Trump 2.0 could be bad news for global inflation, analysts say
  + stars: | 2024-07-16 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
Brendan Smialowski | Afp | Getty ImagesA second presidential term for former President Donald Trump could reignite global inflation as his America-first policies drive up costs across the world, analysts warned. "The level of inflation is higher, inflation expectations are higher, and we're still in this inflation mindset." A recent poll of economists suggested, however, that the majority see inflation ticking higher under Trump due to his hard-line protectionist stance. watch nowThat higher inflation could spill over into Asia, too, Nomura's Gareth Nicholson said in a note to CNBC. In Europe, Goldman Sachs predicted in a Friday note that a Trump presidency could add a 0.1 percentage point increase to inflation as higher tariffs weigh on global trade.

What Kane really needs for his legacy, for his place in the public mind, is a moment. Kane scored 280 goals for Tottenham before he left last year, 14 more than the previous record set by Jimmy Greaves. Through what we may soon call the Gareth Southgate golden age, Kane has been England’s best player. Southgate consoles Kane after England’s elimination in Qatar (David S. A late winner from England substitute Ollie Watkins against Netherlands put Gareth Southgate’s team into the final of Euro 2024, where they will face Spain. It is their second consecutive European Championship final, and the first time England have reached a major tournament final abroad. Denzel Dumfries catching Kane was deemed a penalty, despite the Netherlands defender having little choice but to attempt a block. Against the Netherlands, Rice dropped into similar positions but was far more willing to punch balls forward and look for those ahead of him. Watkins’ stunning winner — set up by Palmer — validated Southgate’s decision yet again, with a goal worthy of winning any game.

CNN —A dance tune with two simple instructions and involving thousands of bouncing, orange-clad soccer fans has gone viral at this year’s European Championships. Prompted by the song, fans link arms and jump to the left. It might sound straightforward enough, but the sight of thousands of fans dressed in orange dancing and singing in unison while walking to the game has been something to behold at Euro 2024. Ahead of the Netherlands’ group game against France, Kemps went to Leipzig to help entertain the Dutch fans before the match started. While Dutch people have sung and danced to the song for years, Kemps says fans of Dutch soccer started adopting it after the women’s team won the European Championship in 2017.

CNN —Ollie Watkins’ brilliant last-gasp winner earned England a 2-1 win over the Netherlands and a place in Sunday’s Euro 2024 final. Awaiting England in Sunday’s final is the formidable foe of Spain, which has been unequivocally the best team of Euro 2024 so far. After only seven minutes, Simons – named after Barcelona great Xavi Hernández – dispossessed Declan Rice in midfield and stormed towards the England penalty area, before unleashing an unstoppable shot past Jordan Pickford and into the top corner. Foden, who was having by far his best game of the tournament, then hit the woodwork himself as the post denied the Manchester City forward a stunning curled effort. CNN —England reached its second successive European Championship semifinals after a 5-3 penalty shootout victory over Switzerland at Euro 2024 on Saturday after the quarterfinal had ended 1-1. Trent Alexander-Arnold scored the decisive penalty to seal the win for England as it booked its spot in the final four having lost in the final at the last edition of the tournament. Nothing could separate the two teams in extra-time and so the game went to penalties. Switzerland’s first penalty from Manuel Akanji was saved by Jordan Pickford and that miss proved pivotal as England’s players dispatched their attempts with aplomb. England will face the Netherlands or Turkey in the semifinals, with the two team’s facing off later on Saturday in Berlin.

For a cricket-obsessed nation, where the team are national celebrities and the sport is played everywhere, it has been a long 13-year wait without a World Cup trophy. And it was the manner of India’s victory, as much as the victory itself, that sparked such ecstatic celebrations. But the boys just kept fighting, they kept believing.”Although India emerged as the winners of the men’s T20 World Cup, the USA and Afghanistan also starred in this tournament, announcing themselves on the world stage. The USA, playing in its first ever men’s T20 World Cup, pulled off one of the biggest upsets in the sport when it shocked Pakistan with a dramatic Super Over victory in the group stages. Ultimately, Afghanistan was thrashed by an impressive South Africa in the semifinals, exiting the T20 World Cup alongside defending champion England whose often listless tournament came to an end against India in their semifinal.

