CNN —The 2024 Tony Awards are underway at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. Heading into the ceremony, Alicia Keys’ ambitious musical “Hell’s Kitchen” and “Stereophonic,” a play set in the ’70s about fictional band, led with 13 nominations each. Cast members from productions including “Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club,” “The Who’s Tommy,” “Water for Elephants” and the Hillary Clinton-produced “Suffs,” among others, are slated to perform. The Tony Awards are airing on CBS at 8 p.m. EDT/5 p.m. PDT and will stream on Paramount+ in the US. Maleah Joi Moon won the Tony Award for best leading actress in a musical on Sunday night for her Broadway debut in “Hell’s Kitchen,” a fictionalized remix of Alicia Keys’s childhood. Moon recently spoke with The New York Times about earning a Tony nomination for her first professional role, a 17-year-old girl who discovered a gift for piano while chafing under her mother’s vigilance. “It’s surreal and it’s ridiculous and crazy and insane and all the things,” said Moon, 21. “But my inner child — the one that wanted to be Nala on Broadway — is like, this is aligned. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t meant.”The other nominees in the best leading actress category were Eden Espinosa (“Lempicka”), Maryann Plunkett (“The Notebook”), Kelli O’Hara (“Days of Wine and Roses”) and Gayle Rankin (“Cabaret”).

Over the years I’ve had to adapt frequently to the changing technology, which isn’t always easy for someone my age. Kansas City shooting survivor Jacob Gooch, Sr., who was shot in the ankle, told "CBS Mornings" on Thursday that he overheard an altercation prior to the mass shooting following a parade and rally for the Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday. Gooch told CBS' Gayle King that before gunfire started, he heard a woman tell a presumed shooter, "don’t do it, not here; this is stupid." Gooch said his wife and daughter then saw a gun being drawn. He told CBS his wife was shot in the calf, while Gooch was shot in the ankle and sustained breaks to a few metatarsal bones in his foot. Gooch did not specify his son’s injuries or provide an update on his son’s medical status.
