FDIC Chairman Martin Gruenberg said in March the agency was also probing possible misconduct related to the collapses of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and Signature Bank (SBNY.PK) New York. As with SVB and Signature Bank, the FDIC is probing whether First Republic executives and board members broke rules that require them to act in the bank's best interests. NO ACTIONThe March implosions of SVB and Signature Bank sparked a deposit run at First Republic. FDIC bank failure probes can take years.

How can you not keep the federal funds rate higher for longer when you get a U.S. GDP number that surpasses the real GDP of China. He sees the three Oreos taken out of the bag and the higher price nonetheless. The average person hurt by higher rates is collateral damage to the greater anti-inflation mission. All the market has to do is reach a price level that is too darned compelling. And who says we won't see higher rates until the horizon is at last upon us?

Following the bank closings, many other regional banks have had to pay higher interest rates on deposits in order to prevent customers from heading towards the exit. Comerica saw declines in both provisions and net interest income and a 28% decline in net income compared to last year. Zions Bancorp had a dramatic decline as well, seeing yearly declines in net interest income and provisions. Going forward, if demand for loans dries up, that gets rid of a key source of income for regional banks. The SPDR S&P Regional Banking ETF, a benchmark for judging the performance of shares of regional banks, was down 2.9% over five days as of midday trading on Friday.

That’s because many big banks have been playing a ‘do as I say, not as I do’ game with customers. Many large bricks-and-mortar banks pay even less—Wells Fargo, for example, pays 0.15% on its standard savings account while JP Morgan Chase pays 0.01%. Evergreen Bank—a locally-owned bank serving the Chicago suburbs—is currently offering a 5.25% APY on savings accounts, one of the best savings account rates for October. JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon sounded the alarm on a series of risks looming over global markets. "This may be the most dangerous time the world has seen in decades," Jamie Dimon said in a JPMorgan earnings press release. Dimon also reiterated concerns of higher interest rates to come, having previously noted 7% levels as a real possibility. Added to that is growing US debt, which has drawn increasing criticism for its potential to worsen interest rates and eventually lead to fallout, if left unchecked. Despite Dimon's concerns, JPMorgan's reported strong third-quarter results, helped by higher interest rates and its acquisition of First Republic Bank earlier this year.

Metro Bank: Shares in UK bank just plunged over 30%

London CNN —Shares in UK lender Metro Bank sank as much as 31% Thursday following a report that it was urgently seeking to raise funds to shore up its finances. Metro Bank opened in 2010 as the first challenger to Britain’s major main street banks — including Lloyds (LYG), Barclays (BCS) and HSBC (HSBC) — in more than 100 years. Metro Bank’s assurances did little to support its share price, which pared some of its earlier losses but was down by 31% again by late afternoon in London. The bank’s shares are down almost 66% since mid-September when UK regulators refused its request to change the way it calculates capital requirements on its residential mortgages book. Bitcoin and gold are "critical hedges" against the potential for monetary policy that reduces the value of currency, as well as the return of inflation, Jefferies says. Wood emphasized that investments in both bitcoin and gold should be viewed by investors as insurance rather than short-term trades. Jefferies recommends a 10% allocation to bitcoin for U.S. dollar-based long-term global investors, such as pension funds. Alongside physical gold and unhedged gold mining stocks and Asia equities, Jefferies has added bitcoin to this global portfolio in the past couple of years. This year, the firm introduced a global long-only equity portfolio that includes a 3% weighing in the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) .

New York CNN —JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon is raising the specter of the war on inflation getting worse before it gets better. The comments added to ongoing nervousness on Wall Street, which has been fueled in large part by concerns about the Fed keeping interest rates high for longer. Since early last year, the Fed has rapidly raised interest rates from near zero to just over 5%. If they are going to have lower volumes and higher rates, there will be stress in the system,” Dimon said. Last week, Fed officials released projections that pencil in just one more interest rate hike this year before rate cuts next year.

