WASHINGTON, Jan 5 (Reuters) - The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said Thursday it had named 24 experts to review Boeing’s safety management processes and how they influence Boeing’s safety culture after two fatal 737 MAX crashes killed 346 people. Boeing did not immediately comment Thursday, but has previously emphasized it has made reforms to its safety culture that cost the company billions of dollars. In September, the FAA finalized a policy to protect aviation employees who perform government certification duties from interference by Boeing and others. In May, the FAA opted to renew Boeing's Organization Designation Authorization (ODA) program for three years rather than the five years Boeing sought. The FAA continues to subject Boeing to enhanced oversight, inspecting all new Boeing 737 MAXs and 787s before they can be delivered.
FedEx and United Parcel Service warned that packages could be delayed as a massive winter storm brought high winds, bitter cold and snow to large swaths of the U.S. ahead of Christmas weekend. The severe weather was already snarling air travel during what is expected to be a busy week for airlines. "FedEx Express experienced substantial disruptions at our Memphis and Indianapolis hubs last night due to severe winter weather that has been moving across the United States," FedEx said Friday. It said packages set for delivery on Friday and Saturday, which is Christmas Eve, could be delayed across the U.S.UPS said severe weather "across several regions of the U.S. are impacting the UPS Air and Ground network, including UPS hubs in Louisville, Kentucky and Rockford, Illinois. As a result, some delivery and pickup services in these areas will be affected."
FedEx's advisory said winter weather could affect shipments going through the company's Indianapolis and Memphis air hubs. "Potential service disruptions may not affect FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, FedEx Freight, FedEx Office, etc. UPS announced that severe winter weather is already affecting deliveries in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska — 314 zip codes in all. Though the weather system will be felt by most Americans Friday, some delivery drivers have already experienced snowy and icy conditions. At least one UPS and one FedEx Ground driver posted on Reddit photos of trucks stuck in snowy drifts.

Job openings dipped in October amid the Federal Reserve's efforts to cool off a red-hot employment market, the Labor Department reported Wednesday. The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, a closely watched gauge of slack in the labor force, showed there were 10.3 million vacancies for the month. That left 1.7 job openings per available worker for the month, down from a 2 to 1 ratio just a few months ago. The report came the same day that payroll processing firm ADP reported job gains of just 127,000 in November, the lowest total since January. Economists expect job growth of 200,00 for the month, according to Dow Jones estimates.
FedEx announced Thursday it was raising prices for all of its consumer delivery services an average of 6.9% effective Jan. 2. FedEx Freight rates, meanwhile, will increase by an average of 6.9% to 7.9%. The shipping giant recently missed earnings expectations and announced significant cost-cutting measures as it warned of a global economic slowdown. "We regularly evaluate our shipping rates and fees and adjust them when needed," the company said on its website. Postal Service announced a holiday rate increase, with priority mail rates set to increase $0.95.

Online sales started fizzling during last year's peak delivery season from Thanksgiving weekend through the end of the year. That could outpace peak season demand by 18 million packages per day, according to Satish Jindel, a consultant whose holiday peak volume forecasts are closely watched by delivery firms. During the 2020 and 2021 holiday peak delivery seasons, demand outstripped capacity by 7.2 million and 1.3 million packages per day, respectively, Jindel said.
