The five Republican presidential candidates on Wednesday’s debate stage gave staunch support to Israel’s invasion of Gaza, rejecting pleas to rein in the conflict and calling on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to destroy Hamas, the Islamic militant group that killed 1,400 civilians and Israeli soldiers in a surprise attack last month. Israeli forces have killed more than 10,000 Palestinians in Gaza in their reprisal for that attack, according to the Gazan health ministry. Ron DeSantis of Florida said he wanted Israel to “finish the job once and for all with these butchers, Hamas,” and denounced critics of Israel’s invasion, saying he was “sick of hearing other people blame Israel for defending itself.”

These young voters faulted Israel’s response to the attacks, 52-32 percent. This wartime shift represents a fundamental break within a liberal coalition that has long powered the Democratic Party. Clearly, the most left-leaning young adults have the lowest rating of Israel. The Arab American Institute commissioned John Zogby Strategies to conduct a survey of 500 Arab Americans between Oct. 23 and Oct. 27. In this poll, 32 percent of Arab Americans identified as Republican as opposed to just 23 percent who identified as Democrats.

Several months before his guilty plea, Kelley posted on social media that the Capitol riot was an FBI “set up." Kelley spoke at a “Stop the Steal” rally at the state Capitol in Lansing in November 2020, shortly after the presidential election. Kelley remained on Capitol grounds for nearly two hours but isn't accused of entering the building that day. Also on Tuesday, a woman who smashed a window at the Capitol and used a bullhorn to direct other rioters on Jan. 6 was sentenced to four years and nine months in prison. A prosecutor has said Powell, 41, of Sandy Lake, Pennsylvania, played a “leading role” during the riot.

WASHINGTON, Oct 3 (Reuters) - U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's grip on power was in question on Tuesday as the House of Representatives, driven by Republican infighting, was holding a historic vote that could remove him from his job. If the rebellion by right-wing fellow Republicans against McCarthy is successful, it would be the first time in U.S. history that House lawmakers voted their leader out. "We need a speaker who will fight for something - anything - other than staying on as speaker," said Republican Representative Bob Good. "Think long and hard before you plunge us into chaos, because that's where we're headed," said Republican Representative Tom Cole. "This country does not need more drama," said Republican Representative Steve Womack.

WASHINGTON, Oct 3 (Reuters) - Embattled U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday teed up a vote on a challenge to his leadership by a fellow Republican, in an intra-party dispute that could plunge Congress into chaos. McCarthy said the House of Representatives will vote later in the day on a motion by Representative Matt Gaetz, a McCarthy antagonist, that could potentially remove him from his post. The chamber could hold a straight up or down vote, or could hold a vote to sideline it. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries declined to say how his members would vote, or whether they would vote as a unit. I think that that's pretty telling," said Republican Representative Tim Burchett, who said he would vote to oust McCarthy.

CNN —The US House of Representatives is bracing for a key vote Tuesday over Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s political future as GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida pushes for his ouster. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy speaks with reporters at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC, October 3, 2023. No House speaker has ever been ousted through the passage of a resolution to remove them. If a procedural vote fails, then there would be a vote directly on whether to remove McCarthy as speaker, which would take only a majority to succeed. Drew Angerer/Getty ImagesTo force a vote, a member must go to the House floor and announce their intent to offer the resolution to remove the speaker – as Gaetz did.

“I have enough Republicans where at this point next week, one of two things will happen: Kevin McCarthy won’t be the speaker of the House or he’ll be the speaker of the House working at the pleasure of the Democrats," GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz told reporters after he filed the motion. Those threats escalated over the weekend after McCarthy relied on Democrats to provide the necessary votes to fund the government. But McCarthy has recently welcomed the effort to oust him and suggested it’s an opportunity to silence his critics once and for all. The motion Gaetz introduced is a privileged resolution, a designation that gives it priority over other measures. The next step is for House leaders to schedule a vote on the resolution within two legislative days.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. Matt Gaetz said Sunday he will try to remove House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a fellow Republican, from his leadership position this week after McCarthy relied on Democratic support to pass legislation that avoided a government shutdown. Gaetz, a longtime McCarthy nemesis, said on CNN's “State of the Union” that McCarthy was in “brazen, material breach” of agreements he made with House Republicans in January when he ran for speaker. As a result, Gaetz said he would be filing a “ motion to vacate the chair,” as House rules permit. Procedural votes could be offered to halt the motion or it could trigger a House floor vote on whether McCarthy, R-Calif., should remain speaker. “The only way Kevin McCarthy is speaker of the House at the end of this coming week is if Democrats bail him out,” Gaetz said.

McCarthy’s Centrist Path Out of a Government Shutdown

But with a funding bill seemingly out of reach, all signs suggest that those entrenched positions will result in a long and painful government shutdown. And it may be enough to arouse a dormant group of centrists whose own interests favor a functional legislative branch. And adding to McCarthy’s bind is the pledge that conservatives will call for his ouster should he work with Democrats to avoid a shutdown. Moderate Republicans, flanked by House Democrats, seize upon the moment. Meanwhile, another possible path, however unlikely, appears open to willing Democrats and centrist Republicans.

It was unclear whether enough Republicans will vote on the House floor for the rules, which must be established before the House can proceed to the funding bills themselves. Infighting between far right and moderate House Republicans has so far stymied attempts to advance most legislation that would keep the government running when the new fiscal year starts on Oct. 1. A short-term spending bill, known as a continuing resolution, will almost certainly be needed to avert many federal agencies from suspending operations when existing monies expire in a week. Instead, House Republicans have prepared the four separate, full-year spending bills that are certain to be rejected by the Democratic-controlled Senate. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has said the House may begin advancing the four bills on Tuesday as he seeks leverage in negotiations with the Senate.

Instead, they are preparing four separate spending bills, most of which reflect the deep cuts sought by the party's right flank. The House could vote on those bills on Tuesday, Speaker Kevin McCarthy said. Passage of the spending bills could give Republicans some leverage in negotiations with the Senate. On Thursday, the House blocked a procedural vote on an $886 billion defense spending bill, as five Republicans joined Democrats to capsize it. If it passes, McCarthy would have to decide whether he would bring it up for a vote in the House, knowing it could enrage his far-right Republicans.

WASHINGTON — As the Republican stalemate over government funding continues, two freshman GOP House members opened the door Thursday to end-running their party's leadership and working with Democrats to fund the government. Lawler told reporters that if Republicans can't unify to pass a continuing resolution, or CR, to approve short-term funding, he will pursue a discharge petition with Democrats. "If there is not going to be a CR coming out of the House Republican caucus, then I will move forward with a discharge petition," he said. That means at least five Republicans would have to break off for a discharge petition to succeed — potentially more if not all Democrats sign it. Democratic leaders have downplayed the prospects of a discharge petition to resolve the mess and noted that one hasn't been filed.
