis Tuttle, 59, and his 58-year-old wife Rhogena Nicholas. Goines looked down and did not visibly react as the verdict was read in a Houston courtroom. Goines’ attorneys argued during the trial that the first to fire at another person was Tuttle and not police officers. The probe into the drug raid also uncovered allegations of systemic corruption.

But a small, well-funded, and extreme group of right-wing activists is attempting to pressure companies into abandoning their DEI programs. Molson Coors is the latest addition to a growing list of companies reversing their diversity, equity and inclusion policies. Molson Coors will also ensure all corporate charitable giving programs are focused on supporting "core business goals" such as alcohol responsibility, disaster relief efforts and promoting access to higher education. Although conservative activist Robby Starbuck characterized the moves as preemptive changes in response to his probe into the company's DEI practices one week ago, Molson Coors says in its memo that the decision "has been in process since March." Molson Coors' decision comes after a wave of retailers over the summer took a step back in their DEI efforts. Corporate DEI practices received renewed interest in the wake of the murder of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020, but have struggled in the aftermath of the Supreme Court decision to overturn affirmative action in colleges.

A judge in Kentucky has dismissed core charges against two former Louisville police officials involved in the raid that ended in Breonna Taylor's death. Judge Charles R. Simpson III of western Kentucky's U.S. District Court on Thursday said Taylor's death was triggered by the actions of her boyfriend, who opened fire when police arrived outside her Louisville apartment March 13, 2020. "Those violations resulted in Ms. Taylor’s death," he said in a statement at the time. Jaynes and Meany weren't at the raid, and her death was more directly tied to Walker's decision to open fire, the judge wrote. "The Court finds that the warrantless entry was not the actual cause of Taylor’s death," he wrote in his decision.

CNN —A second former Memphis police officer facing federal civil rights charges in the violent arrest and beating death of Tyre Nichols changed his plea to guilty on Friday in federal court. Mills and Martin are among five former officers charged in the death of Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man. He admitted he “willfully used unreasonable force against Tyre Nichols,” “aided and abetted” other officers in assaulting Nichols and “failed to intervene” in other officers’ use of force. Police said the unit was permanently deactivated shortly after Nichols’ death. The beating and Nichols’ death led to protests and vigils in Memphis and other major US cities, reigniting the contentious debate over policing and the ways that law enforcement treat Black people.

Two days after a police officer murdered George Floyd by kneeling on his neck, the mayor of Minneapolis called the governor, Tim Walz, asking for help. The city needed the Minnesota National Guard. It was not until that Thursday afternoon that Mr. Walz, a Democrat, signed an executive order activating the Guard. That night, before large numbers of troops were deployed, rioters set a police station on fire. Ever since, the governor’s response to those requests has been under scrutiny, even more so now that Vice President Kamala Harris has selected Mr. Walz as her running mate.
