CNN —Close flybys of Io, one of Jupiter’s moons and the most volcanically active world in our solar system, have revealed a lava lake and a towering feature called “Steeple Mountain” on the moon’s alien surface. “We also got some great close-ups and other data on a 200-kilometer-long (127-mile-long) lava lake called Loki Patera. Juno detected the mountain with the help of the sun shining on Io’s surface, which created dramatic shadows that revealed a very sharp peak. NASA/JPL-Caltech/SwRI/MSSSAs an outdoors enthusiast, Bolton joked that Io’s Steeple Mountain should be one of the solar system’s skiing and snowboarding destinations. The mission team used Juno’s Microwave Radiometer instrument to create maps of Io’s surface, showing how incredibly smooth it is.

Why do we toss coins into fountains?

CNN —All over the world, and for centuries, people have thrown coins into fountains, wishing wells and rivers for good luck. Some fountains collect thousands, or even millions, of dollars worth of coins each year. George Rose/Getty ImagesWhere the money goesSome well-known fountains can collect thousands of dollars in coins each year. According to an NBC report from 2016, the Trevi Fountain accumulated about $1.5 million in coins that year. A spokesperson for the Mall of America in Minneapolis told CNN the fountains collect about $25,000 each year.

A volcano erupted with little notice in southern Iceland on Saturday night, the latest in a string of eruptions in the area, threatening local infrastructure and leading the authorities to declare a state of emergency. Lava fountains burst out of the ground, and a nearly two-mile-long fissure opened up on the Reykjanes Peninsula around 8:30 p.m., the Icelandic Meteorological Office said. The meteorological office said that it had received indications of a possible eruption only about 40 minutes before it happened. The Blue Lagoon and Grindavik were evacuated shortly after the eruption, according to RUV, the national broadcaster. About 700 visitors were staying at the Blue Lagoon.

There will still be shamrocks this year, but Israel’s war in Gaza is lending a darker backdrop to the occasion. While he rebuffed calls by some Irish politicians to boycott the annual White House stop, he has made plain the Gaza war lends fresh urgency to this year’s talks. “I’ll use that opportunity to put across Ireland’s perspective on this and tell them how Irish people feel. Last year, Varadkar declared Biden “unmistakably a son of Ireland” and announced the president’s forthcoming visit to the island. LAS VEGAS (AP) — A visit from a rare, fine-feathered tourist has interrupted one of Las Vegas’ prominent shows. Initially, the Bellagio's fountain shows were paused while officials figured out how to proceed, an MGM Resorts International spokesperson told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Wildlife officials determined that the bird wasn't bothered and the show was cleared Tuesday to resume, but a spokesperson later said the shows would remain on hold. The Associated Press sent an email Wednesday seeking updated information from an MGM spokesperson, including when the shows might resume. The bird likely sought shelter from a storm, Nielsen said, noting that it isn’t uncommon for migratory birds to visit the valley.

Buying bottles of water in the parks is a waste of money. I bring my own water bottle to the parks. hurricanehank/ShutterstockInstead of buying water at the parks, I like to bring a reusable bottle that I can easily refill at one of the many water fountains. If you don't have a bottle, any quick-service food location on the property will also be able to give you a free cup of ice water. Either way, it's a great way to save money because the single-use water bottles at Disney are at least $3.50 each.

Where Old Vegas is still alive today

MuseumsMuseums are obvious celebrations of the past, and in Las Vegas, these two museums have direct links to the Vegas of old. At the Neon Museum, Old Vegas is showcased in the form of neon signs. Other attractionsSeveral other sights and destinations around Las Vegas keep the city’s past alive in this modern age. At one point every casino in Las Vegas had a machine like this one; today this is the only coin-operated iteration left. Finally, the most recognizable throwback to Old Vegas might be the neon “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign at the south end of the Las Vegas Strip near Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino.

