Sept 23 (Reuters) - Ford Motor (F.N) has offered Canadian union Unifor wage increases of up to 25% in its tentative agreement, the union said on Saturday. Unifor, which represents about 5,600 Canadian auto workers, on Friday said that its Ford leadership group has voted unanimously to support the tentative agreement. Ford is also in the midst of contract negotiations in the U.S. with a strike by the United Auto Workers (UAW) union at its at the automaker's Wayne, Michigan assembly plant. UAW President Shawn Fain said in a Facebook live event that by targeting distribution centers the strike becomes a nationwide event. A Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Thursday showed significant support by Americans for the striking auto workers.

UAW President Shawn Fain, in a Facebook live event, said that by targeting distribution centers the strike becomes a nationwide event. Stellantis has said it wants to be able to consolidate and close some of its parts distribution centers. Nearly 13,000 UAW workers walked out at plants in Missouri, Michigan and Ohio on Sept 15. "GM and Stellantis are looking at stockholder value and Ford is looking a lot more long-term that they have to make friends with labor." Fain said on Friday that the union had negotiated the elimination of lower wage tiers in some components facilities at Ford and GM.

"Stellantis and GM in particular are going to need some serious pushing," Fain said Friday. Fain said Ford had improved its contract offer, including boosting profit sharing and agreeing to let workers strike over plant closures but said the union still has "serious issues" with Ford. "This is like union 101 in terms of divide and conquer, and put more pressure on GM and Stellantis," Ives added. GM, Ford and Stellantis have said they are making contingency plans for further U.S. work stoppages. Unifor, which represents about 5,600 Canadian auto workers, had been threatening to go on strike at all three Ford plants in the country.

DETROIT – The United Auto Workers is expanding strikes to 38 parts and distribution locations across 20 states for General Motors and Stellantis , UAW President Shawn Fain said Friday morning. The union will not initiate additional strikes at Ford Motor , as the company has proven it's "serious about reaching a deal," Fain said during a Facebook Live. "We still have serious issues to work through, but we do want to recognize that Ford is showing that they're serious about reaching a deal," said the outspoken union leader. Fain said the union and Ford have made progress on issues including eliminating some wage tiers, reinstating cost-of-living adjustments and an improved profit-sharing formula. Ford said the company is "working diligently with the UAW to reach a deal," but "we still have significant gaps to close on the key economic issues."

Biden sided with the striking workers last Friday when the UAW launched its initial targeted strikes against three facilities in Michigan, Missouri and Ohio. President Joe Biden on Friday said he will visit Michigan next week to support strikes by the United Auto Workers. The president's announcement came hours after UAW boss Shawn Fain invited Biden to join the striking autoworkers. Record profits at Ford , General Motors and Stellantis "have not been shared fairly, in my view, with the workers," Biden said during a brief address. Instead, he aims to drive a wedge between striking UAW workers and union leaders like Fain. The UAW endorsed Biden's 2020 bid for the White House but has not yet backed his reelection campaign.

New York CNN —The United Auto Workers union is expanding its strike against GM and Stellantis but said that progress in negotiations with Ford means it won’t expand the number of Ford workers on the picket lines. “At noon Eastern today, all parts distributions centers at General Motors and Stellantis will be on strike,” he said. Still the announcement of progress at Ford raised hopes that the strike, at least at there, could be brought to a relatively quick end. But the UAW’s expanded strike is now targeting the parts distribution centers for GM and Stellantis. As of 10:30 am ET, Stellantis (STLA) is up 0.98%; Ford (F) is up 3.57%; and GM (GM) is up 0.7%.

UAW President Fain has taken an unorthodox approach to the negotiations, bargaining with all three Detroit automakers simultaneously. That six-week strike cost GM $3.6 billion and stressed the finances of UAW members. Targeted, or bottleneck, strikes are an alternative to national actions in which the union only strikes select plants. Targeted strikes typically focus on key plants that can then cause other plants to cease production due to a lack of parts. They include initiating targeted strikes at select plants and then potentially increasing the number of strikes based on the status of the negotiations. "We will strike all three companies, a historic first, initially at a limited number of targeted locations that we will be announcing. While "historic," the targeted strikes could have unintended ripple effects.

