Over coffee with Ben Wikler, chair of the Wisconsin Democratic Party, this summer, I was talking about my own unproductive tendency toward political despair, and my recurrent fantasies of moving abroad to give my kids a start in a less cruel country. I was reminded of this conversation when I spoke to Wikler on Sunday, after he’d announced that he was running for Democratic National Committee chair. But while Wikler admitted to the same anxiety many of us are feeling, he sounded animated, almost cheerful. The front-runner is reportedly Ken Martin, head of Minnesota’s Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, mostly because he’s a consensus choice. “If he wins, the party won’t be electing him as a force of personality, but as a safe pair of hands,” wrote Politico.

Return fraud costs retailers billions, with billions lost globally. Amazon and other retailers face scams exploiting return policies for financial gain. French luxury brand Lacoste is using Vrai, an AI technology developed by Cypheme, a leader in anti-counterfeit artificial intelligence, to catch scammers returning counterfeit items. Some companies have even received boxes full of bricks after customers banked refunds for items like televisions. US retailers lost a little over $100 billion in return fraud, or around $13.70 for every $100 returned, up from $10.40 per $100 in 2022.

A splintered social media world is on the horizon — and it's paving the way for a new, more authentic breed of influencer. "People are just trying to find authentic communities," Eric Wittman, CEO of photo-editing app VSCO, told Business Insider. Smoothy said she sees things changing, with different "tiers" of content creators emerging from the industry's oversaturation. New social media horizonsLucy Edgerley, the head of influence at the global social media agency Born Social, told BI that Gen Zers, in particular, are craving creativity, entertainment, and inspiration. Young people who have grown up with social media are learning the lessons about the dark side of it — the mental health toll, the bullying, and the over-consumerism — the hard way, he said.

UK transport minister quits in new blow to PM Starmer
  + stars: | 2024-11-29 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Britain's transport minister Louise Haigh has resigned after pleading guilty years ago to an offence in connection with misleading police over a work mobile phone, in another blow to Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Starmer thanked Haigh for her work and for all she had done "to deliver this government's ambitious transport agenda". The opposition Conservative Party said Haigh had "done the right thing" but asked why Starmer had appointed her when he was apparently aware of her fraud conviction. "The onus is now on Keir Starmer to explain this obvious failure of judgment to the British public," a spokesperson for the Conservative Party said in a statement. Haigh's resignation is yet another blow to the Labour leader, who has seen his party's approval ratings plunge since July.

AdvertisementJob seekers may face 'love-bombing' from hiring managers during interviews. If a hiring manager is excessively complimenting you and telling you you're the top candidate during an interview, you may be being "love-bombed." Many job seekers complain of inconsistent behavior from hiring managers, CNBC reported, being flattered and praised one minute and ghosted the next. "They may overhype your chances to keep you interested," Barber said. It may not always be a scheme, though, and some recruiters and hiring managers may be love-bombing without realizing it.

Speaking to CNBC's Inside India, Ghosh — a professor formerly at India's Jawaharlal Nehru University and currently at the University of Massachusetts Amherst — noted "there is definitely a jobs crisis in India." At some point the hormones would quiet, the fascination would diminish, and I would return to my prior self. How do I reconcile this reality with the ambivalence with which I once approached motherhood? An increasing number of adults say that they are unlikely to become parents, leading to much hand-wringing over declining birthrates. For my generation — and, I’d argue, especially for women in my generation — the decision of whether to have a child has become highly fraught. It’s tied up in an understanding of all that went into making motherhood a choice that we get to make.

Thousands of counterfeit Gibson electric guitars were seized in a multi-agency investigation at the Los Angeles-Long Beach Seaport. The 3,000 fake guitars, if real, would be valued at about $18 million, according to authorities. “This is a big deal,” said attorney Andrea Bates, who represents Gibson Inc. “They were able to facilitate to identify and to seize $18 million worth of counterfeit guitars. “We can pick it up immediately and tell,” Heidt said. “So there are quite a few ways you can tell that it’s not accurate.”The material and sound quality also offer a tell, Heidt said.

More than 30 pilot whales that stranded themselves on a beach in New Zealand were safely returned to the ocean after conservation workers and residents helped to refloat them by lifting them on sheets. Four of the pilot whales died, New Zealand’s conservation agency said. New Zealand is a whale stranding hotspot and pilot whales are especially prolific stranders. “This response demonstrates the deep connection we all share with our marine environment.”A large crowd assisted with the rescue of the stranded whales. Both the North and South Islands feature stretches of protruding coastline with shallow, sloping beaches that can confuse species such as pilot whales — which rely on echolocation to navigate.

William J. Barber II has long been one of America’s most persistent and eloquent spokespersons for poor and working-class Americans. Barber is the recipient of a MacArthur “genius grant” and helps lead the Poor People’s Campaign, which seeks national solutions to ongoing poverty. Barber also done something else: He’s shown Democrats how they can win political victories in red states. He once said, “Racism may target Black people, but it damns a democracy, and it damns humanity.”CNN spoke with Barber about the country’s future in Trump’s impending second term. Critics say Democrats are elitist and look down on working-class people.

I have been watching “The Great British Bake Off” since it arrived on American shores about 10 years ago as “The Great British Baking Show.” The baking competition was such a staple of my mid-aughts TV routine that my older daughter used to call it “cake channel” when she was in preschool. Even so, in all my years watching “G.B.B.O.,” with all its memorable characters, no contestant had ever won my heart the way that Nelly Ghaffar has this season. Ghaffar is a joyful mother of two from Dorset, England, who works as a palliative care nurse, and she’s originally from Slovakia. Her English retains a charming accent, which reminded me of my Austrian oma’s. I am still thinking of her, though she was sent home on the episode that Netflix showed two weeks ago, because the show isn’t the same without her genuine warmth and good humor.

Trump’s turn to bask in Musk’s reflected glory
  + stars: | 2024-11-20 | by ( Stephen Collinson | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +12 min
Musk, the Tesla and SpaceX visionary, has spent the last two weeks basking in Trump’s reflected glory at Mar-a-Lago. He’s around so much it’s almost like he’s family, and he even made it into a photo of Trump’s extended clan. Trump’s growing cultural cloutTrump’s visit to Musk’s launchpad was also the latest occasion since the election when he has inserted himself into high-profile photo-ops. In October, the Biden administration again helped to intercept a barrage of around 200 Iranian ballistic missiles, which also caused minimal damage to targets in Israel. Bringing US troops homeIn 2020, the Trump administration signed a US withdrawal agreement from Afghanistan with the Taliban. But after McMaster was pushed out of office in 2018, the Trump administration negotiated with the Taliban the withdrawal agreement of all US forces from Afghanistan. Powell said more rate cuts are likely underway because the economy’s current trends and dynamics are expected to remain in place, at least in the short run. “We are moving policy over time to a more neutral setting,” Powell said in prepared remarks for an event in Dallas. It’s also too soon for Fed officials to conclude that October data is indicative of any new trend.
