CNN —The world’s largest butterfly tree of life is helping researchers determine where the winged insects originated when they first appeared on Earth about 100 million years ago. Scientists first uncovered in 2019 how this single shift to daytime activity served as the evolutionary turning point for all butterfly species. Together, the researchers collected DNA from nearly 2,300 species from 90 countries that represent all butterfly families. “We used multiple fossils for the study in order to calibrate particular parts of the tree,” Kawahara said. “Europe doesn’t have many butterfly species compared to other parts of the world, and the ones it does have can often be found elsewhere,” Kawahara said.

California banned actively targeting white sharks in 1994, as well as certain fishing nets that often entrapped the sharks. But when a 16-year-old girl in Australia was killed in a shark attack on Saturday, she wasn't swimming in the ocean. Bull sharks are considered by many experts to be the most dangerous sharks in the world. Still, although you are more likely to encounter a bull shark in a river than another species, attacks remain uncommon. In 2022, there were 57 unprovoked shark attacks on humans worldwide, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History's International Shark Attack File. Bull sharks, great white sharks, and tiger sharks are the most common species to be involved in an attack.

United Airlines passengers spotted a snake in business class after the plane landed in Newark, per reports. It was unclear how the snake ended up on the United flight. The reptile was identified as a garter snake, port authorities told Reuters. United told Reuters and other publications that passengers alerted cabin crew to the snake and airport officials in Newark helped with the situation. An AirAsia flight was diverted in February after passengers discovered a snake in an overhead light fixture on the plane.
