Saturday night’s winners were familiar to those who have been following awards season, as actors from “The Bear,” “Oppenheimer” and “Beef” took home statuettes as expected. The cast of “Succession” led the nominations among the television categories with five – nabbing the top honor for best ensemble. “Oppenheimer” reigned victorious with three of those awards, while “Barbie” was shut out. This is the first SAG Awards since last year’s prolonged actors’ strike in Hollywood – a fact that was brought up several times throughout the evening – and is also the last major entertainment awards event before next month’s Oscars ceremony.

Immediately after the polls closed on Saturday night, CNN projected that the former South Carolina governor had come up short to Trump. During the fourth quarter of 2023, Haley out-raised Trump, $24 million to $19 million. In January 2024, as the rest of the GOP field winnowed, Haley’s fundraising again bested Trump’s, $9.8 million to $8.8 million. To her credit, Haley has taken dead aim at both Trump and Putin, accusing the former of emboldening the latter. During the 2016 South Carolina primary, there were still six serious candidates in the GOP race.

JPMorgan Chase on Thursday said several executives considered frontrunners to one day take over for CEO Jamie Dimon had new or expanded roles. Jennifer Piepszak, co-head of JPMorgan's giant consumer bank, will now became co-head of the firm's commercial and investment bank along with Troy Rohrbaugh, a veteran leader of the bank's trading operations. Piepszak's former partner, Marianne Lake, will transition from consumer banking co-head to being its sole CEO, JPMorgan said. The moves should give Piepszak and Lake more experience as the long-running succession race atop the nation's largest bank drags on. The running joke within JPMorgan is that for Dimon, considered the top banker of his generation, retirement is always five years away.

“There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no ‘Barbie’ movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film,” Ryan Gosling said. Her first three films as a solo director — “Lady Bird,”“Little Women” and “Barbie” — have all been nominated for best picture. One likely factor: the increasingly international composition of the film academy. After Ben Affleck went unnominated for directing 2012's “Argo,” voters rallied around his movie, ultimately handing Affleck the Oscar for best picture. Whether the same effect could follow “Barbie" will be one of the biggest questions leading up the Academy Awards.

Read previewMargot Robbie and Greta Gerwig were two of the most-discussed snubs of Tuesday's Oscar nominations. But another huge upset of the 96th Academy Award nods was the lack of recognition for "The Color Purple" remake. The Color Purple was going to be snubbed whether Taraji spoke out or not because a lot of the noms were voted on prior. Instead of negative press, "The Color Purple," among other contenders, was likely affected by different factors, including the SAG-AFTRA strike and its Christmas release. "By waiting until December to release 'The Color Purple,' they were late to the conversation," he added.

Ron DeSantis ended his presidential campaign on Sunday, succumbing to the final realization of defeat in a candidacy that once held such promise. And yes, it was then-President Donald Trump whose endorsement powered DeSantis to that very general election in the first place. After pundits point out this a bold strategy for a historic swing state, DeSantis pulls off a historic reelection rout. Just like DeSantis, Walker ended up being doomed by the sheer rate at which his campaign burned through contributions. But in this reality, a week ago DeSantis lashed out at "worthless" Republicans who back Trump.

Liberia presidential election heads for November run-off vote

Reuters —Liberia’s electoral commission on Tuesday scheduled a presidential election run-off for November after results showed that the two frontrunners, President George Weah and opposition leader Joseph Boakai, had failed to secure enough votes. Weah holds a slim lead at 43.83% of the vote, while Boakai has 43.44%, according to tallied results from 100% of polling places, the West African nation’s election commission said. Commission chairperson Davidetta Browne Lansanah said the run-off vote would be held on Nov. 14. Liberia is struggling to recover from two civil wars that killed more than 250,000 people between 1989 and 2003 and from a 2013-16 Ebola epidemic that killed thousands. Boakai, 78, was Weah’s main challenger and campaigned on what he called the need to rescue Liberia from alleged mismanagement by Weah’s administration.

The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded on Friday to Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi. Mohammadi received the prize for "her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all," the awards committee said. The award will further encourage Mohammadi to continue her work, her husband Taghi Rahmani told Reuters. "This Nobel Prize will embolden Narges' fight for human rights, but more importantly, this is in fact a prize for the woman, life and freedom movement," Rahmani said Friday in an interview with the news agency. The announcement follows much speculation over who would win this year's prize, with the likes of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian dissident Alexei Navalny both touted as frontrunners for the illustrious award.

CNN —The Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded in Norway on Friday, as Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine rages on and other flashpoints threaten to ignite across the globe. But the peace prize can serve as a beacon of hope in fraught and fractured times. “I think it’s precisely in a situation like this that the peace prize becomes particularly important. But Nobel specialists have been quick to dismiss such speculation, saying it is rare for the peace award to go to a wartime leader. “It would be like saying in 1941 that (then-British Prime Minister) Winston Churchill should get the Nobel Peace Prize.

"It's interesting to use the term median human — that's importantly different from average human," Henry Shevlin, an AI ethicist and professor at the University of Cambridge, told Insider. How tech bros are defining this idea of median human intellect is open to question. Traditional measurements for comparing AI and human intelligence have tended to focus on capabilities rather than general intellect.
