Advertisements for the films "Oppenheimer" and "Barbie" appear at AMC Theaters at The Grove on Thursday, July 20, 2023, in Los Angeles. Chris Pizzello/APThis summer, scorching heat waves are helping take the movie box office to new levels. Movie-theater air conditioning is generally silent, powerful and adapts quickly to temperature swings. Within 5 years of the introduction of air conditioning in movie theaters in the 1920s, Basile said, 3,000 movie theaters were forced to put it in just to keep up with the industry. “Before air conditioning existed in movie theaters, summer was considered the dead season.” Not anymore.

For companies, the stakes are high this Pride

New York CNN —Companies have long embraced Pride Month in June as an uncomplicated way to market to members of the LGBTQ+ community while telegraphing progressive values. Gavin Newsom called out Target’s CEO for “selling out the LGBTQ+ community to extremists.”The current landscape “is alarming,” Todd said. “That middle ground is going away.”So this year, companies that want to participate in Pride have to be prepared to take a real stance. Some of those lashing out have described a campaign against Pride itself, rather than Bud Light or Target (TGT) specifically. It won’t be worth whatever they think they’ll gain.”It’s no coincidence that the anti-trans assault comes as trans rights are under legal attack across the nation.

CNN and the GVA define a mass shooting as a shooting that injures or kills four or more people, not including the shooter. They argue that more firearms and higher gun ownership increases public safety – a stance that continues to be at odds with gun violence experts and data. The area around the Robb Elementary School signs has become a memorial dedicated to the victims of the May 24 mass shooting. Mass shootings are just a piece of that, and the strategies that we’re laying out will impact mass shootings. They’ll also impact a lot of other types of gun violence and that’s absolutely critical to saving lives,” Horwitz said.
Amgen said it was disappointed by the FTC’s decision but doesn’t believe a merger presents any competitive issues. Photo: Eric Thayer/Bloomberg NewsThe Federal Trade Commission said Tuesday it is seeking to block Amgen ’s $27.8 billion acquisition of Horizon Therapeutics , in a new effort by antitrust enforcers to prevent a merger of pharmaceutical companies. The FTC filed a lawsuit in federal court seeking an injunction that would prevent the deal from closing. A federal judge would need to approve the injunction. That is part of a two-step legal process the agency typically uses to prevent mergers it believes are illegal.

(Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images) Chip Somodevilla | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesIt's been a tough couple of years for the U.S. wind energy industry. Although 2023 is expected to remain sluggish, GE Renewable Energy, Siemens Energy and Vestas Wind Systems, the leading makers of wind turbines — outside of China, which has built the world's largest wind energy infrastructure — and their suppliers are banking on growth over the next decade, particularly in the nascent offshore wind niche. "The wind energy market is stuck in this very strange paradox right now," said Aaron Barr, an industry analyst at Wood Mackenzie. Comparatively, the U.S. offshore wind industry is just ramping up after years of delays in permitting, environmental approvals and power purchasing agreements with utilities that buy wind energy.

REUTERS/Eric ThayerMarch 2 (Reuters) - The Biden administration on Thursday added 37 companies to a trade blacklist, including units of Chinese genetics company BGI (300676.SZ) and Chinese cloud computing firm Inspur, in a move that promises to further ratchet up tensions with Beijing. The Commerce Department, which oversees export controls, added BGI Research and BGI Tech Solutions (Hongkong), over allegations that the units pose a "significant risk" to contributing to Chinese government surveillance. The Commerce Department accused Inspur of acquiring and attempting to acquire U.S. goods to support China's military modernization efforts. Commerce added 26 other Chinese entities to the list - which makes it hard for targeted companies to receive shipments of U.S. goods from suppliers. In 2020, the Commerce Department added two units of BGI Group, the world’s largest genomics company, to its economic blacklist over allegations it conducted genetic analyses used to further the repression of China’s minority Uyghurs.

Circuit Court of Appeals ruling sets up the potential for the Supreme Court to rule on the law, which conservatives and right-wing commentators have said is necessary to combat “Big Tech” from suppressing their views. The Texas law was passed by the state’s Republican-led legislature and signed by its Republican governor. The social media companies have sought to preserve rights to regulate user content when they believe it may lead to violence. Greg Abbott said, “There is a dangerous movement by some social media companies to silence conservative ideas and values. Because the 5th Circuit ruling conflicts with part of a ruling by the 11th Circuit, the aggrieved parties have a stronger case for petitioning the Supreme Court to hear the matter.