The bank laid off about 3,200 people earlier this year in its biggest headcount reduction since the 2008 financial crisis. First Republic was subsequently seized by the FDIC and most of its assets sold to JPMorgan Chase. Similarly, the FDIC found in its April post-mortem of the Signature failure that the agency lacked resources to properly supervise the bank as management pursued an overly aggressive growth strategy. “Both regulation and supervision must be strengthened,” said CEO Dennis Kelleher of Better Markets, a group favoring tougher regulation, in response to the report.

REUTERS/Jason Reed/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Sept 7 (Reuters) - U.S. bank profits were largely flat in the second quarter of 2023 after accounting for the impact of three large failed bank acquisitions, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation reported Thursday. The bank regulator said industry profits dipped 11.3% to $70.8 billion in the second quarter, but that was primarily due to the impact of the bank failures and ensuing acquisitions. Accounting for those events, bank profits were up 5.7% compared to a year prior. The FDIC said banks saw unrealized deposits on securities increase 8.3% in the second quarter, rising to $558.4 billion. ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, long a proponent of cutting interest rates, now supports his advisers’ economic plan that includes raising rates, a member of his economic team said Thursday. In a theory that runs contrary to traditional economic thinking, Erdogan has long pressured Turkey's central bank governors to lower rates. After winning reelection in May, however, Erdogan appointed a new economic team, including two accomplished bankers, signaling a turn to more conventional policies. How big banks won the banking crisis

Before the Bell: Now that the dust is hopefully settling on this year’s regional banking crisis, are there clear winners and losers in the banking sector? David Kotok: There’s no question the [global systemically important banks, G-SIB] won and the middle-sized banks — let’s call that banks with between $50 billion and $250 billion in assets — were the losers. So if you stand back from the immediate 2023 banking crisis, and you say, how many banks were there 20 years ago in the United States, how many banks are there today? The UK economy is bigger than we thoughtThe UK economy recovered from the Covid-19 pandemic much faster than previously thought, reports my colleague Hanna Ziady. For many office workers around the United States, it also means more return-to-office mandates.

It follows a tumultuous spring for regional banks in which Silicon Valley Bank and two other lenders collapsed, forcing regulators to backstop deposits to stave off a broader panic. The proposal, which is subject to industry feedback, would see banks raise their long-term debt issuance by roughly 25%, or $70 billion, according to the FDIC. The agency said banks would have three years from the rule's adoption to meet the new standard. 'COMPELLING CASE'Each bank's debt requirement will be based on their risk-weighted assets, total assets, or total leverage, depending on which number is highest. In a speech previewing the proposals this month, Gruenberg said recent bank failures made "a compelling case" for regulators to impose tougher rules on regional firms.

The new requirement would bring large regional banks more in line with the largest global banks, which already have their own debt requirement. The proposal follows a tumultuous spring for regional banks, which saw three collapse, forcing regulators to backstop deposits to stave off a broader panic. The proposal would mean banks have to raise their long-term debt issuance by roughly 25%, or $70 billion, according to the FDIC. “These banks will have to go into the market issuing capital to meet the capital proposal and then issuing long-term debt to meet the long-term debt proposal," said Matthew Bisanz, a partner at Mayer Brown. The proposed rules were approved by the FDIC at a meeting Tuesday, giving the industry the opportunity to critique the approach.

REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Aug 29 (Reuters) - A top U.S. banking regulator is set on Tuesday to propose heightened rules to ensure regional banks can be safely dissolved in times of stress. Now, regulators are looking to toughen their rules, particularly for regional banks like PNC Financial Services Group Inc and Citizens Financial Group Inc."The failure of three large regional banks this spring...demonstrated clearly the risk to financial stability that large regional banks can pose," said FDIC Chairman Martin Gruenberg in a speech earlier this month previewing the proposals. The regulator is also set to propose an overhaul to "living will" rules for banks, which require firms to detail how they could be safely taken apart after failing. As banks failed last spring, the FDIC was unable to find immediate buyers for some firms, such as Silicon Valley Bank. The banking industry is already pushing back against the upcoming proposal and similar efforts, calling them unjustified and economically harmful.
