The final three-month stretch of 2024 is here, and Wall Street is riding high. RBC head of derivatives strategy Amy Wu Silverman noted her clients are bracing for "3 standard-deviation drawdowns" in coming weeks. The VVIX gauges the volatility of the Cboe Volatility Index (VIX) itself — seen by many as Wall Street's preferred measurement of how much investor fear is in the market. That … is a very different narrative from the first six months of this year," Wu Silverman added. Elsewhere on Wall Street this morning, Pivotal Research Group initiated analyst coverage of Alphabet , the parent of Google and YouTube, with a buy rating.

Although Tarr’s ambition may have been to meet women, the success of Operation Match ironically kept him too busy to date. In fact, while Operation Match was a hugely influential moment in dating history, it wasn’t the first known online dating service. That honor goes to Joan Ball, a woman from the UK who started the St. James Computer Dating Service, later Com-Pat (get it?). Her program made its first match in 1964, a year before Operation Match went online. Operation Match was an inspiration for Dateline in the seventies and eighties, before big business computer dating began in 1995 with the birth of Match.com.

New York CNN —Elon Musk is using his social media platform to promote misinformation about the presidential candidates in the lead up to the November election, amplifying false claims Wednesday about a Trump rally bomb threat and immigrants eating pets in Ohio. Then on Wednesday, Musk reshared a bogus claim that a bomb had been discovered near the site of a planned Trump rally in Long Island. Musk’s own post has been earmarked with a crowd-sourced “community notes” fact-check that makes clear the claim was false. X did not respond to a CNN request for comment Wednesday on Musk’s posts. Musk is far from the only figure spreading false information on the platform, though he is easily one of its biggest voices.

New York CNN —Sam’s Club said Tuesday it will raise pay to incentivize workers to stay with the company — and not jump ship to Costco. Sam’s Club, the membership club arm of Walmart, will increase its minimum wage to $16 starting in November from $15 an hour. To keep and grow its membership, Sam’s Club must meet a higher bar for customer service than retailers open to everyone. “The thing that we’re trying to do here is create good jobs that turn into great careers,” Sam’s Club CEO Chris Nicholas told CNN. Still, morale may be Ukraine’s only hope in Pokrovsk as Russian forces zero in on the town. Russian forces are only 8 kilometers (5 miles) away, according to a map dated September 10 from DeepState, a group that monitors the progress of Russian forces in Ukraine that has links to Ukraine’s security services. Pokrovsk is coming under increasingly heavy bombardment by Russian forces as they advance as close as 8km to the town. CNNPokrovsk is a vital supply town for eastern Ukrainian forces fighting back the tides of Russian soldiers. The long-awaited Google-DOJ showdown focuses on the $31 billion portion of Google’s ad business that matches website publishers with advertisers. “One monopoly is bad enough, but a trifecta of monopolies is what we have here,” said Wood, the DOJ attorney, referring to Google’s publisher ad server business, its advertising exchange AdX, and its advertiser ad network. Authorities have called for that group of businesses within Google — which is distinct from Google’s search or search ads business — to be broken up. Factoring in those other sources of competition drops Google’s share of the ad exchange market from 34% to 17%, said Dunn, Google’s attorney. Still, a breakup of Google’s ad tech business could potentially trigger a shakeup of the digital advertising industry and Google’s role within it.

How to increase your attention span amid digital overload

While a dwindling attention span is not due to a personal failing (despite individual variability) a majority of the time, experts say there are changes you can make to regain control over your mind. “Tech companies and ad marketing companies use this information to construct profiles about us, and then they design algorithms that are targeted to capture our attention,” Mark said. “We have a tank of attentional resources (that) gets drained when we keep switching our attention,” Mark said. Additionally, he suggested using an app that places time limits on social media or websites you find yourself addicted to using. “The way I feel at the moment is like somebody is pouring itching powder over us all day,” Hari said.

EV fast chargers – the big tall units that look like major appliances – aren’t generally designed to completely fill an EV’s batteries. A line of EVs wait to charge at Electrify America chargers in East Brunswick, New Jersey, on July 6. At 10 of the busiest EV fast charging stations in California, Electrify America has enacted a strict limit. There can also be other legitimate reasons a driver may want to charge to 100% at a fast charger, said Barrosa. Cases like these are why Electrify America probably won’t institute an overall charging cap at charging stations near major highways, he said.

Potential tattle-tales can share tips on possible faux Ferrari goods on a web page Ferrari created just for the purpose. How to fake a carWhile creating fake merchandise can be a simple matter of placing an unlicensed Ferrari prancing horse logo on a product, producing a believable fake Ferrari car can be much more involved. “Generally, the Ferrari collector tends to have a considerable knowledge over the brand as a whole and its cars, especially the most valuable ones,” said the spokesperson. As an example of the fate that awaits any fake Ferrari automobiles the company can find, Ferrari published a photo of a red car squished into a crinkled metal cube.

SeongJoon Cho/Bloomberg via Getty ImagesThe U.S. Federal Reserve may start cutting interest rates before year's end. How interest rates impact the U.S. dollarIn reality, the dynamics driving dollar fluctuations are more complex than whether the Fed raises or lowers interest rates. The European Central Bank cut interest rates in June, for example. This is happening against the backdrop of a relatively strong U.S. economy, which also generally supports a strong dollar, Petersen said. For example, investors generally get a better return on cash when interest rates are high.