This was, for the most part, a dismal England performance, regardless of the supernatural deliverance at the end. Everything that was bad about today in Gelsenkirchen had been signposted by England over the course of the last few weeks. The red flags had all been there since England opened their campaign in this same city two weeks ago. And yes, England are desperately flawed, still unbalanced, still uncertain on the ball, still struggling to create chances even when they dominate possession. AdvertisementThis was Belgium at their finest, and Romania raised the level of their game in the second half to try to equalise. If Austria wanted to have any chance of qualifying to the round of 16 they had to beat Poland in their second group game. The wide areas were where Ukraine focused their attacks, and Oleksandr Zinchenko’s square pass to Mykola Shaparenko made it 1-1 in the second half. However, Samet Akaydin and Altay Bayindir’s mishap on the second goal decreased Turkey’s probability of a comeback. More off-ball runs in the second half led to the third, and by then the match was done and dusted.

Unfortunately, that word — the key word in all of this — is not one that can be used here. Or, if you are Gary Lineker, you might use the word on a podcast to describe an England performance at the European Championship. Reduced to its core elements, then, it might be hard — particularly to outsiders — to understand why the word has caused such consternation. Lineker, a respected former player and a judicious pundit, suggested that England had played poorly. Gareth Southgate, the England coach, spoke after the very same game of needing to “hit the reset button.” The players have admitted that they have not performed well thus far.

Read preview"Oppenheimer" star Cillian Murphy has reunited with director Danny Boyle for the long-awaited horror sequel "28 Years Later," two decades after his breakout role in "28 Days Later." In the original film, Murphy played Jim, a bicycle courier who wakes up from a coma to find that the UK has been hit by the "Rage" virus, which turns people into zombies. While Boyle produced the 2007 sequel, "28 Weeks Later," the Juan Carlos Fresnadillo-directed film focused more on gory action, than the suspense-driven horror of the original. Related storiesIn January 2024, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that "28 Years Later" is in the works by Boyle and "28 Days Later" writer Alex Garland. In May, Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman Tom Rothman confirmed to Deadline that the "Oppenheimer" star will reprise his role as Jim in "28 Years Later."

CNN —England secured top spot in Group C with a goalless draw against Slovenia on Tuesday, but another underwhelming performance throws up more questions about the Three Lions’ status as one of the Euro 2024 favorites. The team created few real chances of note and were again met by boos at full-time from traveling England fans. England, meanwhile, had been heavily criticized for two poor performances to open Euro 2024: a narrow 1-0 win over Serbia and a 1-1 draw with Denmark. England’s slight improvement in the second half, though, will likely have Southgate rethinking his starting lineup ahead of the last 16.

AdvertisementTaylor Swift is joined onstage by Travis Kelce during The Eras Tour in London. This was especially evident during The 1989 World Tour, which ran for nearly seven months in 2015. Mostly thanks to her talent and partially thanks to her self-spun underdog narrative, she had enjoyed years of headlines like "Taylor Swift: America's Sweetheart" and "Taylor Swift Is the Music Industry." Australia won the T20 Cricket World Cup just three years ago, while Afghanistan has never progressed past the tournament’s second round nor defeated Australia in international cricket. But on Saturday, Afghanistan kept its hopes of progressing to the semifinals alive with a historic, comprehensive win over Australia, stunning its opponents by 21 runs. Afghanistan has been steadily improving over the past 20 years, roundly defeating England in October at the ICC Cricket World Cup and another heavyweight team New Zealand in the group stage of this tournament. Afghanistan has a chance to reach the semifinals of the T20 World Cup if it can defeat Bangladesh in its final Super Eights match and India beats Australia. If Australia wins its final Super Eights match against India, it will likely qualify for the semifinals.

CNN —England players will enjoy the ulti-mutt home away from home at Euro 2024, with portraits of their dogs dressed as royalty hung in their bedrooms at their base camp in the German town of Blankenhain. Conor Gallagher's Chow Chow features on his Instagram page frequently. Purr and MuttAmong them are midfielder Conor Gallagher’s fluffy Chow Chow, whose third birthday he celebrated a few weeks ago on Instagram, captain Harry Kane’s chocolate Labrador, goalkeeper Jordan Pickford’s Cavapoo and midfielder Eberechi Eze’s Shar Pei. Boasting a team stacked full of talented players, England began the tournament as one of the favorites with expectations that it might end the long drought of 58 years without a major trophy for its men’s team. But the team has faltered in its opening two games, holding on to defeat Serbia 1-0 before labouring to a 1-1 draw against Denmark on Thursday.
