WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican businessman Perry Johnson suspended his long-shot bid for president on Friday after failing to gain traction in the race. Johnson said the fact that he wasn't permitted to participate in the debates played a major role in his decision. Johnson spent money earlier this year to run an ad during the Super Bowl targeting voters in Iowa, the first state to vote on the GOP presidential field, touting his plan to cut federal spending by 2% every year. He announced his presidential bid in early March shortly after speaking at the opening day of the annual Conservative Political Action Conference. The businessman earned a fortune starting Michigan-based Perry Johnson Registrars Inc., which certifies if businesses are meeting industrial standards.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — The Miami Dolphins are placing rookie running back De'Von Achane on injured reserve on Wednesday after he suffered a knee injury against the New York Giants. Coach Mike McDaniel did not confirm whether Achane's injury will require surgery, nor did he provide many details on the extent of the injury. He said it is not a “grave” injury, and he expects Achane to return this season. Achane will miss Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers, as well as matchups against Philadelphia, New England and Kansas City. As his rivals prepare for the two-hour showdown on Fox News, Trump’s campaign is attempting to counter-program the debate. But Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr. and other surrogates planned to travel to Milwaukee, where they would have had opportunities to weigh in on national broadcasts before and after the debate in the spin room. Ahead of the debate, some candidates are offering previews of their lines of attack – including criticizing Trump for choosing not to participate. “Every one of us who have qualified for that debate stage ought to be on the stage willing to square off and answer those tough questions,” Pence said. Overall, 42% say Trump is their first choice, followed by 19% supporting DeSantis.

DeSantis was seen as a major threat to Trump at the beginning of the year but his campaign has been flagging in recent weeks. Trump has been indicted twice this year, and his poll numbers in the Republican presidential nomination race keep going up. Still, Trump dominates the Republican field, and his lead has grown stronger since the criminal charges. The problem for DeSantis and his other rivals is they have not yet worked out a way to counter a frontrunner who is facing multiple criminal charges. DeSantis has shied away from attacking Trump over the indictments, out of fear of alienating the Republican base.
