WASHINGTON — House Speaker Mike Johnson and other top Republicans are calling for the resignation of Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle days after a gunman tried to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally. FBI Director Christopher Wray, Deputy Director Paul Abbate, as well as Secret Service Deputy Director Ronald Rowe are on the list of briefers. The most critical, perhaps, is why was the roof of a building within 150 yards of Trump was not secured by the Secret Service or local law enforcement. They also want to know why Secret Service snipers on another roof in the area didn't engage the shooter until after Crooks had fired multiple times. I am the director of the Secret Service."

CNN —Thomas Matthew Crooks visited the Donald Trump rally location twice, his cell phone contained images of both Trump and President Joe Biden, and the would-be assassin’s search history included dates of the Democratic National Convention as well as future Trump events, three US officials told CNN. A US official briefed on the matter, however, later told CNN that investigators believe the account in his name is fake. Secret Service agents killed Crooks after he opened fire. The Secret Service director later offered to answer the senators’ questions at another time and moved to leave. For a third night, thousands of Republican delegates, donors and party leaders crowded into the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee to celebrate former President Donald J. Brendan Smialowski | Afp | Getty ImagesA second presidential term for former President Donald Trump could reignite global inflation as his America-first policies drive up costs across the world, analysts warned. "The level of inflation is higher, inflation expectations are higher, and we're still in this inflation mindset." A recent poll of economists suggested, however, that the majority see inflation ticking higher under Trump due to his hard-line protectionist stance. watch nowThat higher inflation could spill over into Asia, too, Nomura's Gareth Nicholson said in a note to CNBC. In Europe, Goldman Sachs predicted in a Friday note that a Trump presidency could add a 0.1 percentage point increase to inflation as higher tariffs weigh on global trade.

Left-leaning demonstrators had been preparing for months to march through downtown Milwaukee at the start of the Republican National Convention on Monday. The attempted assassination of former President Donald J. Trump on Saturday, protest organizers said, would not change those plans. Republican Party leaders said that Mr. Trump would still accept the nomination in person on Thursday. And protesters, a consistent presence at national political conventions, said they would be there, too. Mr. Flores said that his group intended to come “within sight and sound” of Fiserv Forum, the main convention hall.

Read previewThe Secret Service can't ban guns near the Republican National Convention following an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump — but convention-goers shouldn't spend their time worrying about a copycat attempt, one gun violence expert told Business Insider. The incident resulted in a flurry of criticism directed at the Secret Service and concerns about the safety of the former president and attendees at the RNC. AdvertisementThe Secret Service safety planThe Secret Service released its RNC safety plan in June, detailing how several blocks around the Fiserv Forum will be cordoned off in two perimeters: an outer perimeter and an inner perimeter only accessible to pedestrians. Related storiesAttendees in the inner perimeter will be barred from bringing in guns — though guns will still be allowed outside. The Secret Service announced that guns would be allowed outside the red zone due to Wisconsin's gun laws.

CNN —The US Secret Service on Friday laid out the security measures for the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee next month, including a perimeter that will prevent protesters from gathering at a large park near the venue. The RNC convention will take place at the Fiserv Forum, upper right, just a few blocks northwest of Pere Marquette Park in Milwaukee, as seen on May 14, 2024. Mike De Sisti/The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel/USA Today NetworkFriday’s announcement comes after a monthslong dispute between the Secret Service and the GOP over security measures around the convention, which will take place from July 15 to 18. The party had accused the agency of ignoring its concerns, while the Secret Service said Republicans were undermining efforts to keep the event safe. In April, Republican National Committee counsel Todd Steggerda sent a letter asking the Secret Service to keep protesters farther back from the convention than what had been planned at the time.

Milwaukee based department store giant Kohl's says it will not sponsor any events related to the Republican National Convention in that city this summer, where Donald Trump will be crowned the party's nominee for president. Northwestern Mutual is on the host committee and its CEO John Schlifske is reportedly helping to raise money for the group. Major corporations often don't want to seem like they're taking one side politically, so they either sponsor both conventions, or neither. Conventions could see new sponsorsThe Democratic and Republican conventions this summer are the first fully in-person conventions since the 2016 election. Democratic convention organizers in April said if corporations had any reluctance to back the RNC, it hasn't hampered Chicago's efforts to lure donors. The Torray Fund , founded by the late Robert Torray in 1990, is ahead 7.4% so far this year, outpacing the 6.5% gain in the S & P 500. Apart from the Torray Fund, the firm manages four other concentrated portfolios that also hold between 20 and 30 companies. It's a chess move by one of the savviest long-term thinkers in American finance, Capital One CEO Richard Fairbank. Fairbank, who became a billionaire by building Capital One into a credit card giant since its 1994 IPO, is betting that buying rival card company Discover will better position the company for global payments' murky future. The deal, if approved, enables Capital One to leapfrog JPMorgan as the biggest credit card company by loans, and solidifies its position as the third largest by purchase volume. By 2027, the bank expects to add at least $175 billion in payments and 25 million of its cardholders onto the Discover network. A bullish options bet on a rallying fintech into earnings

Nevertheless, we're going to take advantage of lower- than-average longer-dated options premiums in an e-commerce payment services company to frame a modestly bullish bet going into earnings. Companies might beat earnings expectations but still see their stock price fall due to other factors like future earnings guidance, revenue quality, or broader market conditions. Guidance: Companies often provide forward-looking statements or guidance about future earnings and performance during their earnings calls, which can have an immediate and unpredictable impact on their stock price. Analyst expectations: The market's reaction can be more about how the actual earnings compare to analyst expectations rather than the earnings themselves. In some cases though, the options market is not anticipating particularly sharp moves, and this may present an opportunity.
