Elon Musk and Grimes are trying to figure out where he should be deposed in their custody dispute. Musk's lawyers requested an "secured location" in Austin, Texas, for the videotaped deposition. Two lawyers told Insider Musk likely had security concerns about doing it at a more public location. Lawyers for Musk and Grimes did not respond to Insider's requests for comment. Meaning, Grimes and Musk could spend months just trying to prove which state their kids actually live in.

What Is a Covenant Marriage?
  + stars: | 2023-11-03 | by ( Alyson Krueger | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
But with a covenant marriage, there are stricter guidelines for ending a marriage. Revelations concerning Mike Johnson, the new speaker of the House, and his own covenant marriage have brought the unconventional commitment arrangement into the spotlight. Covenant marriages are legally binding contracts or agreements between two people who have the intent to live together for the rest of their lives. Unlike traditional marriages, covenant marriages come with additional requirements, and ending one through divorce is more challenging. Traditional marriage allows a couple to enter the union by filling out a marriage license (among other state requirements), but with a covenant marriage, which is often rooted in religious or moral convictions, the couple must complete premarital counseling with a clergyman or therapist ahead of time.

India awaits top court verdict on same-sex marriages

REUTERS/Francis Mascarenhas/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW DELHI, Oct 16 (Reuters) - India's top court will deliver a verdict on Tuesday on granting legal recognition to same-sex marriages, a ruling that has the potential to spark momentous changes in the world's most populous country. The case is seen as a milestone event for LGBTQ rights in India, following a historic 2018 judgement by the Supreme Court that scrapped a colonial-era ban on gay sex. A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by the Chief Justice of India heard arguments in the case between April and May and reserved its order on May 11. The Supreme Court website showed late on Monday that the verdict is due to be pronounced on Tuesday. Members of India's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community (LGBTQ) say they face discrimination despite the 2018 judgement, and that the absence of legal backing for same-sex marriages violates their constitutional rights.

Claire Boucher, better known as Grimes, asked a Texas judge to throw out Elon Musk's custody case. The musical artist Grimes has asked a Texas judge to throw out Elon Musk 's child-custody lawsuit filed last month, saying the case belongs in California, not Austin. In Musk's lawsuit , he claimed they lived together in Texas as recently as July 2023. He splits his time between six companies — with his private jets sometimes making multiple trips between Texas and California within a week. The lawsuit isn't the first sign of conflict between Musk and Grimes.

If the case turns into a child support battle, Musk would be better off if it plays out in Texas. The jurisdiction will come down to who can prove where the kids actually live, Texas or California. It's unclear what either party's ultimate goal is, whether it is related to physical custody, legal custody, child support, or some other issue. Texas caps monthly child support payments at $1,840 for one child, or $2,760 for three children, which is how many Musk and Grimes share. Many factors go into calculating child support payments in California, including net disposable income, but it ultimately comes down to the judge to decide.

Grimes is seeking physical custody of her and Elon Musk's three kids, according to court documents. AdvertisementAdvertisementGrimes is suing Elon Musk and asking for physical custody of the three children they share, according to court records obtained by Insider. Grimes, whose legal name is Claire Boucher, is seeking physical custody of her and Musk's kids — 3-year-old X and 1-year-olds Exa and Tau — as well as joint legal custody. Grimes' lawsuit also requests that Musk's suit be thrown out. Differentiating legal custody and physical custody allows parents to share decision-making and rights of access to the kids without an equal custody split, Davis said.

There is no state or federal law that requires DNA testing to establish paternity in the United States, despite online posts that claim various states have implemented new laws mandating that fathers submit a DNA test before signing a birth certificate. However, in no U.S. state is it mandatory for a father to establish his paternity via DNA testing. All states allow nonmarital fathers to establish their parentage without genetic testing by completing a voluntary acknowledgement of paternity form when the child is born. Family law experts said a father would only be subject to DNA testing if parentage were being determined as part of court proceedings. No U.S. states have implemented new laws requiring fathers to establish paternity via DNA testing.

WASHINGTON, Aug 15 (Reuters) - The indictment of Former President Donald Trump for interfering in the 2020 presidential election in Georgia will be the biggest case of prosecutor Fani Willis' career, but it will not be her first contentious prosecution. “She’s not afraid of big cases,” said Gerald Griggs, a criminal defense attorney and president of the Georgia state conference of the NAACP. Willis worked from 2001 to 2018 in the Fulton County prosecutor's office, then won election as county prosecutor in 2020, defeating her former boss, Paul Howard. Willis campaigned on building leniency programs for some low-level offenders, but also adopted a hard line on violent crime and gang activity. “Anybody that thinks they can unleash insults from a podium and that’s going to shake Fani Willis is sorely mistaken."

Borniakova, an alleged victim of domestic violence by her husband, died in January, her body badly bruised. Registered cases of domestic violence in Ukraine initially fell after Russia invaded in February 2022, as millions of people fled the fighting. The office created a unit to oversee domestic violence court procedures in February, Usenko said. "If we can at least get a charge of domestic violence it will be a victory," Seheda said, adding that there was still a view among some judges and police officers that domestic violence was a private matter to be settled between a couple. She said an increase in registered domestic violence cases was partly a reflection that police are giving more attention to the issue.

How El Chapo’s sons built a fentanyl empire poisoning America
  + stars: | 2023-05-09 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +23 min
Headed by Iván, El Chapo’s oldest son, the siblings have emerged as key figures in the Sinaloa Cartel, U.S. and Mexican anti-narcotics officials said. But he was killed in 2008 in Culiacán in a hail of bullets amid infighting between warring factions of the Sinaloa Cartel. The agency in April placed Iván on the list of its 10 Most Wanted Fugitives, joining Jesús Alfredo and Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, a Sinaloa Cartel legend and El Chapo’s alleged former business partner. They also kidnapped eight soldiers and surrounded military housing where wives and children of Mexican soldiers lived, Mexican officials said. Despite that blow to the Sinaloa Cartel, fentanyl keeps flowing north.
MEXICO CITY, May 4 (Reuters) - Sons of former Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman denied U.S. allegations that they were major traffickers flooding the United States with synthetic opioid fentanyl, addressing the claims against them in a rare letter. The U.S. Justice Department last month charged leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel with trafficking fentanyl and other drugs, including four sons of El Chapo, the cartel's one time leader who is now imprisoned in the U.S. "We have never produced, manufactured or marketed fentanyl or any of its derivatives," the sons wrote in the letter, published by Mexican news outlet Milenio late on Wednesday. They also singled out Los Chapitos as key figures in the Sinaloa Cartel, blaming them for worsening the U.S. opioid epidemic. Mexico and the United States agreed last month to ramp up efforts to stop the trafficking of fentanyl, which has driven a surge in overdose deaths in the United States.
The daughter of a Vatican usher whose family lived in the Vatican, Orlandi, then 15, failed to return home on June 22, 1983 following a music lesson in Rome. The case, which has been the subject of on-and-off investigations in Italy and the Vatican, has drawn fresh worldwide attention following the release late last year of the Netflix series "Vatican Girl". In January, Vatican chief prosecutor Alessandro Diddi reopened a previous inconclusive Vatican investigation after he inherited files from his retired predecessor. Emanuela's older brother Pietro and the family lawyer, Laura Sgro, were meeting with Diddi in the Vatican on Tuesday afternoon. In an interview in Corriere della Sera ahead of the meeting, Diddi said Pope Francis wants "the truth to emerge without any reservations".
