Donald Trump's return to the White House sparked a big move higher in small-cap stocks. Small-cap stocks were seen as potential winners under a second Trump presidency, as investors expect it would ease regulations on businesses — which tend to weigh more heavily on smaller businesses. Wednesday's gains in small caps were led by private prison stocks Geo Group and CoreCivic , which were up roughly 20% each. Small-cap stocks have trailed their large-cap counterparts this year. Notably, small caps outperformed in the 3mos after both the Trump 2016 and Biden 2020 wins."

Generally, a Trump win is seen as positive for financials given a higher likelihood of deregulation for companies in the space. Traditional oil and gas names are also likely to benefit under a second Trump presidency. One is made up of stocks that benefit after a Harris win; the other would outperform under a second Trump presidency. However, a Harris win is expected to keep current regulation measures in place, and possibly introduce new ones. Private equity giants KKR and Blackstone would also benefit under a Trump win.

This undated image provided by Mark Longo shows him with his pet squirrel, Peanut. The state Department of Environmental Conservation took the animals Wednesday from Longo’s home and animal sanctuary in rural Pine City, near the Pennsylvania border. Longo has said he was working to get Peanut – also known as P’Nut or PNUT – certified as an educational animal. Longo said he started caring for Peanut after the animal’s mother was hit by a car in New York City seven years ago. After helping the animal recover from injuries, Longo said, he and his wife were planning to release the creature into the woods.

Peanut, the Instagram-famous squirrel that was seized from its owner's home Wednesday, has been euthanized by New York state officials. The statement said one of the officials involved in the investigation into Peanut and Fred was bitten by the squirrel. Longo brought Peanut him home, ultimately caring for the squirrel for eight months before trying to release it back into the wild. Since then, Peanut has won over the internet's hearts, amassing 537,000 followers on his Instagram page run by Longo. To the group of people who called DEC, there’s a special place in hell for you," Longo wrote on Peanut's Instagram Wednesday.

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — The longtime music director at a northern Michigan church said he was fired just a few months before retirement after officials learned that he was in a same-sex marriage, a dismissal that has angered members and led to sidewalk protests by the choir. “He’s extremely talented, he’s perfect on the piano, he has perfect pitch and because of him, I look forward to going to church every week,” said Bob Holden, a chorister at St. Francis Church in Traverse City. The Catholic Church teaches that marriage is a lifelong union between a man and a woman. “We take employee privacy very seriously and are not able to disclose details about individual personnel matters,” the Diocese of Gaylord, which oversees St. Francis, said in a written statement. In a time where there is so much controversy in the world, the church needs to be a place of peace, and instead it’s turmoil after turmoil,” church member Toni Stanfield said.

Never before had a team rallied to win the World Series after losing the first three games. These Yankees made history, but not the way they wanted – they are the only team to blow a five-run lead while facing elimination from the World Series. Then came something that’s always trouble: a little roller along first by a guy named Mookie in a World Series game in New York. AdvertisementIt was only the seventh game in World Series history in which a team lost after leading by five or more runs. And that no team in 54 years had won even once after losing the first three games of a World Series.

The U.S. presidential election is less than one week away, and investor positioning has gotten very bullish. "Animal spirits have been unleashed, as investors haven't wasted time positioning themselves up for a typical post-election/year-end rally," Cau said in a note. He also pointed out that these inflows come as expectations of former President Donald Trump winning next week have increased. Indeed, shares of Trump Media — which have been a market proxy for Trump's 2024 election chances — have soared a whopping 220.5% in the past month alone. "After Q3, we lack confidence that Boeing shares can outperform the market in the next 12 months."

Overall S & P 500 profit growth is tracking below what analysts anticipated heading into the reporting period. Still, the S & P 500 is less than 1% below a record high reached earlier this month. Solita Marcelli, UBS Global Wealth Management chief investment officer for the Americas, also warned that high valuations could be a problem for megacap tech stocks as earnings roll out. Technical patterns based on price charts aren't too favorable, either, heading into megacap tech earnings. The Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) in June hit its highest level relative to the S & P 500 since March 2000 , when the dot-com bubble peaked.

One person was detained Sunday after three people died in a house fire in Temple City. Firefighters with the Los Angeles County Fire Department were sent to the home in the 6000 block of Sultana Avenue at around 4:50 p.m. and were able to knock down the fire in 30 minutes. But due to a “heavy heat” from the flames, three people died, the department said. “Unfortunately they arrived to heavy smoke and fire showing from the front of the building,” Fred Fielding with the LA County Fire Department said. “I saw the whole house inside was full on fire -- fire coming out of the windows,” said Jane Guzman De Leon, who called 911.

ATLANTA — The election could be decided in Georgia’s fastest-growing and most ethnically diverse county. Vice President Kamala Harris’ economic pitch has heavily emphasized small-business owners, and those in Gwinnett County — one of the “Decider” counties NBC News is tracking — acknowledge they could use more support. So far, many like what Harris is offering, though some remain undecided just over a week before Election Day. The county is exceptionally diverse, with no single ethnic group comprising more than a third of residents, according to 2020 census data. She also kicked off an “Economic Opportunity Tour” in Atlanta this summer, highlighting the administration’s economic accomplishments for Black communities.
