CNN —Violence is intensifying in Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, this week, which saw a United Nations helicopter hit by gunfire and two gangs apparently target US embassy vehicles. Thursday’s helicopter shooting will “likely” cause US airlines to halt their operations once again in Port-au-Prince, the second source told CNN. Last March, major US carriers like Spirit, JetBlue, and American Airlines suspended their operations at Port-au-Prince’s international airport for nearly three months after a sudden spike in gang violence. Gang violence in Haiti has spiraled in recent years, with attacks becoming more brazen and violent. Members of the “Gran Grif” gang used automatic rifles to kill at least 70 people in an attack that displaced 6,000 people, said a UN agency at the time.

But when Tapper pushed back, noting that Trump has described Democrats such as Rep. His alarming behavior may look to some like a candidacy melting down when the pressure is at its most extreme. With polls deadlocked, Trump’s behavior hasn’t yet disqualified him. And Trump’s voters still regard him as a vessel for their frustration with a political and economic system they believe has poorly served them. Trump’s behavior underscores stakes of deadlocked electionIt will be up to voters to decide how to process Trump’s recent conduct. The Harris campaign, which began as an attempt to spread joy, is now fully exploiting Trump’s rhetorical rampages.

CNN —Donald Trump called Democratic Reps. Adam Schiff and Nancy Pelosi each “an enemy from within,” even as the former president’s Republican allies attempt to argue that his previous comments labeling political opponents as such are being misinterpreted. But when you look at ‘Shifty Schiff’ and some of the others, yeah, they are, to me, the enemy from within,” Trump said in an interview on Fox News’ “MediaBuzz” that aired Sunday. Fox News’ Howard Kurtz gave Trump an opportunity to clarify — “He’s a political opponent of yours, but is he an enemy?” — to which Trump responded, “Of course he’s an enemy, he’s an enemy.”Trump also called Pelosi an “enemy from within,” falsely claiming the then-speaker of the House had the opportunity to protect the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. “I did not hear President Trump in that clip say he’s going to sic the military on Adam Schiff. “Losing the workers would devastate our companies, our industry and our economy.”‘The math is just not there’There is evidence that foreign-born construction workers help keep the housing market in check. “Immigrant construction workers in Sun Belt metros like Raleigh, Nashville, Houston, and San Antonio have helped these cities sustain their housing cost advantage over coastal cities despite rapid growth in housing demand,” the authors wrote. Undocumented workers would likely flee ahead of any national deportation effort, Hetrick said, even though many have been in the U.S. for well over a decade. Past as prologueLast year, the state’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, enacted a series of restrictions and penalties to deter the employment of undocumented workers. Many immigrant workers hastily left the state even before the policies took effect, with social media videos showing some construction sites sitting empty.

CNN —After spending several years building a life he loved in San Francisco, Jason Bennett, originally from the Bay Area, had every intention of remaining in the Californian city for good. At the same time, he realized that he was mostly returning to San Francisco because he felt that was what was expected of him. “The (Colombian) culture is so kind, they don’t really like to say, ‘No,’” he says. “And I don’t ever want to come across as like I’m shading San Francisco or the United States in general. Hong Kong CNN —She appeared to be a beautiful woman and in the minds of men across Asia, the video calls they spoke on confirmed their newfound love was real. But Hong Kong police say the men had fallen prey to a romance scam that used deepfake artificial intelligence to lure its victims into parting with more than $46 million. In a news conference Monday, police in the Asian financial hub announced the arrests of more than two dozen members of the alleged scam ring, which they say targeted men from Taiwan to Singapore and as far away as India. But increasingly realistic deepfake technology has raised the stakes and put authorities on high alert. According to Hong Kong police, the romance gang’s deepfake scam typically began with a text message, in which the sender – posing as an attractive woman – said they had mistakenly added the wrong number.

Former President Donald Trump said Sunday that if elected he would ask Congress to pass legislation boosting the number of border patrol agents — several months after he thwarted a bipartisan measure that included staffing increases. Trump this year opposed a bipartisan measure that was the most aggressive border security bill in decades, one that would have imposed measures aimed at cutting the number of border crossings and tightening asylum rules. "That’s why he killed the bipartisan border bill that would’ve secured the border, despite the fact that it was endorsed by the Border Patrol," Corridoni said in a statement. Trump announced his plan to beef up border security shortly after members of the National Border Patrol Council, the labor union for Border Patrol agents and staff members, joined him onstage to voice their support for him. The same union, under a different president, endorsed the bipartisan bill that Trump helped block.

In this 2004 photo, then-District Attorney Kamala Harris waits for a proceeding to convene in San Francisco. The long-standing problem of racial inequities in the criminal justice system is among the issues that prompted Harris to become a prosecutor in the first place. “I grew up knowing about the disparities, inequities, and unfairness in the criminal justice system,” Harris said during a 2019 town hall hosted by MSNBC. And I am proud of the work that I did.”As a prosecutor, Harris adopted what she called a “smart on crime” approach to law enforcement. Her cautious stance on the issue frustrated many advocates of criminal justice reform, including those who expressed support for Harris on other issues.

