CNN —Drinking a small amount of wine each day may protect the heart, according to a new study of Spanish people following the plant-based Mediterranean diet, which typically includes drinking a small glass of wine with dinner. “People often say that ‘wine is good for the heart’ but we also know too much wine is ‘not good for the heart’,” said Paul Leeson, professor of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Oxford, who was not involved in the study. Igor Alecsander/iStockphoto/Getty ImagesQuestionable conclusionsThe research, published today in the European Heart Journal, is part of an ongoing Spanish study investigating the impact of a Mediterranean diet on people at risk for heart disease. “By measuring tartaric acid in the urine, alongside food and drink questionnaires, we have been able to make a more accurate measurement of wine consumption,” Estruch said. Naveed Sattar, a professor of cardiometabolic medicine and honorary consultant at the University of Glasgow in Scotland who was not involved with the study, advised against drinking wine or any alcohol for good health.

Stimulant medications, and atomoxetine (a type of antidepressant), were more effective than placebos at reducing core ADHD symptoms during a 12-week period, found the study published Tuesday in the journal Lancet Psychiatry. Prior to conducting this study, Cortese and several other study authors had various types of affiliations — such as for consulting or research — with pharmaceutical companies, some of which manufacture ADHD medications. They also mention non-pharmacological treatment if medication is not effective or not well tolerated, but they don’t specify which kind of non-pharmacological treatment. “Self-perception of ADHD symptoms is fallible in all people. However, there are no ‘objective’ tests that can accurately measure ADHD symptoms.

Speaking on the campaign trail in late September, Trump announced his desire to turn Germany's auto giants into American car firms. "I want German car companies to become American car companies. Trump has since announced plans to introduce new tariffs on China, Canada and Mexico in one of his first acts in office. Rico Luman, senior sector economist for transport and logistics at Dutch bank ING, said Germany's auto sector appears to be significantly exposed to Trump's tariff threats. "We are evaluating the tariffs Trump has proposed," a spokesperson for Volkswagen told CNBC via email.

CNN —Flying slowly and silently through the night sky, barn owls are majestic nocturnal hunters that successfully prey on rodents scurrying along the ground below. Unlike the snowy owl, the barn owl lives at latitudes where it doesn’t regularly snow. The barn owl’s paradoxically bright plumage baffled biologist Juanjo Negro and his colleagues, who thought the intriguing biological phenomenon warranted further investigation. The barn owl's white coloring allows the bird to approach its prey without being detected, according to a new study. “This explanation has not been proposed before to justify the whiteness of barn owls,” Negro added.

Why new retirees may need to rethink the 4% rule
  + stars: | 2024-12-17 | by ( Greg Iacurci | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
A popular retirement strategy known as the 4% rule may need some recalibration for 2025 based on market conditions, according to new research. The 4% rule helps retirees determine how much money they can withdraw annually from their accounts and be relatively confident they won't run out of money over a 30-year retirement period. According to the strategy, retirees tap 4% of their nest egg the first year. But that "safe" withdrawal rate declined to 3.7% in 2025, from 4% in 2024, due to long-term assumptions in the financial markets, according to Morningstar research. "We caution, the assumptions that underpin [the 4% rule] are incredibly conservative," Benz said.

The communication breakdown happens as the social platforms launched in the 2000s have taken on larger lives than anyone anticipated. The candid nature of group chats gives them value and tethers people with looser connections together, but that can also make them unwieldy. Group chats can languish for years; there's no playbook for leaving or kicking out someone who's no longer close to the core group. If a couple breaks up, who gets the group chat? But his group chat might still have the best vibes of all.

CNN —Google’s newest artificial intelligence tool, “Whisk,” lets people upload photos to get back a combined, AI-generated image – even without users inputting any text to explain what they want. Google’s Whisk is an image-to-image generator, building upon the popular concept of text-to-image generators. Users can add in text if they want to direct certain details, but it is not required to create an image. Google’s Whisk is built upon the generative AI developed by DeepMind, the AI lab that Google acquired in 2014. For example, the generated image might have a different height, hairstyle or skin tone as the prompt images, Google said in a blog post.

Nearly all advisors use mutual funds and ETFs, about 94% and 90% of them, respectively, Cerulli said in a report issued Friday. Currently, mutual funds account for 28.7% of client assets and ETFs account for 21.6%, it said. While that is about half the roughly $20 trillion in mutual funds, ETFs have steadily eroded mutual funds' market share since debuting in the early 1990s. Liquidity, transparency and low fees are among the top reasons advisors are opting for ETFs over mutual funds, Cerulli said. ETFs also generally disclose their portfolio holdings once a day, while mutual funds generally disclose holdings on a quarterly basis.

The American dream — like a beloved pair of pants you left in the dryer too long — is shrinking. Their millennial counterparts felt similarly, though they were slightly more bullish on the possibility of the American dream. And even among those who might have achieved the American dream — higher earners with college degrees — life satisfaction has slipped. At the same time, there's a bittersweet parallel running alongside the shrinking of the American dream. But now that the American dream is within reach for these people, it's already shrinking.

The quarter-percentage point cut the Federal Reserve is widely anticipated to deliver this week could be a bad idea, according to Ed Yardeni, president of Yardeni Research. "The last word we got from Fed Chair Jerome Powell was the economy is strong and we don't need to rush to lower interest rates. Fed funds futures predict a 99% chance that the U.S. central bank will cut interest rates by another quarter percentage point this week, and less than a 1% probability of rates remaining at their current levels. "Everything, to me, suggests that interest rates are just about where they should be," Yardeni added. By reducing rates now, the U.S. central bank risks a market meltup that could lead to a "wicked correction."

CNN —Two Russian tankers carrying thousands of tons of fuel were badly damaged in stormy weather near the Black Sea over the weekend, leading to an oil spill, according to Russian state media. The tankers were carrying more than 9,000 tons of oil, emergency services reported, according to TASS. Some of this oil spilled into the Kerch Strait, which specialists were preparing to clean up, it said. The region suffered a similar oil spill in November 2007, when five ships sank in storms in the Black Sea and the Azov Sea. In that incident, strong winds and high surf caused the Volgoneft 139 to split in two, spilling up 560,000 gallons, or approximately 1,000 tons, of fuel oil.
