New York CNN —America’s gyms are adjusting their strategies as more of their members take weight loss drugs. JPMorgan researchers estimate that 30 million people may be taking GLP-1 drugs by 2030, or around 9% of the US population. For now, GLP-1 medications are prohibitively expensive for most Americans, costing about $1,000 or more a month. (Ozempic has not been approved for weight loss by regulators, though Wegovy, a similar drug, has.) It also made a $100 million-plus deal to buy Sequence, a telehealth business that offers virtual prescriptions to patients for these weight loss drugs where appropriate.

Read previewI recently visited the Fairmont Century Plaza's 14,000-square-foot spa and well-being center in Los Angeles to experience a 30-minute "power nap" biohacking treatment. Put simply, biohacking is using methods from scientific fields like biology and neurology to enhance one's health and well-being. This power nap would involve making a series of incremental changes to my body that, according to the spa's site, could either help me feel more relaxed or more energized. I paid $150 for my 30-minute "power nap" session, which is also offered in increments of 60 and 90 minutes for an additional cost. Student Housing Has a New Mantra: Bigger Is Better
  + stars: | 2024-02-13 | by ( Kevin Williams | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
When the Standard, an off-campus student housing complex, opened in the fall in Bloomington, Ind., welcoming its first batch of residents, it had a decidedly resort vibe. Along with the requisite pool and fitness centers, it enticed students with two pickleball courts, a dog park and a motion sports simulator. The arms race over amenities in student housing is nothing new, but what is striking about the Standard is its size: 1,000 beds, about twice the size of a typical dorm. In fact, the Standard could house 3 percent of Indiana University’s 34,000-plus undergraduates. Off-campus student housing complexes across the country are getting larger, some home to more than 1,500 students, and they are being built on prime parcels as close to campus as possible, as developers seek to better manage their bottom line.

I spent 22 days on a Holland America cruise and saw places like Antarctica and Chile. The cruise cost me $144 a day, and is one of the more cost-effective ways to see Antarctica. I went with family members and we paid $3,175 a person, which is about $144 a day. Erin YarnallI never thought any sort of trip to Antarctica would be in my budget, let alone a cruise. Once on board, though, I was very impressed with the ship's fitness center.

That was the vision of Joan Kroc, billionaire philanthropist and heiress to the McDonald’s fortune of her husband, Ray. And today, 20 years later, 26 grand, state-of-the-art Kroc centers have opened in places as varied as Ashland, Ohio; Guayama, Puerto Rico; and Quincy, Illinois. Half was to be earmarked for the construction of recreation centers, with the other half deposited into endowments to support them. In the two decades since Kroc’s bequest, quantifying the precise impact on all of the communities served by the Kroc centers is difficult. She explained that Joan Kroc meant for the place to be accessible to all — that beauty was part of her plan.

When residents at Sun City Center, a sprawling retirement community in West Central Florida, struggle with their electronics, many of them now know who to call on: Maria Hodge, one of their newest residents, and also one of their youngest. Since moving to this 55-plus community last year, Ms. Hodge, 59, has become a fixture among the nearly 11,500 residents, where the average age is 79. She serves as secretary of the synchronized swim team. “We have people here who still have what we call the dino-phone,” she said. And most of the women on my swim team are challenged when it comes to electronics.”

Life Time Group shares plummeted 15% Wednesday after the company's third-quarter results revealed higher spending to boost the premium member experience. The cost of running its fitness centers, including new and ramping locations, rose 8.2% year over year during the quarter to $319.4 million, the company said. The program changes are an attempt to keep Life Time's affluent customer base satisfied as prices rise across the board and many consumers increasingly value premium offerings. Life Time increased its prices at many of its locations in recent years, though pricing varies by market. "We aren't taking advantage of all the different connections we have and all the different programs we have, so there is essential work being done to systematize all of that."

Now may be the time to shop for an office lease. As office vacancies soar to record highs in some markets, office landlords often have no choice but to find new and creative ways to attract new clients. "When you have 55-year-old managing partners of a law firm looking for office space, and they see the golf simulator, they get pretty excited," he said. Long-term leases, which usually feature landlord-financed renovations to the office space, are now being offered with lease-termination options. Office landlords without access to this capital level are often left with only one lever: renting below market price.

That’s because workers at the site on the outskirts of town in December 2022 unearthed the ruins of an ancient Roman temple — or ‘capitolium’ — dating back to the first century BC. The excavation site in Sarsini has yielded ruins on top of ruins, literally. MiBac“We have unearthed three separate rooms, likely dedicated to the triad of gods Jupiter, Juno and Minerva,” lead archaeologist at the excavation site Romina Pirraglia told CNN. The discovery of the temple has pushed local authorities to revise their building plans. “The temple is an incredible finding that sheds light on how ancient Roman towns rose and fell across time.”What makes the discovery exceptional is the temple’s unique state of preservation.

This relatively new and growing segment of the housing market is called “build for rent” or BFR (or “build to rent” or BTR). Often constructed in suburban areas with low crime and near good schools, BFR homes attract those who want the lifestyle of a house — but the affordability or convenience of renting. Over the past few years, however, large investment groups — like Home Partners of America or Invitation Homes — have got into buying up existing single-family homes to rent. Miller said demand for BFR homes is strong and suit a modern way of living involving remote work, lifestyle moves and delayed homeownership. Even as a small portion of the market, those BFR homes that are being built are not the smaller, more affordable homes that middle-income earners are looking for.