AURORA, Colo. — Former President Donald Trump painted a dark picture of Colorado’s third-largest city at a rally here Friday as he once again claimed it had been overtaken by a Venezuelan prison gang. But the city’s police chief told NBC News that Aurora is still “very safe.”“It's not overrun. Without question, Aurora is still a very safe city. In August, the Trump campaign spent about $15.5 million on television ads centered on immigration. In the face of this polling, though, Trump is betting on his gut, telling a Wisconsin crowd on Sunday, “I really don’t agree” that the economy will decide the election. And it’s the hardest problem to solve too.”On comfortable groundIllegal immigration is certainly comfortable terrain for Trump. We’re all intellectuals today,” Trump said in a mocking tone in August in Asheville, North Carolina, where he was supposed to speak about the economy. The images rapidly spread around social media, with Trump supporters claiming they depicted Venezuelan gangs taking over an apartment complex.

With less than four weeks until Election Day, Trump is scheduled to hold rallies in staunchly Democratic states he has virtually no chance of winning. President Joe Biden won those states by an average of 20 points in 2020, with his 13-point Colorado win the closest margin. “Choosing high-impact settings makes it so the media can’t look away and refuse to cover the issues and the solutions President Trump is offering,” said a senior Trump campaign adviser of the strategy behind late-election cycle events in Democratic states. He called Trump the “most unorthodox candidate in modern history,” which means the off-script strategy could have some value. “Aurora, Colorado has become a 'war zone' due to the influx of violent Venezuelan prison gang members,” Trump’s campaign said in a statement announcing the event.

CNN —The mayor of a crime-ridden city in Mexico has been killed less than a week after taking office, the latest in a string of violent attacks targeting politicians in the country. However, the violence facing Mexican politicians stretches far beyond Guerrero, as was demonstrated by the historic June 2 election that took Sheinbaum to power. With 20,000 electoral positions up for grabs, the scale of bloodshed committed by those attempting to influence the vote was unprecedented. Just hours after Sheinbaum’s election, the woman mayor of a town in western Mexico was shot dead. It says that criminal gangs often finance campaigns during election season, intimidating candidates and violently intervening to compel politicians to cooperate with them.

Sweden registered 81,301 asylum seekers in 2014, data shows. Jonas Ekstromer | Afp | Getty Images"It pains me that Sweden is no longer capable of receiving asylum seekers at the high level we do today. Since then, Sweden's immigration policy has been on a one-way street. A decade ago, all member states of the European Union were encouraged to welcome asylum seekers and refugees fleeing conflict zones in the Middle East, notably Syria but also Iraq and Afghanistan. This year, Sweden is expected to have its lowest number of asylum seekers since 1997.

CNN —The US Supreme Court will decide whether a federal law prevents Mexico from suing gun distributors for allegedly facilitating the flow of firearms to drug cartels. The court had already agreed to hear cases on President Joe Biden’s regulation of “ghost guns” and vaping. Mexico says gunmakers are recklessIn its lawsuit, Mexico alleged the manufacturers and distributors were aiding and abetting the purchase of their firearms by dealers known to supply drug cartels. At the heart of the dispute before the Supreme Court is the 2005 federal law passed by a GOP-led Congress. Lawyers for Mexico, which asked the court not to disturb the 1st Circuit’s ruling, defended the ruling’s rationale and argued that it was premature for the Supreme Court to take up the case.

Daniel Day-Lewis, widely considered one of the greatest actors of his generation, is emerging from retirement after seven years away from the big screen. He’s starring in Focus Features and Plan B’s upcoming film “Anemone,” which marks the directorial debut of his son, Ronan Day-Lewis. Daniel Day-Lewis and Ronan Day-Lewis co-wrote the film, described as an exploration of the intricate relationships between fathers, sons and brothers as well as the “dynamics of familial bonds.” Daniel Day-Lewis will lead the cast of “Anemone” his first acting gig since 2017’s “Phantom Thread,” alongside Sean Bean, Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley and Safia Oakley-Green. “We could not be more excited to partner with a brilliant visual artist in Ronan Day-Lewis on his first feature film alongside Daniel Day-Lewis as his creative collaborator,” Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski said in a statement. “I knew it was uncharacteristic to put out a statement,” Daniel Day-Lewis said.

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (AP) — The Dominican Republic announced Wednesday that it would start massive deportations of Haitians living illegally in the country, expelling up to 10,000 of them a week. Government spokesman Homero Figueroa told reporters that the government took the decision after noticing an “excess” of Haitian migrants in the Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti. Last year, the Dominican Republic deported more than 174,000 people it says are Haitians, and in the first half of the year, it has expelled at least 67,000 more. Activists have long criticized the administration of President Luis Abinader for what they say are ongoing human rights violations of Haitians and those of Haitian descent born in the Dominican Republic. Mexico City Associated Press —Claudia Sheinbaum will take the oath of office Tuesday as Mexico’s first female president in more than 200 years of independence, promising to protect an expanded social safety net and fight for the poor like her predecessor, but facing pressing problems. Sheinbaum romped to victory in June with nearly 60% of the vote, propelled largely by the sustained popularity of her political mentor, former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. “So, where López Obrador was charismatic, Claudia Sheinbaum will have to be effective.”He is not leaving her an easy situation. Things with its northern neighbor were already tense after López Obrador said he was putting relations with the US embassy “on pause” after public criticism of the proposed judicial overhaul. López Obrador built a massive new oil refinery and poured money into the state-owned oil company.