Ford CEO Jim Farley speaks with media after revealing the 2024 Ford F-150 for the Detroit auto show on Sept. 12, 2023. Farley said the company has received "no genuine counteroffer" on its four economic proposals, including the latest offer that Ford is calling the most generous offer ever between the UAW and company. He also said Fain, who is simultaneously negotiating with General Motors and Stellantis , was absent during a Tuesday meeting that he and Ford Chair Bill Ford expected Fain to attend. Public criticism between the union and an automaker aren't unprecedented but the amount of detail being released, announced strike plans and simultaneous bargaining certainly are. Farley said he didn't know Fain had received the offer until he was discussing it during a 5 p.m. Facebook Live with union members.

Here’s what to watch as the clock ticks down:Which plants would go on strike? One advantage of a targeted strike for the union is the potential to save resources and extend a possible walkout. Striking union members are eligible for $500 a week from the union’s strike fund. Ford has not had a national strike since 1976 and has not had a strike of any kind at its US plants since 1978. Sometimes after talks break down, the parties can return to the table and reach a deal without a strike.

"We are preparing to strike these companies in a way they have never seen before." Fain said the Detroit Three automakers had offered 146,000 U.S. autoworkers pay raises of as much as 20% over four and a half years but called the hikes inadequate. Coordinated strikes would mark the first-ever simultaneous labor stoppage at all three Detroit automakers and one of the largest U.S. industrial labor actions in recent years. The UAW is considering initially targeting only some specific plants for work stoppages at the Detroit automakers, two sources briefed on the matter said, adding the strike plan could still change. Targeting strategic plants could quickly force automakers to halt U.S. production and could extend the time before the UAW's $825 million strike fund is exhausted.

Barely 24 hours before the contract deadline, the United Auto Workers leader said Wednesday that his members were prepared for a strike against the three Detroit automakers — first at a limited number of factories, with the walkout expanding if talks remain bogged down. “September 14 is a deadline, not a reference point,” he declared in an address to union members on Facebook Live. He said the initial strike locations would be “limited and targeted,” and would be communicated to members on Thursday night ahead of a Friday walkout. This tactic — a departure from the union’s usual strategy of staging an all-out strike against a single automaker chosen as a target — is intended to give the U.A.W. negotiators increased leverage in the talks, and to keep the manufacturers off balance.

Michael Wayland / CNBCDETROIT — The United Auto Workers union plans to implement targeted strikes at certain plants against the Detroit automakers if tentative contracts are not reached with General Motors , Ford Motor and Stellantis , according to union officials briefed on the matter Tuesday night. Targeted strikes refer to work stoppages only at certain plants involving local contract issues that many, if not most, plants have. Conducting targeted strikes can be complex, as it's not clear how one plant will impact others. Targeted strikes will save the union cash, as they won't have to give "strike pay" to as many members from its $825 million strike fund.

DETROIT (AP) — Leaders of the United Auto Workers union are considering targeted strikes at a small number of factories run by each of Detroit's three automakers if they can't reach contract agreements by a Thursday night deadline. At the Tuesday meeting, Fain didn't say whether the union would target vehicle assembly plants or component factories, one of the people said. Strikes at parts plants could force production halts at multiple assembly factories. The union and companies have said they’re willing to talk in an effort to work out deals before the deadline. Yet there was optimism on both sides that they still could reach reach deals before the deadline.

Ford's annual filing showed about 57,000 of its hourly employees in the United States were represented by the UAW, while the UAW represents about 43,000 U.S. hourly workers at Stellantis. Stellantis last week offered its U.S. hourly workers a 14.5% wage hike over four years, but no lump sum payments. Fain also is aiming to get agreements that would allow the UAW to represent hourly workers at joint-venture EV battery plants opened or planned by the Detroit Three. In fiscal 2019, GM's fourth-quarter profit took a $3.6 billion hit from a 40-day UAW strike that shut down its profitable U.S. operations. Contract talks between the UAW and the Detroit automakers have gone to the strike deadline and beyond in years past. Stellantis said on Friday it offered U.S. hourly workers a 14.5% wage hike over four years but no lump sum payments. The UAW said the GM and Ford offers would change the formula for calculating profit-sharing, and if it had been in effect last year GM workers would have received 29% less and Ford workers 21%. A UAW strike that shuts the Detroit Three manufacturers could cost carmakers, suppliers and workers over $5 billion, the Michigan-based Anderson Economic Group estimated. GM recorded a $3.6 billion pre-tax loss in 2019 after UAW members went on strike for six weeks, the longest walkout against a Detroit automaker since 1970.
