A federal judge ruled Monday that a volleyball player for the San Jose State University women's team, who is at the center of controversy about transgender athletes, can compete in this week's conference tournament. Judge S. Kato Crews, with the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado, denied the emergency motion for a preliminary injunction filed this month against the Mountain West Conference. "San José State University will continue to support its student-athletes and reject discrimination in all forms," the university said said. "All San José State University student-athletes are eligible to participate in their sports under NCAA and Mountain West Conference rules." EU challenges Chinese brandy tariffs at WTO

The EU Commission said on Monday it had formally brought the provisional anti-dumping measures imposed by China on imports of EU brandy to the World Trade Organization, the latest development amid trade tensions between the two blocs. France's trade ministry said last month it would work with the European Commission to challenge Beijing's tariffs, which came after the European Union voted for duties on Chinese-made electric vehicles. China's commerce ministry said it had received an EU consultation request and would handle the matter according to WTO rules. France, whose producers including LVMH , Remy Cointreau and PernodRicard , export huge amounts of spirits to the Asian country, was seen as the main targets of the brandy tariffs following Paris's outspoken support of the Commission's efforts to protect the domestic EV market. French brandy shipments to China reached $1.7 billion last year and made up 99% of China's imports of the drink.

Conventional wisdom holds that Musk — the world’s richest man and key Donald Trump ally — and his friends are just joking. But Musk’s posts are adding to the anxiety that MSNBC staffers are feeling about the reelection of Donald Trump and the recently announced spinoff of Comcast’s cable channels. I learned that more than one benevolent billionaire with liberal bonafides has already reached out to acquaintances at MSNBC to express interest in buying the cable channel. Instead, he is moving MSNBC and a half dozen other cable channels into “SpinCo,” a pure-play cable programming company. I have sensed quite a bit of enthusiasm at MSNBC about “SpinCo,” actually, because the new structure should allow for more investment into MSNBC, CNBC and the other brands.

However, the rookie guard has since played a very limited role in the NBA and was assigned to the team’s G League South Bay Lakers squad earlier this month. The S & P 500's rise to fresh heights in the new year will not be in a straight line, according to RBC Capital Markets. Strategist Lori Calvasina issued a year-end 2025 target for the broad market index of 6,600. The S & P 500 has rallied 3.2% since Donald Trump secured a second presidential term, raising expectations of lower taxes and deregulation. To be sure, Calvasina thinks there will be 5%-10% correction in the near term before equities resume their march to all-time highs. Last week, Goldman Sachs set a 6,500 target for the S & P 500, while BMO issued a forecast for the benchmark index to surge all the way to 6,700 .

The election victory by Donald Trump and his Republican Party was a rebuke of a Democratic Party that has positioned itself as protector of a despised status quo, rendering it unable to connect with an electorate desperate for change. Defeating Mr. Trump in the future will require liberals, progressives and others on the left to articulate a positive vision that can capture the imagination of a broad majority of Americans. But where can they find the inspiration for such a vision? The answer lies in the work of the towering 20th century political philosopher John Rawls. The philosophy of Rawls, who died in 2002, is grounded not in self-interest and competition, but in reciprocity and cooperation.

For most art-world buyers, a work unsubtly called “Comedian” lacked a certain a-peel. But on Wednesday, Cattelan got the last laugh as “Comedian” sold for $6.24 million, including $1 million in fees. The buyer was soon revealed to be Justin Sun, a 34-year old cryptocurrency platform founder from China and based in Switzerland. And while some who have capitalized on those assets will inevitably purchase art, artworks themselves have their own rates of return that depend more on evolutions in taste that don’t correlate with wider macroeconomic trends. Sun, the “Comedian” buyer, used his own cryptocurrency, TRX, to make the purchase, Sotheby’s said.

This week, Vanity Fair published a bombshell article revealing that Cormac McCarthy, one of the country’s most celebrated and enigmatic novelists, had a relationship with a girl he met when he was 42 and she was 16, a foster child who felt so unsafe at home she often carried a gun and used the pool area at the motel where he was staying to shower. The revelations in the article stunned many fans of the famously inscrutable author, but did not come as a surprise to close friends of McCarthy’s or the tight-knit community of scholars who have studied his life and work. McCarthy’s relationship with Augusta Britt lasted nearly until his death in 2023, and came up in his letters over the years. Dianne C. Luce, who has written several books about McCarthy, said she and another McCarthy scholar, Edwin T. Arnold, learned about McCarthy’s relationship with Britt around 40 years ago, during an interview with a friend of McCarthy’s. Over the years, she saw the relationship come up in the author’s letters to his literary friends, among them Robert Coles, Guy Davenport and Mark Morrow.

Currently, individuals and married couples can gift or bequeath $13.61 million and $27.22 million, respectively, before a 40% federal estate tax kicks in. AdvertisementThe heirs don't own the trust assets but rather have lifetime rights to the trust's income and real estate. Any payout is also protected from estate taxes, even if the insured's estate and death benefit exceed the exemption. AdvertisementThis tactic can also be used to save on estate taxes by ultra-rich entrepreneurs who have already used their exemption but have less-wealthy parents who haven't. When the children inherit the assets, the federal estate tax doesn't kick in as long as the grandparents' estate does not exceed $27.22 million.

London's historic art scene is getting a tech upgrade

The United Kingdom's historic art scene has embraced technology such as artificial intelligence, as it evolves to compete with growing markets such as China. While the United States and China hold the number one and two spots respectively, the U.K.'s contribution to the art market is nothing to be sniffed at – holding 17% of the global share, according to the Art Basel and UBS Art Market Report. London is widely regarded as the art hub of Europe, and its biggest art fair, Frieze, boasted 90,000 visitors in 2024. Within the art world, it's been sort of bubbling away, burning away for a while, and it's suddenly caught fire," said Henry Highley, Head of European Private Sales for Phillips. Also, the report noted, since 2021, accusations of officer misconduct has cost the city more than $7 million to resolve lawsuits. “When police stop someone in Trenton, our investigation found that all too often they violated the constitutional rights of those they stopped, sometimes with tragic consequences. “Even prior to the USDOJ review, the City and the [Trenton Police Department] had already begun to change policies and practices that prioritize community safety, accountability, and respect for civil liberties.

Senate Republicans offered mixed responses Thursday to President-elect Donald Trump's announcement that he will nominate Pete Hegseth, a Fox News personality accused of sexual assault, to lead the Defense Department following the release of a police report concerning sexual assault allegations against him. Some senators defended Trump's pick, while others voiced some trepidation, and a senator told NBC News "I don't care" when approached about a police report released Wednesday tied to an allegation of sexual assault against Hegseth in 2017. Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., also defended Trump's pick, saying he had reviewed the report and would push for Hegseth's confirmation. Two other picks to serve in top jobs in Trump's Cabinet have also faced potentially damaging allegations of sexual misconduct. After Gaetz withdrew his name, Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., told NBC News that there were “similar, challenging allegations” with Hegseth.
