Federal ethics laws require those senior government jobs in the Cabinet and beyond to divest their individual stock holdings, lest anyone be tempted to abuse their position of power to juice their personal investments. “The rule of thumb is, recuse or divest,” said Jordan Libowitz, vice president for communications at Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, or CREW. “The more complex your assets are, the harder it can be to divest from them. Although the president isn’t subject to conflict of interest laws, most presidents have adhered to them anyway to avoid any appearance of impropriety. Given Trump’s own disregard for ethics rules, it’s not clear how, or even whether, his Justice Department would enforce the criminal conflict of interest laws that his Cabinet picks are subject to.

CNN —The US Department of Justice threw even more doubt into a new way of paying for real estate brokers this week, raising concerns about a recent wide-ranging legal settlement. The new rules included in the settlement represented the biggest upheaval to the US real estate market in a century, sowing worry among real estate professionals. The NAR settlement was originally announced in March, and the new rules took effect in mid-August. “This is an important moment for NAR members, home buyers and sellers, and the real estate industry,” said NAR President Kevin Sears in a statement about the settlement approval. Rob Crawford, the owner of Florida real estate firm Loch Realty, said he has heard of real estate brokerages weighing whether to leave the organization.

AP —Baseball star Shohei Ohtani wants his former interpreter to hand over hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of baseball cards he says were fraudulently bought using his money. The legal filing alleges Mizuhara accessed Ohtani’s bank account beginning around November 2021, changing his security protocols so that he could impersonate him to authorize wire transfers. A judge on Wednesday found New York City in contempt for failing to staunch violence and brutality at its jails, a scathing ruling that puts the troubled Rikers Island jail complex on the verge of a federal takeover. It would not involve a takeover by the Justice Department, nor would the city’s jails become part of the federal Bureau of Prisons. Nineteen people died in custody at Rikers Island in 2022. There has been “no substantial reduction in the risk of harm currently facing those who live and work in the Rikers Island jails,” the judge wrote. Under a plan approved by the city council in 2019, New York City is legally required to shutter Rikers Island and replace it with four smaller and more modern jails by 2027.

An Arizona man has been arrested after he allegedly posted videos online that showed him brandishing an AR-15-style rifle and threatening to kill President-elect Donald Trump and members of Trump's family, authorities said. Manuel Tamayo-Torres posted videos on a "near-daily basis" in which he accused Trump and the president-elect's family members of kidnapping and sex-trafficking his children, according to charging documents filed in federal court in Arizona. The documents don't identify Trump by name but they describe "Individual 1" as a former president and current president-elect. Tamayo-Torres also posted a video on Nov. 21, saying Trump's "whole family is going to die," according to the charging documents.