CNN —Researchers have cracked one of the mysteries hidden within a Roman egg, discovering that it still contains its liquid almost two millennia after it was first laid. Pottery and other finds uncovered alongside the egg were dated to the late 3rd century AD, allowing archaeologists to estimate its age too, Biddulph added. A woven basket, thought to have contained bread, was found alongside the eggs. A micro-CT scan of the egg showed it still had liquid inside. “Nobody has seen anything like this before so every stage of the research into this is creating new moments of amazing potential,” he said.

Plans that strengthen infrastructure for temporary and permanent affordable housing, and increase local support for demographics most vulnerable to homelessness, were consistently successful. Building paths to permanent housing in those cities improved overall housing access, researchers said. But Seattle has higher rates of unsheltered homelessness, so resources were better directed to building more temporary housing options. Chicago and New York have seen longer-term success in reducing homelessness, but both saw a spike between 2022 and 2023. The main driver of homelessness is the severe housing shortage across the country, so the most fundamental solution is creating more affordable housing.

Live video from the area showed fountains of bright-orange molten rock spewing from fissures in the ground, in sharp contrast to the still-dark night sky. “Warning: A volcanic eruption started north of Sylingarfell,” the country’s meteorological office said on its website. Marco Di Marco/APIntense earthquake activity began around 5:30 a.m. and the outbreak itself started some 30 minutes later, it added. Thursday’s eruption took place some way from Grindavik and was unlikely to pose a direct threat to the town, Icelandic geophysicist Ari Trausti Gudmundsson told Reuters. Icelandic authorities in November started building dykes that can help divert burning lava flows away from homes and critical infrastructure.

I worked as a flight attendant for two years and picked up tips for saving money while traveling. Don't waste your money on food and water at the airport or the overpriced snacks on the plane. But don't wait until you get on the plane — flight attendants don't usually have that much power. You already paid for the ticket, taxi, and luggage, so don't waste your money on overpriced airport water. A volcano system in southwestern Iceland erupted on Thursday, for the third time since December, with fountains of bright orange lava visible from Iceland’s capital, Reykjavík, about 30 miles away. The eruption occurred at 6 a.m., according to the country’s Meteorological Office, on a mountain ridge on the Reykjanes Peninsula, where a significant share of Iceland’s population of about 375,000 lives, although they did not appear to be at risk. Iceland’s civil defense agency said the nearby Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa that is a popular tourist destination, had been evacuated on Thursday morning. Grindavik, a small fishing town of 3,800 that is the closest population center to the volcano, was evacuated before the volcano last erupted in January and destroyed part of the town. It remains empty.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas proposed to the NFL in December 2021. “Let’s just marry these brands, and let’s bring the Super Bowl here,” Steve Hill, president and CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, recalled telling a room of NFL franchise owners. The betrothal culminates Sunday in a not-so-intimate ceremony at Allegiant Stadium, where the city will host its first-ever Super Bowl. He isn’t alone in his excitement: Parking spots for private jets in and around Las Vegas have all been spoken for. Strolling across that span after a major event like the Super Bowl makes for a memory that can't be recreated, Naft said.

NASA's Juno spacecraft snapped detailed images of the most volcanically active world in our solar system on Saturday. During this close fly-by, the spacecraft spotted plumes of volcanic activity erupting from Io's surface in real-time. This encounter was the second in a set of two close fly-bys designed to provide new insight into the fiery phenomena that lurk beneath Io's surface. The twin flybys are designed to provide new insight into how Io’s volcanic engine works and whether a global magma ocean exists under Io’s rocky surface. The Blue Zones Kitchen Minestrone Casserole is currently on sale at Whole Foods for $6.99, almost five times that price. Building flavor for healthy food you'll actually be excited to eat is also easier than you might think. Why America hates its children
  + stars: | 2024-01-07 | by ( Lydia Kiesling | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +17 min
Time and again, I was struck by a public attitude toward children I seldom encountered in America: unequivocal support. In America, we socialize our children to see strangers not as helpers but as threats. Virtually every other industrialized nation provides more government aid for their children than America does. Children who are neglected — a loose term inextricably tied to poverty — are thrown into a foster-care system known for its propensity to harm children. From the tumult of the pandemic, the calls for America to care more for its children are getting louder.
