Details on the Cybertruck are still sparseSome Cybertruck order-holders have told Insider that they are concerned about how few details Tesla has shared with them on the Cybertruck. And this isn't just any Tesla vehicle launch: it's Tesla's entrance into the highly-competitive pickup truck market, where specs and prices are closely followed by shoppers. Tesla hasn't set a date for the Cybertruck launch partyIn late August, Tesla said customers could buy invitations to a Cybertruck delivery event using 30,000 referral credits, which owners accrue through Tesla purchases.

[1/2]Striking United Auto Workers (UAW) union workers picket outside the Ford Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan, U.S., September 23, 2023. Workers went on strike on Sept. 15 at one plant each from GM, Ford and Stellantis. The union escalated on Sept. 22, when workers walked off the job at GM and Stellantis distribution facilities in 20 states nationwide. UAW workers also are threatening to walk off the job at heavy truck maker Mack Trucks on Sunday, and at three Detroit casinos. A UAW strike has shut down a plant that builds axles for Mercedes-Benz's Alabama vehicle factory.

“I don’t know why Jim Farley is lying about the state of negotiations," Fain said in a statement responding to the Ford CEO. "Despite our willingness to bargain Ford and GM have refused to make meaningful progress," Fain said in a video address Friday morning. It began on Sept. 15, when workers struck at one plant each from GM, Ford and Stellantis. The UAW did not strike at Ford distribution facilities last week, citing progress in talks with that company. Analysts estimate GM, Ford and Stellantis earn as much as $15,000 per vehicle on each of their respective large pickup truck models. The Ford assembly plant in Chicago builds the Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator SUVs, while the GM plant in Lansing makes the Chevy Traverse and Buick Enclave SUVs.

UAW President Shawn Fain, in a Facebook live event, said that by targeting distribution centers the strike becomes a nationwide event. Stellantis has said it wants to be able to consolidate and close some of its parts distribution centers. Nearly 13,000 UAW workers walked out at plants in Missouri, Michigan and Ohio on Sept 15. "GM and Stellantis are looking at stockholder value and Ford is looking a lot more long-term that they have to make friends with labor." Fain said on Friday that the union had negotiated the elimination of lower wage tiers in some components facilities at Ford and GM.

NEW YORK (AP) — The United Auto Workers' strike is getting bigger. Currently, UAW workers hired after 2007 don’t receive defined-benefit pensions. During walkouts, workers are set to receive about $500 a week in strike pay — far short of what they earn while they’re working. During a 40-day UAW strike in 2019, GM lost $3.6 billion. The UAW strike is also testing President Joe Biden’s claim that he’s the most pro-union president in U.S. history.

The company delivered just 1,348 Lyriqs and 47 Hummers in the second quarter, far below expectations, in part because of issues with battery module assembly. A longer strike could help GM address and potentially resolve some of those ongoing issues in its EV and battery operations, according to Sam Fiorani, vice president of global vehicle forecasting at AutoForecast Solutions. "A production stoppage could allow GM to solve bottlenecks,” Fiorani said. Wedbush auto analyst Daniel Ives said the strike was "a potential nightmare situation" for GM given it comes exactly at a key period of ironing out EV issues. In addition, the UAW strike in the United States could affect the flow of critical auto parts to GM operations in Canada and Mexico, which would hamper EV production there, Rinna said.

REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsDETROIT, Sept 15 (Reuters) - The United Auto Workers union launched simultaneous strikes at three Detroit Three factories early on Friday, kicking off the most ambitious U.S. industrial labor action in decades. Fain's decision to go with targeted walkouts could limit the cost to the union of strike pay. UAW President Fain has taken an unorthodox approach to the negotiations, bargaining with all three Detroit automakers simultaneously. But the Detroit automakers build some of the U.S. market's best-selling vehicles, such as the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado pickup trucks and Jeep SUVs.

Fain says the targeted strikes will give the union leverage in contract talks and keep the auto companies guessing about the UAW’s next move. Currently, UAW workers hired after 2007 don’t receive defined-benefit pensions. If a walkout occurs, workers would receive about $500 a week in strike pay — far short of what they earn while they’re working. During a 40-day UAW strike in 2019, GM alone lost $3.6 billion. The union’s inability to organize U.S. factories run by foreign automakers represents a disadvantage for the union because those companies pay less than Detroit companies do.

A strike would ground production to a halt, costing billions of dollars in losses for automakers as well as their suppliers. UAW workers have struck work for two days at GM and for one day at Chrysler in 2007. Prior to 1976, strikes were frequently used as a bargaining tool at Detroit Three. A strike could impact the inventory and deals that car buyers get from Ford, GM, and Stellantis. But a looming strike by the United Auto Workers could throw the market back into some disarray, automotive industry and manufacturing experts told Insider. Would-be Tesla Cybertruck buyers still don't know how much they're spending. Apart from the few remaining details listed and the occasional cryptic tweet from Musk, there isn't much information to tell Cybertruck buyers what they're getting into. Tesla Cybertruck. That makes it even more important to give loyal truck buyers some details to work with. "If you're looking to convert average pickup truck buyers to something different, that's a little harder," Fiorani said.

"Hybrid is a great alternative to a pure electric vehicle (and) it's an easier sell to a lot of customers." Interest in hybrids is rebounding as consumer demand for pure electrics has not accelerated as quickly as expected. Sales of pure electrics will claim about 37%, leaving combustion vehicles — including so-called “mild” hybrids — with a nearly 40% share. In addition to new pure electric models coming soon, "we are very bullish on hybrids going forward," a spokesperson said. Current EV market growth "cannot be sustained," analyst says. The cap for rapid EV growth appears to be around 7% of the market. After years of rapid growth, the electric vehicle market is heading for a plateau. The states with the biggest share of electric vehicle sales are also the slowest to grow sales at the moment, according to a recent study from iSeeCars. California, Oregon, and Washington – where EV sales account for between about 7% and 10% of the market – are currently among the slowest-adopting states, the study found.

The Bolt does not align with GM's long-term EV technology strategy, but it is the Detroit automaker's best-selling and most affordable EV in North America, by far. Barra and GM officials did not say how much the new Bolt would cost or where it would be built. For GM, the Bolt has been the mainstay for its North American EV sales. In the first six months of this year, U.S. Bolt sales totaled 33,659 vehicles, outselling Ford's Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai's Ioniq 5 and other EVs from established automakers. Bolt sales rebounded this year after GM was forced to halt production of the car for nearly six months to fix problems linked to battery fires.

GM said adjusted pre-tax profit and margins in its key North American market fell from the first quarter, despite a jump in revenue and per-vehicle transaction prices. GM said it now expects full-year net income of $9.3 billion to $10.7 billion, up from a previous forecast of $8.4 billion to $9.9 billion. GM's pre-tax profit margin for the first six months of the year fell to 8.3% of revenue, down from 8.9% a year ago. Barra said GM can cut capital spending by simplifying its product line, reducing the number of different combinations of colors and features offered. In the first half, GM built about 50,000 EVs, most of them the older Bolt model, which is priced from $27,495.
