Open seating helped Southwest load and unload passengers, which Southwest CEO Bob Jordan said meant more on-time departures and cost savings on Thursday’s earnings call. Even as other airlines switched to assigned seats in recent decades, Southwest kept its boarding process the same. ‘Sad day’Some loyal Southwest customers vented their frustration about the policy change on social media. She worries she will have to pay extra for her traditional A-group seats as Southwest moves to assigned seats. But activist pressure did not factor into the company’s move to assigned seats, Southwest CEO Jordan said on the earnings call.

Elliot has observed hedge funds expressing bullishness on the dollar in two main ways. Hedge funds are also taking long positions in exchange-traded funds specific to sectors likely to benefit from a loosening of regulatory constraints. In response, Elliot says hedge funds are moving into short positions on long-duration bonds, which is five years or more. Finally, given the rising uncertainty around inflation and deficit spending, hedge funds have shifted to increasing their positions in gold by buying gold futures contracts, he said. These contracts set up agreements on the purchase of a predetermined amount of gold at a set price by a set date.

Less obvious, however, is Usha Vance's political orientation and relationship to the newfound national spotlight. Elliot Grihault and Emma D'Arcy as Lucerys and Rhaenyra in "House of the Dragon." Ollie Upton/HBOLucerys and his dragon Arrax's deaths are truly the biggest tragedies of "House of the Dragon." Not only did Lucerys' death essentially kick-start a terrible civil war, but it was entirely accidental. There is a short moment where Lucerys thinks he has escaped, and then Vhagar leaps out of nowhere and rips the dragon and its rider apart. Lucerys may have lost his life, but Aemond now has to live with the weight that an accident caused the death of a relative and a civil war.

Earlier this week, AI company ElevenLabs said it is bringing digitally produced celebrity voice-overs of deceased actors, including Garland, James Dean and Burt Reynolds, to its newly launched Reader app. “We deeply respect their legacy and are honored to have their voices as part of our platform,” said Dustin Blank, head of partnerships at ElevenLabs. The AI is trained on old recordings and those recordings are under copyright. It’s not unlike a company negotiating a copyright deal to use a popular song by Queen in an ad. It’s unclear, however, how AI versions of well-known voices will be received by mass audiences and if it will raise concerns around authenticity.

This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Elliott said Southwest leadership had a "rigid commitment" to the model it dreamed up decades ago, blaming that for today's shortcomings. Elliott Management, which oversees $66 billion in assets, is one of the world's most feared activist hedge funds. "The significant investment we have made reflects our conviction that, with the right leadership, Southwest can regain its status as an industry-leading airline."

CNN —Billie Eilish’s new song, “Lunch” is the definitive queer anthem of 2024. Eilish’s “Lunch” symbolizes the seismic evolution in queer women expression in music. Eilish’s “Lunch” is a brilliant reinvention of our freedom of queer expression, and it comes at a most desperate time. If only we tune into Eilish’s song and to its inherent humanity — carnal, raw, authentic — and recognize in it our own hidden desires that we should face with the same openness she does. What Eilish has achieved, though, with her latest album and particularly with the song, “Lunch,” is to raise the bar on the unabashed expression of queer and women’s sexual desire.

Beethoven’s hair reveals lead poisoning

CNN —Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” is one of the first songs I learned to play on the violin. While his doctor’s notes were lost to time, scientists sequenced Beethoven’s genome from locks of his hair last year. Hulton Archive/Getty ImagesA new analysis of Beethoven’s hair has shown the composer experienced lead poisoning toward the end of his life. Tests revealed incredibly elevated levels of lead, as well as arsenic and mercury, in two of his locks, likely from drinking wine that was sweetened with lead. Researchers don’t believe lead poisoning would have been enough to kill him, but it could have contributed to the composer’s well-known gastrointestinal issues and deafness.
