CNN —More than 1.5 million years ago, two different species of ancient human crossed paths on a lakeshore, perhaps locking eyes with each other. The researchers found 12 hominin tracks in a line, suggesting they were made by the same individual. “There’s one long trackway with 12 (hominin) footprints in it. We hypothesize that those more humanlike footprints are more likely Homo erectus just because the rest of their anatomy is so human,” Hatala said. Shown here is a fossil footprint hypothesized to have been created by Homo erectus, a species of ancient human.

News that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's plans to hike tariffs on imports from China, Canada and Mexico sent ripples across global markets Tuesday. Faced with a bruising price war in the fast growing but crowded domestic market for electric vehicles, Chinese automobile manufacturers are pressuring suppliers to deliver hefty cost cuts. China’s BYD, the world’s largest manufacturer of electric vehicles, asked a supplier to reduce its product prices by 10 percent starting next year, according to a company email that was apparently leaked and circulated widely on the internet in China. He Zhiqi, BYD’s executive vice president, said that the competition for so-called new energy vehicles — China’s preferred phrase for fully electric and gas-electric hybrid vehicles — was entering a “decisive battle” or “knockout match,” according to the email with the subject line “BYD Passenger Vehicle Cost Reduction Requirements in 2025.”“In order to enhance the competitiveness of BYD passenger cars, we need the entire supply chain to work together and continue to reduce costs,” Mr.

To better understand the extinct giants, Qvarnström and his colleagues investigated overlooked fossils known as bromalites: remnants from the digestive system — aka dinosaur poop and vomit. The analysis, which took 10 years to complete, allowed the team to piece together why dinosaurs came to prominence. Information from fossilized poop helped researchers to understand how dinosaurs rose to prominence 200 million years ago. Grzegorz NiedzwiedzkiReconstructing dinosaurs’ riseThe authors came up with five phases to explain dinosaurs’ ascendancy: Their ancestors were omnivorous, eating plants and animals. The supremacy of the dinosaurs endured until an asteroid that struck off the coast of what’s now Mexico 66 million years ago doomed the dinosaurs to extinction.

Several current federal employees told CNN they’re afraid their lives will be forever changed – including physically threatened – as Musk makes behind-the-scenes bureaucrats into personal targets. “These tactics are aimed at sowing terror and fear at federal employees,” said Everett Kelley, president of the American Federation of Government Employees, which represents more than 800,000 of the 2.3 million civilian federal employees. CNN reached out to all four federal employees who either declined comment or were unable to be reached. Cummings said she already knows of federal employees who “have dedicated their lives to civil service,” already quitting their jobs in anticipation of what’s to come. Ramaswamy did not directly respond to questions about singling out individual federal employees but told CNN: “Most federal employees, like most human beings, are fundamentally good people and deserve to be treated with respect, but the real problem is the bureaucracy.”“Our opponent is not any particular individual.

London CNN —Volkswagen has sold its plant in Xinjiang — a Chinese region beset by accusations of human rights abuses — citing “economic reasons.”“There is no business case for (the plant),” said a spokesperson, noting that it produced combustion engine vehicles until 2019 and, since then, has effectively operated as a distribution center for models produced in other factories. The Volkswagen spokesperson told CNN that SAIC-Volkswagen sold the plant, located in Xinjiang’s capital Urumqi, to SMVIC, a subsidiary of Shanghai Lingang Economic Development Group, but declined to disclose the value of the sale. The sale comes after governments and human rights groups have, for years, accused China of using forced labor and committing other abuses, such as mass detentions, in Xinjiang against the Uyghur Muslim minority group. Volkswagen has faced criticism from rights activists for owning a plant in the region, but it has said there are no signs that forced labor has taken place in the facility. When asked to comment on the FT article, a spokesperson for Volkswagen told CNN that “Volkswagen always adheres to the legal requirements in its communications.

If you're like most people, you likely know that you need to make a few key moves to get your finances on track. That's because humans have evolved to generally avoid risk and prefer things the way they are, a phenomenon known as status quo bias, says Brad Klontz, a certified financial planner, financial psychologist and author of "Start Thinking Rich." "In general, it requires thinking, it requires energy and activity. To counteract these forces, you'll have to put systems in place that can excite and motivate you enough to counteract financial inertia, Klontz says. It's hard, but "it really is the key to becoming rich."

It's using decoy drones to outwit Ukrainian defenses, according to the ISW. Around half the drones used to attack Ukraine are decoy drones, a report said. Russia is stepping up its use of decoy drones to distract Ukrainian air defenses in mass aerial attacks, according to The Institute for the Study of War (ISW). This, said the ISW's analysts, suggests that "Russian forces likely used a large number of decoy drones to overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses." The Associated Press in November found that Russia was using swarms of fake drones to surround deadly thermobaric drones, which are highly destructive.

To the Editor:Re “Trump Seen as a Threat to E.V. Sales” (Business, Nov. 26):It is ironic that President-elect Donald Trump, who claims he will make America great again, wants to kill offshore wind and electric cars. President Biden tried hard to get American industry back into the green transition by promoting domestically built green energy and electric cars. Mr. Trump apparently wants to turn it all over to China. The green transition will happen regardless of what Mr. Trump thinks.

Higher fuel prices could be in the cards if President-elect Donald Trump follows through with his tariff threats on Canada, according to industry experts, who are skeptical on whether the new levies will ever be implemented. Trump on Monday pledged to implement additional tariffs on China, Canada and Mexico on day one of his presidency, according to his posts on social media platform Truth Social. He said he would sign an executive order on Jan. 20 imposing a 25% tariff on all imports from Canada and Mexico, a move that may breach the terms of a regional free trade agreement. Goldman Sachs' Co-Head of Global Commodities Research Daan Struyven said that if a 25% levy hit Canadian crude exports to the U.S. "that could, in theory, lead to some pretty significant consequences for three groups." U.S. refiners who rely on Canadian oil barrels could face lower profit margins, and consumers may potentially face higher prices, surmised Struyven.

Jackson, 37, is a wind turbine service technician at Vestas, a wind turbine manufacturer, in Bee County, Texas, and earns $73,000 per year. Wind turbine technicians face one of the highest rates of work-related injuries, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Despite the high demand for wind turbine service technicians, the profession remains "underrated and overlooked," she adds, offering untapped potential for job-seekers who crave adventure and a competitive salary. While you don't need a bachelor's degree to become a wind turbine service technician, some jobs might require you to complete a 2-year technical program or apprenticeship.
