New York CNN —Additional charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams are “possible” and it’s “likely” there will be additional defendants charged as part of the alleged scheme in the federal corruption case, a prosecutor said Wednesday at a court hearing. Federal prosecutor Hagan Scotten said they have evidence that Adams attempted to tamper with a witness in the investigation. The federal prosecutor revealed new information about the investigation, saying it began in the summer of 2021 before Adams became mayor. The additional defendants could be charged in a superseding indictment or in a separate case, Scotten added. Lawyers for New York Mayor Eric Adams asked a federal judge on Monday to dismiss the bribery charge included in his federal indictment, saying the government’s allegations are “extraordinarily vague” and failed to prove Adams broke the law. Adams was charged last week with five criminal counts, including bribery, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and solicitation of a contribution by a foreign national. He is the first sitting mayor of New York City to face criminal charges in the modern era. “The zealous prosecutors who secured the indictment would have alleged that kind of specific agreement if they had any evidence to support it,” Spiro added. Damian Williams, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, declined to comment on the defense’s motion to dismiss the bribery charge.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been hit with five federal charges – including wire fraud, bribery and solicitation of a contribution by a foreign national – according to a sprawling 57-page federal indictment unsealed Thursday. Although the Bentley Suite for two nights would have cost approximately $7,000, Adams paid less than $600, the indictment says. And so, the building opened as requested by a Turkish official who had plied Adams with travel benefits and other gifts, the indictment says. In addition to the free travel and hotel rooms, Adams received illegal campaign contributions from foreign donors, including the Turkish government official, the indictment says. Adams has repeatedly said that his administration is cooperating in the investigations and he's focused on his work as mayor.

Before news of federal charges broke Wednesday, Adams was at a reception at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which President Joe Biden also attended. “I do not see how Mayor Adams can continue governing New York City,” Ocasio-Cortez said on X. "However, it is clear that defending himself against serious federal charges will require a significant amount of the time and attention needed to govern this great city. The most appropriate path forward is for him to step down so that New York City can get the full focus its leadership demands."
