LOS ANGELES (AP) — It didn't take long for Southern California's Bronny James to make an impact in his first game against rival UCLA. The freshman blocked the shot of UCLA's Dylan Andrews as he drove to the basket, but the son of Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James ended up celebrating a little too much. James picked up a technical foul with 12:06 remaining in the first half when he yelled “give me that (stuff)" toward Andrews and the crowd at the Galen Center. It was James' first technical foul in a collegiate game. James went to the bench after the technical before coming in later in the first half.

PHOENIX (AP) — Chris Paul's return to Phoenix ended in the second quarter on Wednesday night after the 12-time All-Star was ejected by his old nemesis: referee Scott Foster. The Golden State Warriors guard and Foster have a long, acrimonious history, with the point guard complaining about Foster's officiating for nearly a decade. Now Paul says that a years-old issue that involves his son is at least part of the reason for the friction. Foster walked away but Paul kept yelling and the referee quickly turned and gave the point guard another technical, which caused the ejection. Everybody gets frustrated out there, but that’s up to the official.”Warriors team personnel had to get between Paul and Foster before the guard left the court.

When Mark Cuban launched his first tech startup, he couldn't have known he'd end up a billionaire today. He was confident, though, that his sales pitch for the company — a software startup called MicroSolutions — would work. In the proposal, Cuban wrote that his tool would be a great resource for attorneys looking to streamline their workflow — by having information "immediately published electronically to the organization," as opposed to using notebooks. Basically, it was our version of Slack long before Slack," Cuban wrote in a follow-up post. A year after sending his pitch to the law firm, Cuban sold MicroSolutions to now-defunct internet services company CompuServe for $6 million.

In September, one of Boston's own homegrown companies, Klaviyo, was among the first tech startups to pry open the IPO market, which had been closed for a two-year stretch. According to research by Carta, Boston has a healthy lead on other cities for total capital raised across biotech, health-tech, medical devices, and energy companies so far this year. It's also worth mentioning that funding to Boston startups has cooled from the peak in 2021, as has funding everywhere. In celebration of this vibrant scene, Insider is recognizing the most important venture capitalists in the greater Boston area. We asked VCs from across the country about the Boston investors to know, and we also referred to our past reporting on the top seed investors to find more picks.

Anthony Noto, CEO of digital banking and personal finance company SoFi , told CNBC's Jim Cramer the company has been able to grow immensely since it received its banking license. The company has its roots in financing student loans but was licensed to become a bank last year. SoFi's second-quarter report showed the company had gained more than 584,000 new members during the quarter, with more than 6.2 million total members, up 44% year over year. Noto added that SoFi is attracting customers with its mobile-first technology and financial products such as personal loans to pay off credit card debt, as well as student loan refinancing. "If you have a student loan, you want to lower your monthly payment, you're able to do that either via a lower rate or extending the term," Noto said.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Alexander Nguyen, a software engineer who moved from New York City to Seattle for a job at Amazon. It was his first job out of college, and he says it was the loneliest time of his life. Finally, after a three-month job search, things started looking up: I received a software-development-engineering job offer from Amazon in 2020. Back when I got the job at Amazon, all I was thinking about was my tech career and the $150,000 salary. Looking back now, I realize perhaps I should have looked a little bit harder for opportunities in New York before taking the first tech job that came my way.

That benefit is disappearing as Snap wants to get people in the office at least four days a week. Instead of the food benefit, workers have been told to "explore" on-site lunch offerings. Snap is ending a benefit for employees to buy food during the work week. It also afforded Snap employees who worked in other offices that did not offer catered food some parity on a company perk they'd never had access to. Snap was one of the first tech companies, after Apple, to reveal to employees such a strict RTO policy .

A generative AI tool is designed to help real estate firms decide which properties to buy and sell. The AI tool does the work of a real estate analyst. It then drafts memos recommending which properties real estate companies should buy and sell, Sahil Rattan, Termsheet's chief operating officer, told Insider. The client is looking to snap up commercial real estate properties whose prices have cooled from just a few years ago. Since the AI tool ChatGPT went live to the public in November, businesses in nearly every industry have been racing to capitalize on AI.

Young workers are going all in with salary transparency, whether they're sharing how much they're paid with social media followers or co-workers and friends in real life. And Charlotte Chaze, 32, a Philadelphia-based tech worker took it another step further: She recently posted the salaries of all of her previous jobs to her LinkedIn profile. "I believe in salary transparency, and I wanted to show others what's possible," Chaze tells CNBC Make It. Despite the buzz of her experiment, Chaze says she doesn't actually recommend other workers do the same because it could work against them. Rather, Chaze would rather companies carry the responsibility of salary transparency.

Don't seek out an investor, says billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban. Cuban — who is, notably, an investor on ABC's "Shark Tank" — launched his first tech company, a computer systems startup called MicroSolutions, using his own money. In 1994, Cuban and his friend Todd Wagner invested $10,000 in a small startup called Cameron Audio Networks. "What really gets me going is when people have an operating business where they've already gone for it. For unpredictable expenses, Moran recommended using your own funds.

ZoomInfo Technologies is a "Buffett-esque" stock with big upside ahead, according to DA Davidson. ZI 1D mountain ZoomInfo Technologies shares 1-day ZoomInfo made its public debut in June 2020, jumping more than 60% in its first day on the Nasdaq. Since then, trading has been volatile for the software stock. The provider of sales software should also get a boost from tech layoffs that's expected to reduce sales departments. "We see the long-term opportunity not only from the base data product, but mostly from continued expansion as the leading Sales Enablement provider," Luria wrote.

Insider asked ChatGPT, the viral AI chatbot sweeping the internet, to whip up a layoff memo for a pretend tech company, Gomezon. Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, researchers at Alphabet's DeepMind, and other AI leaders are calling for a pause on training AI models more powerful than OpenAI's GPT-4. My colleague Emilia David looked at why Elon Musk and other tech leaders are right: AI needs to slow down. An Apple Watch is an essential for many of us these days, but the right band can make all the difference. Check out Insider's review of the 18 best Apple Watch bands in 2023.
More companies are backtracking on earlier pledges to let employees work from home on a full or part-time basis. Across industries, major corporations including Disney, Twitter and Starbucks are requiring employees to spend more time at the office. Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce, is the latest leader to appear to reverse course after embracing remote work and criticizing return-to-office mandates. "Our hybrid approach empowers leaders to make decisions for their teams about how and where they work," a Salesforce spokesperson said in a statement. "And if leaders at big companies are adjusting their return to office policies, others will see that and think, 'I can do the same.'"
[1/2] A smartphone with a displayed ChatGPT logo is placed on a computer motherboard in this illustration taken February 23, 2023. It singled out the harmful use of ChatGPT in three areas of crime. "ChatGPT's ability to draft highly realistic text makes it a useful tool for phishing purposes," Europol said. It said ChatGPT's ability to churn out authentic sounding text at speed and scale also also makes it an ideal tool for propaganda and disinformation. Criminals with little technical knowledge could turn to ChatGPT to produce malicious code, Europol said.
